Bible Study Verse: Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make your paths straight (NIV).”
Thoughts: How much is one to trust the Lord? - With all your being. What is one not to learn on? - His or her own understanding. In how many ways is one to acknowledge God? - In all ways What will be the eventual outcome? - Straight paths. Rabbit paths, cow paths, deer paths, and manmade paths. We have all seen them. None are perfect and easy to follow. So what does a path constructed by God look like? I don’t know. But, it’s the one to follow. Your Creator sees the big picture in your life right now. All you have is a small snapshot. Later you can look back and see the trail. Only then you might say to yourself, “Oh, I get it now.” God’s paths are seen by looking back into your past.

Despite his racing bloodlines, Casey Mears has struggled among his Cup peers. (Photo: John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) between sitting on the pole at Indy and winning at Charlotte,” said Mears. “I think Charlotte is probably the biggest memory that I have right now in racing. That’s my fondest memory. At the same time, it was very exciting to sit on the pole at Indy just because of my family’s background there and history. To do that was a lot of fun. It just felt like the right place, right time. So between those two are probably my two fondest memories in racing at the moment.”

Track History: Race car promoter/car dealer Bruton Smith and driver Curtis Turner formed a partnership to build a 1.5 mile oval north of Charlotte in 1959. On June 19, 1960, the first World 600 was run at the new facility. A year later, like many superspeedways of the era, the track fell into Chapter 11 reorganization from which it eventually emerged despite lagging ticket sales. Smith left in 1962 to pursue other business interests but returned in 1975 as a majority

Nothing ever seems to work out for Casey Mears, who has thus far been unable to fulfill his potential and the legacy of his famous family. Mears’ uncle, Rick Mears, won the Indianapolis 500 four times. His father, Roger, raced at Indy and was an off-road racer of great renown. Casey, after racing in CART, made a switch to stock cars and won an ARCA race in 2003 at Michigan. Since making the move to NASCAR, Mears has competed for three teams: Ganassi (now Earnhardt Ganassi) 2003-06, Hendrick Motorsports 2007-08 and Richard Childress Racing beginning this year. His career-

best points finish was 14th with Ganassi in 2006. A 15th-place finish in the Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Speedway left Mears ranked 19th in the Sprint Cup standings. He is 69 points behind Jeff Burton and 72 ahead of rookie Joey Logano. “It was a good day for the Jack Daniel’s (his sponsor) team, but I think we were better than where we ended up,” said Mears after the Kansas race. “At times, our Chevrolet showed speeds comparable to guys in the top five and top 10, and I felt that’s where we should’ve finished. “We were a little too tight and lost some spots there at end, but our program definitely shows signs of improvement. We’ll try to build on this 15th-place finish next weekend.” Mears’ lone Cup victory to date occurred in one of NASCAR’s signature races, the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, where he crossed the finish line first on May 27, 2007. He also finished second in the 2006 Daytona 500 and won the pole at Indianapolis in 2004. “My most memorable experience ... is kind of a toss-up

HOW INVASIVE SPECIES IMPACT URBAN AND RURAL FORESTS Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Allegany/ Cattaraugus County in conjunction with The David A. Howe Public Library will host a Community Lecture on Thursday, October 22nd, 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm) on the impact of invasive species on urban and rural forests. The forests of North America have always been changing. In the past, glaciers and fires have had dramatic impacts on the distribution and composition of forests. Recently, with the increase in world commerce, insects and fungi are traveling readily around the globe and some are proving to be a formidable force in long-term forest changes. With the recent arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer in the Midwest and its subsequent spread to New York State we are faced with the possibility of losing most if not all of the ash trees in our communities and forests. Mark Whitmore, Forest Entomologist with the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University will present the lecture which will discuss the history and biology of the Emerald Ash Borer and other invasions by non-native forest pests and cover steps we can take now to lessen their impact. This program is free and open to the general public. It will be held at the David A. Howe Public Library, 155 North Main St., Wellsville, NY. Please enter the Nancy Howe Auditorium entrance off Park Avenue. f

Wellsville, NY (September 29, 2009) - Bob Garrison and Gordon Ordiway of the Rare Breed Motorcycle Club stopped by Jones Memorial Hospital recently and presented CEO Eva Benedict with the proceeds of their first “Labor Day Get Together.” Held at the club’s Alma Hill location, the event - which included a variety of motorcycle games and three bands brought out about 300 motorcycle enthusiasts and raised $300 for Jones Memorial. “Motorcycle Clubs get a lot of bad press so we decided to do something positive that would help the community,” explained Mr. Garrison. “The hospital takes care of us when we need it, so we wanted to do something to help take care of it.” According to Mrs. Benedict, the funds will be used to purchase a new video camera for general hospital use like inservices and presentations. “We certainly appreciate not only this check but all of your efforts in planning this event,” she said. “Something like this takes a lot of time and effort to organize and we appreciate what you have done on behalf of Jones Memorial.” f

