Operation Liberty Call

The Active Duty Department hosted the 2009 Operation Liberty Call on October 2nd. This year’s military appreciation night took place during Fleet Week at Dick’s Last Resort in downtown San Diego.

Coed for a Day

On October 7th, military service members toured the beautiful University of San Diego campus and took part in a mock trial at USD Law School. This was an opportunity for service members and spouses to learn about the college application process, the new GI bill, as well as military scholarship programs, all while experiencing a day on campus at USD.

SuperFamily Drawing Contest Soon we will find ourselves in the midst of another exciting holiday season. The ASYMCA has just chosen the winners of our recent SuperFamily Drawing Contest. These winning images will be used for our flyers for our holiday program: The SuperParent Holiday Shopping Day!

The Junior Seau Foundation invited injured service members of Naval Medical Center to be guests at their annual Chargers Teammates Luncheon. They were able to meet Junior Seau and enjoy a wonderful meal. The Junior Seau Foundation invites our ill and injured service members to several events throughout the year, and we appreciate their continued support!

Final thoughts... From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens: There are days when my daily commute seems longer than other days, but I will never feel like it is long again when I think of Tyson and Harry pedaling from Florida to San Diego. Wow! While they are celebrating their new beginnings, after completing their Navy enlistments, they are also promoting the San Diego Armed Services YMCA and raising funds for our programs. Terrific! We can never stop promoting the ASYMCA as we live in a mobile society where those who know what we do rotate and their replacements are unaware. I ask every organization I contact to do one thing for me: “please tell everyone you know, especially military personnel and their families about our programs.” I ask everyone reading this to please do the same. As you see in this SNAPSHOT many military children and families enjoyed a weekend together enjoying the outside at camp. Besides the fun of hiking, surfing, climbing and other events, these families were able to gain new friends by meeting and spending time with other families. The parents were also afforded quality time bonding with their children. These are memories that last a life time. It is so important for families, especially those families experiencing deployment separations, to bond with other families . Families who bond with others who share the common ground of deployment separations have formed a special support network that respond in times where assistance is needed. We are very pleased that we can facilitate these opportunities for bonding. Please remember, if you know of a military family needing assistance tell them about the assistance we can provide and have them contact us. We stand ready to assist.. Speaking of assistance, check out our “NEIGHBORHOOD EXCHANGE” program on Thursday, 19 November at our Murphy Canyon Facility starting at 10:00. To express our appreciation to military families, we offer free perishable and non-perishable food (thanks to our partnership with the San Diego Food Bank), books, clothing and an opportunity to receive information from other service agencies… and your children can participate in programs at the same time. Join the fun! Keep Chargin! Paul
