Casey Mears Still Hopes to Fulfill Potential Nothing ever seems to work out for Casey Mears, who has thus far been unable to fulfill his potential and the legacy of his famous family. Mears’ uncle, Rick Mears, won the Indianapolis 500 four times. His father, Roger, raced at Indy and was an off-road racer of great renown. Casey, after racing in CART, made a switch to stock cars and won an ARCA race in 2003 at Michigan. Since making the move to NASCAR, Mears has competed for three teams: Ganassi (now Earnhardt Ganassi) 2003-06, Hendrick Motorsports 2007-08 and Richard Childress Racing beginning this year. His career-

best points finish was 14th with Ganassi in 2006. A 15th-place finish in the Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Speedway left Mears ranked 19th in the Sprint Cup standings. He is 69 points behind Jeff Burton and 72 ahead of rookie Joey Logano. “It was a good day for the Jack Daniel’s (his sponsor) team, but I think we were better than where we ended up,” said Mears after the Kansas race. “At times, our Chevrolet showed speeds comparable to guys in the top five and top 10, and I felt that’s where we should’ve finished. “We were a little too tight and lost some spots there at end, but our program definitely shows signs of improvement. We’ll try to build on this 15th-place finish next weekend.” Mears’ lone Cup victory to date occurred in one of NASCAR’s signature races, the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, where he crossed the finish line first on May 27, 2007. He also finished second in the 2006 Daytona 500 and won the pole at Indianapolis in 2004. “My most memorable experience ... is kind of a toss-up
Track History: Race car promoter/car dealer Bruton Smith and driver Curtis Turner formed a partnership to build a 1.5 mile oval north of Charlotte in 1959. On June 19, 1960, the first World 600 was run at the new facility. A year later, like many superspeedways of the era, the track fell into Chapter 11 reorganization from which it eventually emerged despite lagging ticket sales. Smith left in 1962 to pursue other business interests but returned in 1975 as a majority

It’s not uncommon for dancers to break in their toe shoes by crushing them in doors, steaming them over a kettle, slamming them against a concrete floor or beating them with a hammer. • Those who study such things claim that eventually the oceans will dry up -- in about a billion years or so. • During the Middle Ages, French toast was a delicacy enjoyed only by the very wealthy.

between sitting on the pole at Indy and winning at Charlotte,” said Mears. “I think Charlotte is probably the biggest memory that I have right now in racing. That’s my fondest memory. At the same time, it was very exciting to sit on the pole at Indy just because of my family’s background there and history. To do that was a lot of fun. It just felt like the right place, right time. So between those two are probably my two fondest memories in racing at the moment.”
stockholder and regained control of the day-to-day operations, hiring Humpy Wheeler as general manager. Lowe’s Motor Speedway has the distinction of being the first sports facility in America to offer year-round condominiums overlooking the speedway in 1984. Eight years later, Smith and Wheeler added a $1.7 million permanent reflective lighting system, making Lowe’s the first modern superspeedway to host night racing. The revolutionary lighting progress uses mirrors to
simulate daylight without glare, shadows or obtrusive light poles. Motion pictures such as “Days of Thunder”, “Speedway” and “Stroker Ace” and even music videos like Tracy Lawrence’s “If The Good Die Young” have been filmed at the Speedway. Lowe’s Motor Speedway also annually presents two of the nation’s largest car shows and swap meets; the Food Lion AutoFairs in April and September. With track rentals and track events, the speedway is used more than 300 days per year.

BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “Barbie All Dolled Up: Celebrating 50 Years of Barbie” By Jennie D’Amato-Reviewed by Katy Olson Escorting readers down Barbie’s pink-brick memory lane -- from her glamorous stints as a surgeon and Oscar-winner, rock-and-roller and superhero, to her dashing boyfriend Ken’s debut in 1961 (he donned a red bathing suit and sandals, and carried a matching towel!) -- Jennie D’Amato’s “Barbie All Dolled Up: Celebrating 50 Years of Barbie” chronicles Barbie and her iconic influence on pop culture, fashion and the imagination of little girls worldwide. Perfect for Barbie fans and collectors, this friendly and beautifully designed compendium charts the evolution of the world’s favorite doll and legendary star, from creator Ruth Handler’s initial inspiration (she saw her young daughter Barbara’s frustration with flat paper dolls) to this year’s 50th anniversary celebration of Barbie’s debut at the 1959 New York Toy Fair. With re-creations of the 1964 Barbie Fan Club introduction letter and membership card, and a Barbie fashion magazine, the book brings back memories for girls now grown, and enlightens the doll’s current crop of fans of her long, colorful history as a pop icon and, for many, best girlfriend. Fans will remember the outfits and accessories that covered their childhood bedroom floors: the Goin’ Camping Camper that Malibu Barbie drove down to the beach, the Mountain Ski Cabin from the early 1970s, and the Bob Mackie, Armani and Oscar de la Renta-designed gowns that debuted in the 1990s. Bright Technicolor photos of the fabulous shoes, voluminous ball gowns and licensed products from comic books to knitting kits bring Barbie and her legacy to life. As longtime Barbie fashion designer Carol Spencer notes, “Barbie will always follow Ruth’s original plan: a doll that a child would understand, reach for and aspire to. By aspiring, a girl learns where a woman can go: She can reach for whatever is out there.” (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc. COUPON Expires 10/31/09

VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves WAYS TO HELP VETERANS If you’re in a veterans service organization or are someone who wants to help veterans, this is a good time to start planning your efforts for this winter and next year. Stand Downs (www.va.gov and put Stand Down in the search box), the Moving Wall (www.themovingwall.org) and donating to groups that let veterans go on adventures free of cost are all good places to direct your energies. Contact the volunteer group at the closest Department of Veterans Affairs medical center, and block out one day a month to go and assist. Get its annual calendar and sign up to help at some of the bigger events, such as root beer float parties, barbecues and field trips. Host a Christmas party for a whole unit at the closest VA medical center, complete with presents (maybe a big television for the day room) and pizza (with staff permission) and drinks. Call the volunteer department in advance to see what is needed. If you’re near a shelter where a large number of homeless veterans are helped, think about serving daily meals, handing out clothing and pulling shifts at the facility. Sign up to drive veterans to distant medical centers for their care. This door-to-door chauffeuring (and then back home again) can be invaluable to veterans who are unable to drive. If you’re an attorney who does pro bono work to help veterans with their claims, commit to helping an additional veteran each month. If you’re in college, see about tutoring a veteran who’s just now going back to school. If you want to make a cash donation to an organization, be sure to check www.charitywatch.org to verify that your dollars will go to veterans, not to a money machine that spends most of the donations on itself and “admin” costs. Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to
[email protected]. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Oct. 26, 1825, the 425-mile Erie Canal opens, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River. The work was largely done by Irish diggers, who had to rely on primitive tools. They were paid $10 a month, and barrels of whiskey were placed along the canal route as encouragement. • On Oct. 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France, is dedicated in New York Harbor by President Grover Cleveland. On the pedestal was inscribed “The New Colossus,” a sonnet by American poet Emma Lazarus that begins “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” • On Oct. 31, 1912, “The Musketeers of Pig Alley,” directed by D.W. Griffith, debuts. The movie, which followed the career of a gangster nicknamed the Snapper Kid, initiated a long Hollywood tradition of “gangster movies.” (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “Louis D. Brandeis: A Life” by Melvin I. Urofsky-Reviewed by Larry Cox In his 23 years on the U.S. Supreme Court, Louis D. Brandeis helped to formulate many of our ideas regarding free speech, right to privacy, pro bono legal work and the necessity of federal regulation in economic affairs. Although he has been dead for almost seven decades, many of his court decisions continue to reverberate throughout almost every level of our society. Brandeis was born and raised in Louisville, Ky. In 1875, when he was 19, he entered Harvard, where his brilliant mind and fierce debating skills led him to become a lawyer. He set up practice in Boston and built a solid reputation as an arbitrator in labor disputes. He was an unusual attorney in that if he discovered a client was in the wrong, he refused to represent him. In 1912, he helped formulate the doctrine of New Freedom championed by Woodrow Wilson. Four years later, he was nominated by Wilson for the U.S. Supreme Court. His confirmation fight was ugly and took more than six months before he was confirmed. Justice William O. Douglas would later write that many saw the Brandeis nomination a threat because of the simple fact that he was incorruptible. He also was the first Jew to be seated on the high court. In a fascinating new biography, Melvin I. Urofsky, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, draws on family papers, letters and Supreme Court documents never before available to trace the life of this incredible man. Justice Brandeis -- reformer, lawyer and jurist -- is both humanized and made accessible. His action in drafting the Federal Reserve Act, the Clayton Anti-Trust Act and the law establishing the Federal Trade Commission helped stabilize the United States following the stock market crash of 1929. It is ironic that another Brandeis measure, the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, which mandated federal regulation for banking, was repealed in 1999 under the recommendation of Alan Greenspan and, unfortunately, led to our current economic mess.