BOLIVAR-RICHBURG CENTRAL SCHOOL NEWS
FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
ELEMENTARY NEWS
Dear Community Members: Our 2009-2010 school year is off to a great start. By the time you read our October newsletter we will be starting our sixth week of school...how time flies! ⌧ This year our enrollment has increased by a few students over last year. Our graduating class this year is currently at 67; 13 students over last year. This number will continue to increase over the next few years to 70 with the class of 2012. ⌧ As stated above, we are in our sixth week of school and everyone is in their routine. We have also opened our after school study center for all students. This is a great time for students to take advantage of getting some extra help or a great time to just have a quiet place to do their homework. We do provide transportation for those students to attend the study center from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity. ⌧ Our parent/teacher conference days are scheduled for November 9 & 10. You will be getting more information as we get closer to those dates. I encourage you to get involved with your child’s education. Do not take a back seat approach to this very important time in your child’s life. I understand that parents are very busy these days, but we have made our parent/ teacher schedule so that you can meet either in the afternoon, morning or evening. So there should not be a reason for you not to take the time to meet with your child’s teachers. I cannot stress the point enough to get involved. ⌧ Dedication and Service: If you see a Bolivar-Richburg Central School Board of Education member; (Michael Church, Heather Ferris, Guy Gilliland, Carol Greene, David Herne, Robert Mead, and MaryEllen Wedge) during the week of October 19-23, 2009, please take a moment to say thank you. This week has been declared as Board Recognition Week by Governor David Paterson. Each member of the Bolivar-Richburg Central School Board spends many hours reviewing school policies, developing school policies, formulating a school budget, working with parents and community groups, attending training workshops, and meeting twice a month to discuss school issues. All of the time spent on the above is without compensation and requires many hours away from their families. So you say; why would someone make such a commitment? I believe it is a commitment made because these community members are concerned with the quality of education our children receive. There are times when board members are required to make decisions that someone in the community may not agree with. These are hard decisions to make, but I can assure you that all decisions made by our board of education are with the students’ and the communities’ best interests in mind. ⌧ This year we hired 4 new staff members. Due to Norma Bartlett’s retirement, we were able to recall Nicole Kachermeyer as the instrumental music teacher. Through Federal Stimulus funds, we were able to recall one elementary teacher who is now working at both the pre-school in the morning and at the elementary in the afternoon. We were very happy that we were able to save these 2 teaching positions. We were also able to restore director of curriculum and instruction position which was originally cut from the budget and moved under BOCES services. ⌧ As you may or may not know Jennifer Sorochin who was our director of curriculum for the past 3 years had taken an administrator position in another school district. We felt that this position was too important to eliminate. We looked within our district to see if there was someone who could continue to oversee our new reading program and our district-wide instruction of the Thoughtful Classroom and supervise our Pre-K program in order to meet the new state standards and better prepare our students for Kindergarten. We were fortunate to have Michelle McDowell who currently teaches 7th and 8th grade English apply for the position. I feel the district once again has a person in the curriculum and instruction position that will provide the curriculum leadership that provides staff development for our teachers and who will oversee our curriculum Pre-K - 12 grades. ⌧ Most recently we had a group of community members attend one of our board of education meetings which are held twice a month on the first and third Tuesdays. It was nice to see community members attend this meeting and we continue to encourage community members to attend. Please do not wait for a concern to arise before you attend a meeting. Many important decisions are made at each meeting that affect all aspects of our school system. I must remind you that each board meeting is a public meeting. This means that the public is invited to attend but it is not a meeting where there is dialogue between attendees and the board. If you wish to address the board regarding an agenda item, you will need to contact Connie Emery in the superintendent’s office and indicate that you would like to address the board regarding a specific agenda item. Please give Connie a few details about your request so that if we need to have additional information available for you we can be prepared. If you just want to address the board on a specific issue, but it is not on the agenda, you would need to speak with the superintendent who will discuss the issue with you and if still necessary will then place your name on the agenda as a special topic item. I have asked that our Board of Education meeting pamphlet be placed on our web site so you can read all the specifics for addressing the board of education at a meeting. Also, the agenda for each meeting is on our access channel by Friday of the week before the meeting or you can stop in at the superintendent’s office for a copy on that Friday. Attending a board meeting is an eye-opening experience and it will give you a better idea of how the board works. Each year new board members are elected to a 3-year term and this year there will be 2 seats open. If you have ever considered running for a board of education position, I would strongly suggest that you attend a few meetings to see if that is what you would really like to do. It is not an easy job and it comes with much responsibility to the whole school system and community. Again, we encourage and welcome your attendance at our board of education meetings. In closing, I continue to ask our community how they feel our school system is doing in providing a good education at an affordable cost. If you have comments on this question or you would like more information or if you would like me to address your group or club, please let me know.
By: Michael Schott Elementary Principal We are now halfway through our first marking period at school, and if your child is struggling in any area, you should have received an interim report from your child’s teacher. Please work with your child’s teacher in helping your child meet success. Homework is a very important part of school, and if your child is not finding time at home to do their school work, that can lead to serious problems as the school year moves along. Project Catch-Up has started for students in grades 3 - 5 and this program is designed to help your child get caught up on their work and/or get extra help from a teacher. The program runs three days a week, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for an hour after school. Transportation is provided for this program. If your child needs to stay for Project Catch-Up, their teacher will send a form home for you to sign. Please sign the form and return it to school. Our school is once again participating in the “Fitness for Kids Challenge”. Last year we were one of the top schools and received $1,000. I would like your support and help in making that happen again this year. Your child will be bringing home a form for you to fill out giving them permission to participate. I ask that you return the form to school even though it says you may fill it out on line or fill it out and return it yourself. Once I have all the student forms, I will send them in. Unlike last year, this is a one-time deal once you have completed the form, the students will then only need to complete their activity sheets each week. The program runs October through May. Please mark your calendars for November 9 and 10, as we will be having parent conferences on those dates. Conferences on the 9th will run from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and conferences on the 10th will run from 8:00 a.m. until noon. There will be no school for students on October 23, as the teachers will be participating in a countywide in-service day. Picture retake day is scheduled for October 29.
Joseph DeCerbo Superintendent of Schools
SECONDARY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The Importance of Homework Now that school is back in full swing you have probably noticed that your child is busy at home completing homework assignments. If you have not noticed this aspect of their education, it might be time for you to have a serious conversation with your son or daughter and their teachers. Homework, although often seen as trivial or busy work, really is an important aspect of your child’s educational growth. This task should not be taken lightly and it is critical that you help play an active role in ensuring that homework assignments are completed in a timely manner and at an acceptable level. Homework serves many purposes in the educational setting. Homework is the bridge between school and home. By being involved in the homework process, you can be more aware of what is being taught in school, as well as create an opportunity to offer positive reinforcement in relation to the importance of school. Homework also allows teachers to monitor the independent practice and understanding of students. Often students can complete tasks in class with assistance from the teacher or another classmate, but to truly understand a concept your son or daughter needs to be able to complete an assignment independently. The drill and practice associated with homework helps to reinforce the daily classroom lessons, as well as improve the chances for academic success. Finally, homework can play a vital role in making sure your child realizes the importance of responsibility when they leave this school. The task of remembering homework assignments, organizing necessary materials, managing time and returning assignments to school for a grade, helps to strengthen their sense of responsibility. These very important skills will give your son or daughter the tools needed to be successful in college, at work and in their personal life. It is important that your child realizes that you take their homework and education very seriously. There are some simple steps that you as parents can do to help facilitate the successful completion of homework assignments. First it is important that you communicate regularly with your child’s teachers. As a parent you now have access to assigned homework by going to www.brcs.wnyric.org and clicking on homework links. Do not fall into the trap of relying solely on your child for information regarding their homework assignments. It is also important to create a regular time to be set aside for homework. Even if your child claims not to have any homework, this time can be used for review of previously taught material. Another way in which you can help to insure success is to pick a place for homework to be completed that is free of distractions such as the television and radio. By creating a familiar time and place to work on school assignments you will be helping to create a routine that fosters success. Finally, and I cannot stress this enough, be there for your child. Offer help, provide encouragement, praise success, communicate with teachers and most importantly make sure that your child knows that you have goals and aspirations for them when they grow up. Make sure that your children realize that you see education as a way for them to be successful and achieve these goals. When considering the major implications that homework will have on the academic success of your son or daughter, it is obvious that the more involved you are in their homework process, the greater likelihood that they will be successful here at school. We at the Bolivar-Richburg Central School District applaud you for your efforts. John R. Marshall Secondary Principal

