Logano Struggling in Sprint Cup Joey Logano is struggling as a rookie in the Sprint Cup Series, which really shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, since Logano is all of 18 years old. Ever since Mark Martin began raving about this kid who is destined to win championships -- Logano was 13 or so at the time -- Logano has been widely regarded as a star of the future. He had to wait for his 18th birthday -he'll turn 19 on May 24, by the way -- to race in the Nationwide Series for the first time. He won his third race, at Kentucky Speedway. Logano became the first driver to win more than once at the age of 18 with his Pepsi 300 victory at Nashville

Superspeedway. In his rookie Sprint Cup season, though, the Middletown, Conn., native has struggled. He ranks 35th in the point standings. Asked how much the Nashville victory meant, Logano said, "More than you think, that's for sure. It's been a long time coming since Kentucky last year, and we should have won a lot more. To get this is what this whole team needed." Logano bears the heavy burden of driving Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 20 Toyota in Sprint Cup. The number -and team -- earned fame with Tony Stewart, who won championships in 2002 and 2005. Logano was named as Stewart's replacement when the veteran star took the role of both owner and driver at Stewart Haas Racing. In the current configuration, Cup cars are much more difficult to drive than their Nationwide Series counterparts. Logano is still trying to make the transition. But winning is important for any young driver's psyche.

Believing that Bill France’s fledging NASCAR just might catch on, Harold Brasington set out in the fall of 1949 to shape a 1.25-mile speedway on land that had once produced peanuts and cotton. Labor Day 1950. Brasington expected no more than 10,000 fans, but the crowd of more than 25,000 showed up. Californian Johnny Mantz drove to victory that day in the first Southern 500. The race took more than six hours to comlpete. Still, it set a precedent for a series that would grow to be one of the largest spectator sports in the country. Today the Darlington Raceway is known as the track “Too Tough to Tame” and “The Lady in Black.” It is still remember as the original superspeedway and as one of the pillars of the NASCAR establishment. which has aged gracefully over the years but retained its feisty charm. The track “Too Tough to Tame” continues to keep pace with the booming NASCAR world, adding lights for a night race on 2005 and expanded seating in 2006. But even more, it’s standing as a monument to the drivers and loyal fans who sowed the seeds of stock car racing 50 years ago.

Due to the recent confirmed cases of Swine Influenza A (swH1N1) in Mexico and the United States, CCMH will continue its efforts to protect patients and staff. While CCMH has been preparing for the potential of an avian flu pandemic for quite some time, the hospital is following recommendations from local emergency management officials, the Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization. “We want the public to know that, if the swine flu affects our local community, Charles Cole will be prepared,” said Lonnie Bunch, CCMH safety officer. Symptoms of swine flu are similar to the seasonal flu and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, and coughing. While there is currently no vaccine available, the swine flu can be treated with certain antiviral drugs. Call your medical provider if you think you have the flu.