Army Pvt. KEVIN DEHAVEN has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT). During basic training, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremonies, military customs and courtesies, map reading, tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, field training, and first aid skills. The recruit developed combat skills and handled various weapons available to the infantry soldier. During AIT, the soldier received instruction to serve as an infantryman/mortarman using light and heavy anti-armor weapons, indirect-fire support, and mechanized operations while assigned to a rifle or mortar squad. The training included weapons qualification, tactics, patrolling, navigation, field communica-tions, and combat operations; engage-ment in infantry combat exercises, battle drills, land mine locating, neutralizing and extracting, and survival operations during a nuclear, biological or chemical attack. DeHaven is the son of Lisa DeHaven of N. Main St., Port Allegany, Pa., and the brother of Jessica DeHaven of Lone Aly, Smethport, Pa. He is a 2003 graduate of Port Allegany High School. f STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was American columnist Franklin Pierce Adams who made the following sage observation: “Seeing ourselves as others see us would probably confirm our worst suspicions about them.” • If you’re like the average human, your heart will beat 100,000 times today. • Before Humphrey Bogart became a famed star of the silver screen, he was famous for another reason. Bogart’s mother painted a portrait of little Humphrey as a baby, and that portrait was used as a trademark for Mellin’s baby-food company.

B-O-O Brownie Pops and Halloween Goldfish Munch
FAMILY FEATURES
T
he bewitching season is here! Gather the goblins, conjure up some creative costumes and prepare scary, scrumptious sweets for a great ghostly gathering. Making these frighteningly fabulous party treats together is a perfect way for mom and the kids to share some spooktacular fun. Cast a spell right from the start with a Happy Haunted House. Begin with a ready-to-decorate Halloween Cookie House Kit available at craft and hobby stores. The house is pre-assembled; just decorate and enjoy! Sweetly smiling Goldfish Grahams do double duty as both roofing “tiles” and a wholesome snack (they re made with whole grains, without artificial preser vatives). Kids can affix the Goldfish crackers to the roof after it s been iced (and enjoy snacking on them as they work), making sure to give equal representation to each flavor: cinnamon, honey and chocolate. The sparkling blue piping gel moat and pond need to be stocked with Goldfish, too. Complete the decorating with green coconut grass, a candy corn fence plus the icings and the candies that come with the kit. B-O-O Pops are easy ... nothing sinister here! Use a brownie mix for convenience and bake in the Brownie Pop Silicone Mold to ensure perfect pops. The kids can insert the lollipop sticks, then dip pops into the colorful Candy Melts. Decorating sprinkles and sugars add the finishing flourish. Halloween Goldfish Munch is a snappy party snack or a tantalizing take-away for ghoulish guests. Kids can mix the Goldfish crackers (graham and pretzel flavors), with nuts and dried fruits while Mom melts the Spooky Green Candy for drizzling. Add favorite beverages and let the spookalicious party begin! For additional information about Goldfish Grahams, recipes and nutrition information, visit www.pepperidgefarm.com. Find more ways to bake, decorate and celebrate, or order the Halloween Cookie House Kit at www.wilton.com.