COLLEGE/RECRUITER VISITATION SCHEDULE College and recruiter visits are announced by a poster outside the guidance office and also over the morning announcements. PSAT, ACT AND SAT TESTING Some juniors will take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) on Wednesday, October 14, in the B-RCS cafeteria at 8:00 A.M. The cost of the test is $13.00 and students must register in the Guidance Office. We are limited to 30 tests, so students should register early. The PSAT is a “warm-up” for the SAT and also enters juniors into scholarship competition. PSAT results should be in the first week of December. At that time, I will review the test with students and they will receive a printout of their results to take home. The next national test that juniors will take is the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) or American College Test (ACT) in the spring (April to June) of next year. I’ll speak with juniors about how to register early next year. Many seniors have been busy by taking or re-taking the SAT or ACT. Either one of these tests is used by colleges for one of two purposes - as part of the acceptance process or to help colleges determine the appropriate placement of students into math and English courses. The next ACT test date is December 12 (registration deadline is November 6). The next SAT test date is December 5 (registration deadline is October 30). SECONDARY LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER By Ms. Dimmig September has been a busy month in the Secondary Library Media Center. Mr. Allen’s 6th grade English classes came for Library orientation and book selection, Mrs. McDowell’s 7th and 8th grade classes chose books for their 1st quarter book reports due the end of Oct., Mrs. Donahue’s English 11 and AP English chose books for silent reading, Ms. Snow’s Foods class used the recipes web sites to start creating personalized cookbooks, Mrs. Cady’s Accounting class researched accounting scandals, Mr. Allen’s 6th Grade Social Studies learned how to use the Grolier’s Multimedia Encyclopedia to research countries, Mr. Kottwitz’s Economic classes began researching for their comparative economics paper and Mrs. Cady’s Careers and Financial Management Class began researching a person who started a business. On Line subscriptions: We have a new database ProQuest Platinum provided by the state Library. The passwords for Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier Mutlimedia and The New Book of Knowledge have changed so students need to see Ms. Dimmig for the school password. We have a new encyclopedia this year, The World Book Encyclopedias. Students need to see Ms. Dimmig for the user name and password. Career information: The Library Media Center has many career and college search books available. There are also books on how to write the college application essay.
Parents of US History 11 and AP US History Students: DEAR LIVING ENVIRONMENT STUDENTS! We have finished one unit (ecology) and you should be breathing a sigh of relief from finishing your first exam. The two books we read, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and There’s a Hair in my Dirt by Gary Larson, were used to explain concepts that are vital for biology....the interaction of all organisms and human’s role in the environment. We will be heading right into photosynthesis and respiration as these processes are necessary for life as we know it. Keep on checking the BRCS homepage for homework and be sure to keep up with labs. JUNIOR CLASS OF 2011 Mrs. Hawver and Ms. Dimmig At the Class of 2011 meeting in September, your student received a dues statement. If your student owes any dues they should be paid this fall because tickets for the 2010 prom can not purchased until their dues are current. The cost of prom tickets and dues at the same time will be expensive. Class dues cover the cost of your students cap and gown next year and the class share of prom expenses and any other class expenses such as the cost of materials not donated for the Homecoming float. If your child is not going to the Prom, it would be wise to pay their dues in their Junior year as there are many expenses during a students Senior year. These can include such things as SAT or ACT fees, senior pictures, yearbook, college application fees, senior class trip, senior sweatshirts, announcements, college deposits, graduation parties etc.
Have you ever wanted to know how your child is doing in a class at any given time? Wouldn’t it be nice to check your child’s grades in a class from your own computer at home? Have you ever wished you could know if your child is keeping up with homework and studying for tests and quizzes? Now, you can...without waiting for a 5 week progress report or a quarterly report card. I am using a program called SnapGrades to let students and their parents know how they are doing in my US history classes. Each student and parent has their own username and password. Parent log-in information was mailed on October 5th. To log in, go to my web site: www.mr-baldwin.com. Click on the GREEN APPLE on the right side of the page. Enter the log-in information mailed to you and Ta-Daa! ... you can see your child’s current grade in my US history class and see what score your child received on every graded assignment. You can check 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from any computer connected to the internet. It is completely secure - only you and your child can see your child’s grades. If you have questions, please e-mail me at

