Thank you to The Bookman Since May, the ASYMCA, through the Neighborhood Exchange program, has supplied more than 800 bags of food to over 2040 people. The ASYMCA Murphy Canyon headquarters, now an official monthly emergency food distribution site for the San Diego Food Bank, has assisted qualified families in zip codes 92123 and 92124 by supplying food to help families reduce food costs and budget their funds for other expenses. This event is an agency wide effort that has included craft activities for children, a Mom & Tots program, massages for parents, and much more. This program would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers and community partners. We’d like to extend a special thank you to Irwin Herman “The Bookman” for his commitment to providing us with books each month that are available free to families during the food distribution. His commitment, in partnership with the Nice Guys, to our military families is truly extraordinary and greatly appreciated. Over the past year, with The Bookman’s help, the Family Outreach team has been stepping up efforts to encourage families to read together. To learn more about The Bookman’s non-profit service, please visit www.thebookman.org .

The 4th Neighborhood Exchange will be held on Thursday, August 27th from 10am to noon at the ASY headquarters in Murphy Canyon. For more information, please call 858-751-5755 x 107.

New Wheels for Active Duty The Active Duty Program Department would like to thank Ms. Rosalinda Renskoski of Westcliffe, CO for donating this beautiful truck. It has been put to use already welcoming home hundreds of Sailors from long deployments!

Naval Medical Center

August brought a visit from the young ladies of the Miss Poway Scholarship Pageant Court 2009 contestants and winners. They enjoyed serving a homemade meal to the service members recovering at Naval Medical Center.

Armed Services YMCA was proud to assist and sponsor NMC’s Occupational Therapy outing, focusing on community reintegration. The group of 15 injured and ill service members was dropped at the Coronado ferry landing, where they purchased a ticket for a short ride across the harbor to downtown San Diego. Then the group walked downtown, stopping at the USS San Diego to answer questions. Next they boarded the trolley to a restaurant which had pool tables and a bowling alley. After lunch and games they returned to the hospital via trolley and bus. The day presented multiple challenges for the rehab patients such as: utilizing public transportation, ambulation, problem solving and money management. Staff and patients agree the community reintegration outing was a very valuable learning experience.

Final thoughts... From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens: The pictures in this issue tell the story more than words— the San Diego Armed Services YMCA is having a very active summer. Our “YES” program not only provides fun-filled days for many children, but it also provides some much needed “whew” time for military moms and dads. I think the smiles on the young faces prove the value of this program. This summer is also a very busy “rotation” period as many local Admirals and Generals and their families move on and their reliefs settle-in. We will miss those moving on to new challenges (RADM Len Hering, VADM Sam Locklear, LGEN Terry Robling, RADM Chris Hunter, and BGEN Angela Salinas) and we wish them continued success and thank them for their outstanding support of military families. We welcome their reliefs (VADM Richard Hunt, RADM Christine Bruzek-Kohler…, MGEN Tom Conant, RADM Bill French and MGEN Ron Bailey. We wish them success in their commands and look forward to working with them to continue providing quality programs for military families. We also want to express our sincere appreciation to Cathe Robling, Pam Locklear, and Bob Hunter for their outstanding support as members of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA Board of Management. Together we all made and will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of military families. I want to also express our appreciation to the San Diego Community, including individual donors, corporations, foundations, service clubs and all who continue their donations to the ASYMCA. In spite of the recession, we are able, thanks to these donations to continue providing quality programs that add to the quality of life of junior military personnel and their families. The importance of these programs is evidenced by continued growth in our average monthly program participation from 2,263 in 2004 to 6,226 in 2008 and to 6,438 through July in 2009. Our open family counseling cases exceed 110. Without the generosity of the San Diego community we would find it very difficult to meet this demand. We also must not forget the support of the military commands and the other service providers MCAS MIRAMAR spouses’ visit to ASYMCA with whom we partner. - Keep Chargin Bev Conant, Dee Richie, and Cathe Robling For more information on how YOU can make a difference… [email protected] 858.751.5755 www.militaryymca.org