by Matilda Charles While we might not want to think about it yet, colder weather is coming. Getting ready for winter doesn't have to be a big job if we take it one step at a time. • Groceries: Start adding a few things to your weekly grocery list so you can prepare meals when it's too cold or dangerous to go out. Aim for at least a week of meals on hand. Canned goods (fruits, vegetables, soups, stews) or dry foods (side dishes, drink mixes) store well. Work from a list and keep track of what you're accumulating. Add paper products, light bulbs, flashlight batteries and pet food. • Get Out/Stay Busy: If you attend exercise classes, start asking about rides if the weather isn't good. Collect names and phone numbers of people in the class who live near you. If you meet regularly with friends, make plans for continuing to get together through the winter. Consider starting a new hobby or project for the cold months. If you love to read, stock up on a few books. • Stay Warm: If your living space needs winterization, make calls to arrange for help. Replace caulking around doors and windows, install storm windows (or the special plastic that you shrink with a hair dryer) to reduce drafts. If you live in snow country, make arrangements now to have someone shovel or plow so you're not caught with the first big snow storm and no way to get out. Look for sales on a coat, gloves and non-skid boots, if you need them. Invest in a favorite new sweater or vest to wear around the house. • Stay Healthy: Ask your doctor if you should get a flu shot. If the answer is yes, put a reminder on your calendar. Declutter to make sure paths through the house are safe.

119 West Main St., Smethport, PA “Senior Tip: If you use a walker or cane, it’s good to write your contact information somewhere on it, just in case you lose it. However, why not include only your name and the name and phone number of your emergency contact? That way, if you lose your cane, it is more likely to get returned for having a phone number on it, but a stranger cannot find out where you live just by looking at, say, a return address label on your walker. And in any case, it’s good to have your emergency contact listed in case something happens while you are out.” -- M.A. in Arkansas