Mr. DiGirolamo SENIORS MAKE FUTURE PLANS I have met with all seniors to discuss their post-high school plans. Students are being instructed to begin preparing their resume if they are interested in finding employment directly after high school. Those students who are interested in college have been given several important handouts about financial aid and the college selection process. It is highly recommended that seniors complete their college application(s) by Thanksgiving recess. However, some programs require students to apply earlier to ensure that their program of choice is not filled. Completed applications should be brought to me for a final check and mailing. Also, since many students are now applying online, it is vitally important that they let me or my secretary know so that we mail the student’s transcript. Colleges require a transcript and will not process a student’s application until they have one. Regarding financial aid, in December, parents of seniors will be receiving a letter inviting them to a financial aid workshop that will be held at B-RCS in January. At this meeting, we will walk parents through the process of applying for financial assistance. This program is open to anyone wishing more information on the financial aid process. By the way, many brochures on financial aid are available in our guidance office or at www.hesc.org. Any parent who wishes more information about the college selection process or financial aid can call Mr. DiGirolamo at school.

The freshman class wrapped up a busy homecoming week culminating in our 1950’s themed float which we showcased in the annual homecoming parade. A great deal of hard work was put in by many members of the class of 2013. All participants had a tremendous amount of fun and we hope that even more will come help next year. The freshman class would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Ingalls for allowing us to use their garage for the float construction. We would also like to send out a warm thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Nolan for the use of their trailer for the float. With homecoming all wrapped up, there are a couple of reminders that members of the class of 2013 still need to be aware of: ⌧ Class dues need to be turned in by Oct. 15th. The class dues are ten dollars per year and can be paid all at once ($40) or annually ($10). ⌧ The freshman class fundraiser will begin on Nov. 2. The class will be selling Zapa-Snack products. This is a great fundraiser and important for all students thinking of going on the senior trip to plan on participating. If you have any questions in regards to class dues and our fundraiser you can contact Mrs. Auman or Mr. Kinnicutt using the school e-mail or by calling the school. Thank you, Mrs. Auman, Mr. Kinnicutt Class Advisors, Class of 2013

