San Diego Armed Services YMCA

July 2009

Volume 4, Issue 7

Serving over 6,000 activeduty junior-enlisted military service members and their families each month with free programs!

4th of July at the Armed Services YMCA ASYMCA volunteers won 2nd place in the 4th of July Coronado Parade for the red and blue decorated coffee wagon float! During the Civil War, coffee wagons, much like this one, were used by volunteers to provide support to troops.

The San Diego Armed Services YMCA was everywhere this past 4th of July! Military and civilian volunteers could be seen in the Coronado Parade; Paul Steffens waved to crowds at the Rancho Bernardo Parade; Peter Opsal, Board Chair, expertly promoted ASYMCA services while interviewed by Fox 5 during the Big Bay Boom fireworks; and the Naval Medical Center celebrated with hundreds of cookies, cards, and crafts.

Welcome 4th of July and Christmas pictures all in the same Snapshot! — please enjoy

In this issue This year’s Big Bay Boom Fireworks lit up the San Diego Bay on the 4th of July. This event was also a fundraiser for the San Diego ASYMCA. Thank you Port of San Diego for your generous support!

Military and their dependants seeking active treatment at Naval Medical Center celebrated the 4th of July with cookies, American Flags, activities and patriotic blankets. Volunteers from the San Diego Armed Services YMCA flooded eleven patient wards as well as the med hold barracks located at Naval Medical Center. Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of San Diego and the Harbor Presbyterian Church, patients celebrated the 4th with colorful cookies decked out just for this special holiday.

Active Duty Programs

In June, Active Duty Programs toured San Diego with military and spouses newly relocated to the San Diego area.

Craft & Conversation Cooking Class

Avant Garde volunteers led this Craft & Conversation Cooking class lesson on easy and inexpensive Fourth of July barbeque ideas. After, the group enjoyed the lunch together during an outdoor picnic.

Final thoughts... From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens: What a 4th of July! Parades, picnics and fireworks that bring people together to celebrate the birth of this wonderful country. Thanks to Avant Garde we had our first opportunity to introduce the ASYMCA Coffee Wagon to the community in the Coronado Parade. The coffee wagon is an exact replica of the coffee wagon used by the YMCA in the Civil War to help the soldiers in the battle fields. It is the symbol of the Armed Services YMCA. It is noteworthy that, on its introduction, it was awarded Second Place in the parade float competition. Well done to Avant Garde! While my appearance in the Rancho Bernardo 4th of July Parade, was not as interesting as a coffee wagon to those who enjoyed the parade, I was very pleased by the number of people who shouted out “thank you for what you do” showing that the mission of the Armed Services YMCA is recognized in the Rancho Bernardo Community. It is this recognition that helps us in our efforts to ensure that every military family is aware of and takes advantage of our free programs. Speaking of free programs, the pictures of those enjoying our Third Annual “The Christmas You Missed” clearly show the value of this heartwarming program. It truly does snow in San Diego on the 25th of June every year for military families separated by deployment on the previous Christmas. I want to give a special thank you to Sandy Purdon, a member of the ASYMCASD Board of Management for his hard and successful work on the Big Bay Boom Fireworks Show. Sandy produces the show and, in spite of the current economic conditions, he was able to raise the funding to put on a fantastic event that helps showcase America’s Finest City and the mission of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA. Standby for next year’s 10th Anniversary of the Big Bay Boom Fireworks show. In closing, I want to thank all the many individuals, companies, foundations and organizations who want to assist military families and do so through volunteering in ASYMCASD programs and/or make a donation to the ASYMCASD. We are able to do what we do because of this support. In these difficult economic times, it is encouraging that the San Diego Community continues to step to the plate and recognize the members of our military and their families. I thank you for your continued support. Keep Chargin! For more information on how YOU can make a difference… [email protected] 858.751.5755 www.militaryymca.org