ARE YOU CONSIDERING THE PURCHASE OF A HEARING AID? You have the right to know your Hearing Health Care Provider’s Educational and Clinical Experience! Before you spend your hard earned money on hearing aids, please inquire if your hearing aid provider is an Audiologist, Otolaryngologist or Otologist. These individuals are required by law to meet all educational, clinical and fellowship training in the areas of hearing health care. Most have obtained a Doctorate degree in hearing healthcare provision. They have spent numerous years learning about diseases, deafness and dizziness which sometimes can be treated medically and surgically. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK YOUR HEARING HEALTH CARE PROVIDER THEIR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND. Allegany County Joins In National Aging In Place Week Celebration
All across America communities are celebrating National Aging in Place Week to support and enhance opportunities for communities to create aging friendly neighborhoods and communities. The Allegany County Community Partnership on Aging will join efforts by planning a weeklong series of local events. Aging in Place Week kicks off on Monday evening,
SEEK TRUE PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE! This health care informative message has been brought to you by the offices of Dr. Robert L. Campbell, Audiologist. Dr. Campbell has been providing hearing healthcare and hearing aid dispensing services to our local communities for over 28 years! Dr. Campbell is a member of the Allied Medical Staff at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, NY and Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, PA. If you have any questions or concerns about your Hearing Health Care, please call Dr. Campbell, (toll free) 1-877-274-9097. Please don’t rely on a “free screening” for your hearing aid prescription. Most health insurances will cover the costs of a complete diagnostic evaluation by an audiologist or other medical professional. October 12, 2009, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the free cinema presentation of Young at Heart at the David A. Howe Library Auditorium. Young and young at heart are encouraged to experience a movie that defies the stereotypes of aging. “Young at Heart” is a documentary about a New England Chorus where every member is 72 or older, and every song is contemporary. Their determination to master the challenging music for shows reflects a “can-do” approach in later years. The Young @ Heart Chorus shows us it is possible to age gracefully. It is possible to grow old without growing
boring. It is possible to have white hair, a hearing aid and a device that helps you breathe, and still disco dance while singing “Stayin’ Alive”. In 2008 the film won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival, the Paris Cinema International Film Festival, Ghent Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Bergen International Film Festival, Warsaw Film Festival and others. Become inspired! Young At Heart is sponsored by the Allegany County Office for the Aging and the Allegany County Senior Foundation. Donations will be accepted to support the Allegany County United Way. In addition, Chairman Curtis Crandall from the Allegany County Board of Legislators will be present to declare the week of October 12-18, 2009, as Allegany County Aging in Place Week. On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, learn about fire extinguisher safety at the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department, Main Street, Wellsville, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. When used properly, fire extinguishers can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or controlling a fire until the fire department arrives. Yet, there is no time to read directions in an emergency! Take part in hands on demonstrations and learn about the various types of fire extinguishers; including different sizes, and what type of fire they put out. As part of the upcoming Caregiver Workshop Series presented by Allegany County Office for the Aging, Thursday, October 15, 2009 will focus on Health Insurance issues and strategies for paying for healthcare. The free caregiver workshop will be presented at the Crossroads Commerce and Conference Center, located in Belmont, New York. For further information on the entire Caregiver Workshop Series, please contact the Allegany County Office for the Aging at 585-268-9390. On Friday, October 17, 2009, join Eric Hausman, Lead Trainer on Medicare for the New York State Office for the Aging and Medicare Rights Center in NYC, to explore Medicare Basics. This free luncheon presentation will empower providers, seniors and caregivers on how to prevent healthcare fraud and better understand how to navigate the Medicare system. Lunch will be provided and pre-registration is required by contacting Lynne Palmiere at 585-593-5223 ext. 12. On Saturday, October 18, 2009, adults and seniors are invited to explore the 1st Annual Aging in Place Expo in the Wellsville Elementary Gymnasium, Wellsville, NY, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. This local initiative promotes one’s ability to continue to live safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or physical ability. The Aging in Place Expo will demonstrate how to create homes that are accessible and safe, improve healthy lifestyles, prevent falls that can lead to serious injuries, connect to transportation resources, and discover long-term care options. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the morning. Aging in Place Week concludes with the 1st Annual Ridgewalk Active Older Adult’s Experience. Don’t miss this fun, 2 mile educational trail walk for Active Older Adults 55 years of age and older who are looking for an easy to moderate “in the woods” experience. This is a guided walk, mainly off-road and on flat terrain. Enjoy some time in the woods and learn about our environment! Pre-registration is required by completing an on-line entry form at www.ridgewalk.com or by calling the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce at 585-593-5080. National Aging in Place Week was first celebrated in 2003 in six locations across the country. In 2006, events expanded to over 60 locations, which show how important this issue has become in our society. The Allegany County Community Partnership on Aging is pleased to take part and to continue to make Allegany County a great place to live and age. For further information on any of the activities, please feel free to contact the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc., at 585-593-5223. ~~~~~~~
Heel Screening Offered
Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will offer heel screenings from 1 to 3 p.m. on October 16 at the Women’s Health Center in hospital’s Irwin Medical Arts Center. Call 274-8200 for more information and to schedule an appointment. Heel screenings give patients a preliminary bone density score (T score) in a matter of minutes. Low scores typically call for a more thorough exam. Those who should receive a heel screening include women over 65 or who have had an early menopause or hysterectomy or other hormonal depletion, men over 70, men and women taking certain medications or certain cancer treatments, those with risk factors or a disease or condition that can cause bone loss, and men and women who eat a low calcium diet or have had significant height loss.