Mr. Keir It’s been a good start to a new school year, though very busy as you might expect. Our department has seen some changes this year, most notably the retirement of Norma Bartlett. We wish her the best in her retirement and thank her for her years of musical service to the students and the community. I have been moved into her position with a few additions to my schedule. There has also been a deletion that has been difficult, but understandable. Mrs. Baldwin, the choir accompanist, has also decided to retire. We thank her for all she has done for the choirs and for sharing her gift with us. We also wish her the best in her future endeavors. Our accompanying needs have not been solidified and so perhaps someone reading this may be well suited to fill that role, or knows someone that is. I invite anyone who may be interested to contact me. All of our vocal groups continue to work on perfecting the craft of singing and singing in a group. 6th grade choir is adjusting to having folders and real music for the first time. Jr. High is adjusting to having Tenors and Basses for the first time, and the two Senior High choirs are adjusting to having me for the first time. The students are very talented and it is my desire to make beautiful music together and create wonderful memories in the short time that we have together. Congratulations go out to one very special music student who was chosen to represent Bolivar-Richburg at the NYSSMA Conference All-State in Rochester as a Tenor 2. This is a very distinct honor in which very few musicians ever receive. You must be the best of the best and at the very minimum score perfectly on the most difficult of music. Jamison Rilling achieved that perfect score last spring and will be attending All-State in early December. I would also like to congratulate two of our high school vocal students for winning the role of choir president, one from each choir. Breanne Hackett, grade 10, was chosen for the Varsity choir and Jamison Riling, grade 12, was chosen for the Senior High choir. These individuals were elected by their peers. One of their first jobs is to join me in selecting section leaders for the Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, and Basses. Please feel free to contact me if you have any thoughts or concerns. Chris Keir

Get Into Shape at the Bolivar-Richburg Fitness Center. Workout Mondays – Thursdays 5:30 to 8:00 MIDDLE SCHOOL GUIDANCE 6-9 Christy Crandall-Bean 6th Graders Experience Houghton’s Ropes Course During September, the 6th graders attended the Houghton College Ropes course. This is a challenge course that we participate in as part of our character education program. The character traits we try to target on the trip include: responsibility to self and others, cooperation, integrity, leadership, and persistence. The ropes course is a great experiential outdoor classroom. Students learn that they can accomplish more than they initially believe they can. This in turn bolsters their self-confidence and willingness to attempt new goals after they have gone through the course. We also have a lot of fun on the course and students often see their classmates in a different light!

EARTH SCIENCE We have just finished studying the Earth in general from its measurements to mapping. This includes latitude and longitude as well as using a compass and GPS. We will now dig into the composition of our planet by studying rocks and minerals and after that, the forces at work inside the Earth. This will include the study of earthquakes and Plate Tectonics. If you have a child in Earth Science please encourage him/her to do all the daily work and stay caught up. It is very important that all practice work be done so that the final assessments for each unit are the best ones possible. Playing catch-up is never a good strategy for any course of study. We all want our students to do the very best that they can. Happy Fall!!! Mr. Gibbons

I also played soccer for the Lady Highlanders and now am currently the assistant coach for the Lady Highlanders. Upon graduation I substituted in local school districts such as Letchworth. I then landed a long term sub position in April ‘09 at Perry Middle School instructing Physical Education grades 5-8. I am very excited to be here in the Bolivar-Richburg area and can not wait to get involved!
The students also learned that Force = mass times acceleration (F=ma) as they pushed each other in a wheelbarrow. They quickly discovered that more mass means less acceleration. Also pictured is an indoor experiment that used a pop bottle and cork. When the mixture inside reacted, the cork flew one way and the bottle the other. This helped them understand for every force there is an equal and opposite force. These were only three of our many experiments as we studied forces.

FIRST GRADE Mrs. Allen, Mr. Bogey, Mrs. McClellan, Mrs. Scott ..... First grade is in full swing, and everyone is busy making new friends, getting reacquainted with others and learning the classroom routines. There’s always something exciting happening in the classroom. We can’t wait to get to school to see what is on the agenda for the day! We started our first reading anthology with stories like Sam, Come Back, Pig in a Wig and The Big Blue Ox. Everyone is doing a great job of reading the little books and returning them on a regular basis, too. We have some awesome readers in first grade! Since it was Johnny Appleseed’s birthday this month, some of us made our own applesauce. We brought in our own apples, peeled them and cut them up all by ourselves. It was the first time many of us had real homemade applesauce. It made the room smell wonderful and it tasted delicious. Mrs. McClellan’s and Mr. Bogey’s class had a visit from Grandma Applesauce. At the end of the month, we went to see the theatrical production of Junie B. Jones. We have enjoyed listening to the stories in class, so it was a real treat to see them acted out. We even compared the play to the books we read. As you can see, first grade is a lot of fun!!! We are going to start learning about fire prevention next month. We will be making posters and talking about ways to stay safe around fire. September birthdays that we celebrated are Mark Pangburn and Aliya Perrin. October birthdays are Tasha Wedge and Sarah Clark. Congratulations to our first students of the month. These students were selected because of their outstanding behavior and respectful attitude towards others. They are friendly, cooperative and always willing to lend a helping hand. Keep up the good work! Mrs. Scott’s - Roger Geist Mrs. Allen’s - Aliya Perrin Mr. Bogey’s - Jacob Carmichael Mrs. McClellan’s - Alex MacDonell
SECOND GRADE

October birthday wishes go out to Selena Peters on the 1st, Rashai Swift and Riley Danaher on the 5th, Payge Poweska on the 25th, and Felicia Nichols on the 30th. Our students of the month are: Emma from Mrs. Hill’s room. Emma is always working hard, being kind to her classmates. She is a huge help in the classroom. Thank you, Emma! Jacob McDonald from Mrs. Lemaster’s and Miss Vosburg’s room. He is well behaved, works hard, and completes his homework on a regular basis. Way to go, Jacob! Margaret Schiralli from Mrs. Wolcott’s room. Maggie is the ideal student. She is always on task and listening. She loves learning, and she wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Hannah Wiatrowski from Mrs. Babcock’s class. Hannah is a great listener and a responsible worker. She is a helpful and kind friend. Good job, Hannah! Congratulations to these wonderful children for their hard work. As you can see, we’ve been very busy in second grade! We’ll be back next month with more exciting things to tell. Some children from Mrs. Babcock’s class made tree houses to go with our story Iris and Walter.
Ms. Harmon..... Happy autumn everyone! It is hard to believe that one month of school is already behind us; where did the time go? We have been very busy this month is our classroom. We celebrated Ethan’s 9th birthday on September 25. We have been learning about coins, using number lines, estimation, and greater than/less than in math. We have made some terrific posters about wild animals and New York State that are hanging on the wall outside our classroom. Some of us have even learned about rattlesnakes. The student of the month for September is Brenda Hendryx. Brenda has gone out of her way to help our newest class member feel a part of our classroom; she even explained the fire drill rules to Caylin. So, thank you and congratulations Brenda.
Mrs. Babcock, Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Lemaster, Mrs. Wolcott.....
THIRD GRADE Mrs. Wolcott’s class had fun making applesauce in honor of Johnny Appleseed’s birthday.
Can you believe that the first month of school is already over? It certainly went fast! We’d like to thank so many parents for coming to our Open House and having the chance to meet. Our month progressed with reading some very interesting stories in our reading series. We began with “Iris and Walter.” This realistic fiction story was about a girl named Iris who moved from the city to the country and met a new friend, Walter. They had many fun adventures in Walter’s tree house. Some classes made their own tree houses, either as a home project or in school. Next, we moved on to non-fiction with the story, “Exploring Space.” Students learned all about an astronaut’s job in space, as well as the planets. “Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night” was a great story about camping. Students also made constellations, as we learned about the Big and Little Dippers and some other favorites. The first and second graders traveled to the high school on September 27 to see the Theatre Works production of “Junie B. Jones”. Seeing the book brought to life through music and acting was a thrilling experience. We’ll be moving on to learn about the desert in another non-fiction selection. Students will be working on desert reports and projects over the next few weeks, as well as doing a compare/contrast lesson on deserts and rain forests. You might here your children talking about text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world connections. We’ve been learning about making connections through Reading with Meaning. Some of our students have been giving book talks and doing book projects, as well. We’ve also worked on sensory imaging to involve our senses in what we read. All these things help us to be better with our reading comprehension skills. Students have been working on Fact Families in math, as well as adding 3 and 4 addends. We’ve just about mastered our doubles facts, and we’re working on the doubles plus 1 strategy. Any extra help at home is always appreciated. Fire Prevention Week brought us our annual visit from the Richburg Fire Department, as well as the poster contest. Everyone always enjoys seeing and learning about the trucks and equipment. Mrs. Lemaster’s class has certainly enjoyed having Miss Vosburg here as their student teacher. She brought fun and games into the classroom to help with our math, spelling, reading and phonics. She held high expectations for each child, and students enjoyed rising to meet those expectations. She was kind and loving, but when she spoke, students knew they had better listen because she meant business. Miss Vosburg will be going on to teach fifth graders in Olean at the end of October. Of course, she will
Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Smith, Ms. Miles..... CONGRATULATIONS to the students of the month: Adam Jones, Andrew Cornell, and Lucas Cornelius!! Way to go, guys!! We have been busy reading and enjoying new stories, and while doing it, we have been comparing things/people in them as well as deciding on whether they are realistic or fantasy. HAPPY BIRTHDAY this month to Mikayla Lasnick, Lucas Cornelius, Baylee Thomas, Dominic Dziak, Dawson Parker, Sydney Root, and Savannah Puccinelli!! Parents are asked to make sure their children study their spelling words, keep up on their math facts, and stay on top of any homework, if assigned. Parent conferences are one month away. We’ll have a better picture on how the children are doing at that point. Thanks for your help!!
FOURTH GRADE Mr. Conklin, Mrs. Perry, Mr. Pruch..... 4th Grade has gotten off to a great start! Students are into the groove of switching classes and learning what it is like to be a fourth grader. In math, we have been studying a unit on place value while recalling a lot of information the students had already learned in early elementary. We will be moving full speed ahead into adding and subtracting numbers to 10,000 as we discover many strategies to help us along the way. Science classes have been working with static electricity experiments at home and with their electrical circuit’s kit in school. Each Wednesday throughout the year, we will be sharing our nature observations with each other. We’re also gaining experience with the Study Island science programs. Everyone works hard and seems eager to come to class each day! Mr. Pruch’s student of the month is Amber Stuck. Amber is an excellent student and a very kind and thoughtful young lady! In social studies we have finished our unit on New York’s geography and natural wonders. We will begin our unit on the Native Americans that live in New York. We will be learning their history, traditions and customs. Congratulations to Carter Johnson for being the September Student of the month for Mr. Conklin’s room. So far, everyone is working hard and adjusting to 4th grade nicely. In writing class, we have been focusing on grammar and writing skills. We have learned about declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative sentences. We have written compound sentences. We’re also determining which nouns are common and proper. FIFTH GRADE Mrs. Cawley, Mr. Lounsberry, Miss Weitzel..... The first month of school was an interesting transition for the incoming fifth grade students. The vast majority of our students have adapted quite well, while others have taken a little longer to become adjusted to our routine and schedule. One of our goals is to prepare each of the students for an easier transition to the middle school in the high school building next year. One strategy to accomplish this is to make the students more organized and responsible, and we have been working hard to achieve it. In social studies we learned about the first inhabitants in North America and about archaeologists who study these people. Then we followed up by discussing several groups in Central and South America. Now, we are working on a lengthy unit on American Indians. During the course of this unit, we will learn about many cultural groups scattered throughout North America. Miss Weitzel’s math classes have been working on place value using whole numbers