by Matilda Charles Seniors Crushed Under Debt A recent study called “The Plastic Safety Net” pegs those over age 65 as having the largest increase in percentage of debt of all the age groups. That’s not a label we should be proud of, certainly. How did this happen to us? There are real and compelling reasons for the way we’ve run up credit-card debt. • Topping the list is medical-care costs. Co-pays for doctor visits, prescription costs, dental work that insurance doesn’t cover -- it all adds up. The study says that we have on average $4,000 in medical expenses on our credit cards. • For many of us, the value of our homes has plunged. What we assumed would be a nest egg for our advancing years has in many cases become an overpriced, under-valued albatross. When repairs are needed, we have to hire others. • If we own a vehicle, repairs can be very expensive. Outside of oil changes, there’s not a single thing that can be repaired inexpensively on a car. • Our fixed income is not enough to pay for
everything we need, so we put purchases on credit cards. • Our income is too large to qualify for any services or programs, but not large enough to cover our needs, so we use credit cards. What can we do to help ourselves get out from under this mountain of debt many of us have? Here are some thoughts: --Contact your credit-card company and ask for a smaller monthly payment or a reduced interest rate. --Get credit counseling. Quite often, they can negotiate lower payments. (Ask for a referral from your local Council on Aging.) --Consider cashing in an insurance policy to pay off debt. It won’t be easy to pay off credit-card debts, but we can do it, one dollar at a time. Information Provided By Tracie Edwards, The Hearing Aid Shop, Bolivar, NY With all of the confusion that surrounds hearing loss and hearing aids I wanted to take a moment to provide some answers to commonly asked questions. Below you will find a brief explanation for those common questions Myth: If I notice my hearing has changed and do not do anything about it, things will just stay as they are. Fact: Your ears connect to your brain and your brain is where you process sounds and can tell the difference between words. If your hearing is diminished then your brain is taking in less information. Over time the brain will forget that information and not process it. The sooner you reintroduce the auditory input back into your brain, usually with hearing aids, the more seamless the rehabilitation because the brain remembers the sound. Myth: Wearing hearing aids is a sign of old age and impairment. Fact: Actually, your hearing loss is probably a more noticeable sign of old age. Always asking “what?” in conversations, avoiding phone conversations and social gatherings is more apparent than wearing small hearing instruments in your ear canals. Left unresolved, your problem could seriously affect the quality of your relationships and friendships. Myth: Few people have a hearing loss that is worth seeking treatment for. Fact: Today, 28 million people in the United States report that their daily activities and conversations are affected by some degree of hearing loss. In these reports of hearing loss, nearly 90% are simply a direct result of aging or overexposure to noise. Odds are better than one in ten that you or someone you know could easily benefit from a hearing instrument in avoiding the frustrations of hearing loss that hinder enjoying daily life. By choosing to have a hearing evaluation, you are taking the first step toward reconnecting with the world around you. If your evaluation results indicate that you have a hearing loss hearing aids may be recommended to you based upon the severity of loss. It’s important that you have the right expectations regarding wearing hearing aids. Hearing aids will give you better hearing, but they are not a cure for hearing loss. People whose expectations are too high – “I thought they would make my hearing normal” – are likely to be disappointed and may give up. Hearing Aids Can: • Help you hear and understand better in most situations • Allow you to participate more in group situations and meetings Hearing Aids Cannot: • Give you normal hearing Hearing Aids May Not: • Block ALL background noises, especially in noisy groups (even people without hearing loss hear background noise) • Let you hear very soft sounds Unlike eyeglasses, which correct your vision as soon as you first put them on, hearing aids need some time for proper adjustment. It may take several weeks or months to completely adjust to your hearing aids, so try not to get impatient.

by Matilda Charles Social Security Checks Won’t Increase Next Year Some of us are going to be disappointed next year: There will likely be no increase in COLA -- the Cost of Living Adjustment, that is. For the first time since 1975, we’ll see no increase in the amount of our Social Security checks. The COLA follows the Consumer Price Index. The Congressional Budget Office compares the cost of things this year to the previous year to estimate what will happen the following year. They estimate that there will be no increase in COLA because there is no inflation. Specifically, the annual report from the Board of Trustees for Social Security says, “A substantial decrease in the CPI from the level of the third quarter of 2008 is projected to result in zero COLAs for December 2009 and December 2010.” The Board will decide later this year, but right now, all signs are pointing to no increase. If you want to read more about this and look at the actual figures, go to www.socialsecurity.gov and put “Summary of the 2009 Annual Reports” in the search box. Take Another Look at Adult-Ed Classes The local adulteducation department's course offerings for the winter quarter arrived in the mail last week, and for