Motivating Kids to Read The only way to get better at reading is to do it, and reading at home helps make every child a better reader. All parents want their child to do well in school and parent involvement is one of the key components of a child’s success in reading. You can be involved in setting aside a regular time for daily reading as well as reading aloud with your child. And of course, praising the child’s efforts! Student achievement is significantly improved by just 20 extra minutes of reading each day (Black, 2003). “JUMPING WITH JILL” Rock Stars perform at a PEP Grant assembly held at the elementary school on Friday, September 18. Jill Jayne, musician, dietitian, actress and educator, presented an outstanding rock ‘n roll program about health and nutrition geared for children of all ages.
FITNESS FOR KIDS CHALLENGE The elementary students will once again be participating in the Fitness For Kids Challenge put on by The Independent Health Foundation. Last year Bolivar-Richburg Elementary was one of the top schools and received $1,000 for our effort. The program has a few changes for this year, which will hopefully make things easier for everyone. Some things to know about the flu During the spring of 2009, a new flu virus started making people sick in the United States and throughout the world. At first, this illness was called “swine flu,” but now you may hear it called novel (new) H1N1 influenza. To date, most people affected with the novel H1N1 virus have experienced mild to moderate illness, similar to seasonal flu. However, the flu can be serious, and many more people may get the flu this school year. What can you do? ⌧ Get the seasonal flu vaccine now. It will not protect you from novel H1N1 flu, but seasonal flu is also circulating and can make you just as sick. ⌧ Get the novel H1N1 flu vaccine as soon as it is available, according to the priority groups established by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Everyone should eventually be able to get the novel H1N1 flu vaccine, but those at high priority are: - pregnant women - Health care workers and emergency medical responders -People caring for infants under 6 months of age -Children and young adults from 6 months to 24 years -People aged 25 to 64 with underlying medical conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes) ⌧ Sick kids should stay home! They should NOT go to school, work, or out in public. If you think you have the flu, you should stay home and away form others. Individuals with flu-like symptoms should remain home for at least 24 hours after fever has disappeared (without the use of fever-reducing medication). ⌧ Practice healthy habits. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze with a tissue - not your hand. If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Wash hands often with soap and warm water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Wash and rub hands for 20 seconds - as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. Flu in our school We expect that some people in our school will get the flu. Treatment for the novel H1N1 is the same as for seasonal flu. Rest, fluids and medicine to reduce body aches and fever, are all that most of us need to recover. For people with certain underlying medical conditions, such as those with asthma and other chronic diseases, flu can be more serious, and these individuals should contact their health care provider. About school closures The H1N1 flu outbreak that first occurred in the spring of 2009 taught us that closing schools does not reduce the spread of the novel H1N1 flu. The flu moves too fast. That is why federal, state, and local officials no longer recommend school closures due to the flu except in special circumstances. For example, some schools might close because of high student, faculty, or staff absenteeism. Your family should plan what they will do if school is closed for a time. More information about the flu is available at www.nyhealth.gov and www.flu.gov. This information is brought to you by the New York State Department of Health, the New York State Education Department and the Bolivar-Richburg Central School. and decimals. We have also compared and put whole numbers and decimals in certain value orders. Upcoming in math we will be working on reviewing addition and subtraction of whole numbers and learn how to add and subtract decimals. Mrs. Cawley’s science classes have been learning about rocks and minerals. So far, they have learned what some of the tests are that scientists use to identify unknown minerals. Everyone had a chance to do the testing and observe and record their results. The class has now starting learning about rocks. If you don’t know the difference between a rock and a mineral, ask a fifth grader! All of the Fifth Graders are using a new reading series. The main theme for the first unit is facing challenges. We have discussed many types of challenges, while reading some interesting stories. We have also discussed genres and have identified story elements. The fifth grade students of the month are Samantha Burdick from Mr. Lounsberry’s homeroom, Zack Duesler, from Mrs. Cawley’s homeroom, and from Miss Weitzel’s homeroom, Hadley Ferris. They always have a smile for everyone, are very polite and mannerly and a pleasure to have in class. Congratulations to each of them.
completed, I ask that these forms be returned to your child’s teacher by Wednesday October 14, and I will send all the forms in at once. This year’s monetary awards will go to the ten schools with the highest percentage of participation. Therefore, it is very important that we get everyone to participate. Each student will need to do some sort of physical activity each day and record it on his or her activity form. Once 7 activities have been completed, return the activity sheet to school. The more forms a student completes each week the better chance they have at winning some great prizes. This year the prizes will be mailed to the school to be given to the winners each month. So, get your child active and participating in the Fitness For Kids Challenge.