once I took a look at it. I was surprised at the variety of classes: quilting for beginners, starting a craft business, hunting safety, computers for seniors, art of the Middle Ages, school bus driver training, conversational Italian, overview of the world's religions, first aid and CPR, and dozens more. Included on the list was a beginning piano course. Which made me think: Do I qualify as a beginner? I took piano lessons for one year a very long time ago. Have the years erased everything (which admittedly wasn't much) that I ever learned? If I sign up, would I hold the class back if I couldn't keep up? Which begs the even bigger question: Can we seniors learn new skills at this stage in our lives? If so, what do we need to make sure it can happen? Part of the answer lies in how well we apply ourselves to keeping our brains and our bodies active on a daily basis. If we're constantly on the lookout for new mental
challenges, we're more equipped to continue learning new skills. Having something new and exciting to do sparks brain cells, too. If we've settled into a routine of watching a lot of television and going out to the same restaurant once a week (and ordering the same thing each time), our brains might not be as capable (at least initially) of learning something new. Diet has to play a part in our ability to learn new things, I'm sure. The brain needs proper fuel to be able to remember, reason, focus and come to conclusions. If you're ready for a mental challenge, it could be as close as your local adult education department. NOTICE As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

The revised visitation policy restricts children under 18 from visiting the hospital. Exceptions may be made for those visiting the hospital’s Long Term Care Unit, OB (siblings of newborns), and terminal and critical patients. All other exceptions will be made on a case by case basis. In addition, anyone, regardless of age, who is ill or who has ill household members should not visit the hospital. All patient rooms at Charles Cole are equipped with phones; family and friends are encouraged to call patients if they cannot visit. E-cards, which are delivered to patient rooms, are also available via the hospital’s web site, www.charlescolehospital.com CCMH enacted the revisions to its policy to protect its patients, visitors, and staff as more people are experiencing influenza-like symptoms this fall. Unlike seasonal flu, children seem to be at high risk for H1N1 and can spread the virus easily among the population. Symptoms of the flu include fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, and sore throat. Patients with H1N1 may also have nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Anyone arriving at the hospital for medical care, who suspects he/she may have the flu, should wear a mask which will be available at the main entrance, at provider offices, and the emergency entrance. Patients with influenza-like symptoms should contact their medical provider’s office if they feel they need medical treatment. Steps people can take to prevent the spread of flu include

Buy-1-Get 1 Free Shurfine Hot Dog or Sandwich Rolls...............................8 pk. $1.19 Stroehmann’s Split Top Wheat Bread...............20 oz. $1.99 frequent hand washing with soap and water or an alcoholbased hand sanitizer, covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth, disinfecting surfaces such as tables, counters, doorknobs, and childrenís toys as the virus can live on surfaces for several hours, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Those who are sick should stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever has subsided without the use of medication. Families are encouraged to have a plan in place should household members become sick. Being prepared includes having a supply of over-the-counter medications, tissues, hand sanitizer/soap, and food, and making arrangements with an employer if people need to miss work due to illness and/or school and child care closings. Vaccination is the best way to prevent the seasonal flu. People can receive the vaccine from a medical provider or a community flu clinic. The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against H1N1. Charles Cole has registered with the state Department of Health to receive H1N1 vaccine but has yet to receive a supply. The CDC has recommended that high risk groups be vaccinated first: Pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers of children younger than six months, health care and emergency medical services personnel, those six months to 24 years, and those 25 to 64 years with certain health conditions. After the high risk groups have been vaccinated, the general population will be able to receive the H1N1 vaccine. And the house where “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” was shot is still vacant, and up for sale. So much for Garden District real estate. ... Ph.: 814-598-2885 or 814-598-5216 JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Jill Jackson HOLLYWOOD ... After working together in “Invictus,” which you’ll be seeing soon, Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood again team for “Hereafter.” I’m told “Hereafter” is a supernatural thriller, and that’s all I’ve been told at the moment. ... It’s amazing how Matt Damon has risen from “just a name” to one of our bigger stars. And his success also may be attributed to his “getting out there” and promoting all of his pictures. In case you care to know more about him, he was born in Cambridge, Mass., in 1970. He attended Harvard University. His film debut was a small part in “Mystic Pizza,” which also featured Julia Roberts’ first starring role, and his career took off after that. When he was a youngster and needed money, he would “break dance” on the streets. And he lost 40 pounds to play a drug addict in “Courage Under Fire.” There’s much more to his interesting life, but then we would be writing a book instead of a column.