The music ensemble, “Music of Your Life” gave a great performance while everyone enjoyed their refreshments donated by Cuba Memorial Hospital, followed by the Awards Ceremony that honored Growing Stronger participants and Growing Stronger Volunteer Leaders. “I was so impressed with the collaborative efforts that went into making the Gala such a successful event,” said Williams. “I would like to thank the Allegany County Office for the Aging for their assistance in supporting the Growing Stronger program. I would also like to thank Cuba Memorial Hospital for donating all of the delicious refreshments provided at the Senior Gala. In addition, a big thank you to Allegany County United Way for their continued support in the Growing Stronger program. by Matilda Charles Social Security Checks Won’t Increase Next Year Some of us are going to be disappointed next year: There will likely be no increase in COLA -- the Cost of Living Adjustment, that is. For the first time since 1975, we’ll see no increase in the amount of our Social Security checks. The COLA follows the Consumer Price Index. The Congressional Budget Office compares the cost of things this year to the previous year to estimate what will happen the following year. They estimate that there will be no increase in COLA because there is no inflation. If you want to read more about this and look at the actual figures, go to www.socialsecurity.gov and put “Summary of the 2009 Annual Reports” in the search box.

Are you caring for an older person? Do you check on your parent every day at his or her home? Do you provide around-the-clock care in your home? “Caregivers often find themselves in a situation where they are providing more and more care for an older person”, said Kim Toot, Director of the Office for the Aging. “Eighty percent of the care provided to the elderly is provided by informal caregivers who are family members, friends or neighbors. We want to support their efforts by
giving them tools to make their jobs easier.” The Allegany County Office for the Aging is presenting a Caregivers Workshop. This is being sponsored by the Allegany County Caregivers Coalition, a program of the Allegany Western Steuben Rural Health Network and the Allegany County Office for the Aging. The training will be held at Crossroads Business Center in Belmont. Classes began on Thursday, October 8th and continue once a week through November 12th. The facilitators for the workshop are Mary Gardner-Ruch and Tobi Nickerson, Care Coordinators for the Office for the Aging. The program schedule

October 12, 2009, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the free cinema presentation of Young at Heart at the David A. Howe Library Auditorium. Young and young at heart are encouraged to experience a movie that defies the stereotypes of aging. “Young at Heart” is a documentary about a New England Chorus where every member is 72 or older, and every song is contemporary. Their determination to master the challenging music for shows reflects a “can-do” approach in later years. The Young @ Heart Chorus shows us it is possible to age gracefully. It is possible to grow old without growing
boring. It is possible to have white hair, a hearing aid and a device that helps you breathe, and still disco dance while singing “Stayin’ Alive”. In 2008 the film won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival, the Paris Cinema International Film Festival, Ghent Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Bergen International Film Festival, Warsaw Film Festival and others. Become inspired! Young At Heart is sponsored by the Allegany County Office for the Aging and the Allegany County Senior Foundation. Donations will be accepted to support the Allegany County United Way. In addition, Chairman Curtis Crandall from the Allegany County Board of Legislators will be present to declare the week of October 12-18, 2009, as Allegany County Aging in Place Week. On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, learn about fire extinguisher safety at the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department, Main Street, Wellsville, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. When used properly, fire extinguishers can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or controlling a fire until the fire department arrives. Yet, there is no time to read directions in an emergency! Take part in hands on demonstrations and learn about the various types of fire extinguishers; including different sizes, and what type of fire they put out. As part of the upcoming Caregiver Workshop Series presented by Allegany County Office for the Aging, Thursday, October 15, 2009 will focus on Health Insurance issues and strategies for paying for healthcare. The free caregiver workshop will be presented at the Crossroads Commerce and Conference Center, located in Belmont, New York. For further information on the entire Caregiver Workshop Series, please contact the Allegany County Office for the Aging at 585-268-9390. On Friday, October 17, 2009, join Eric Hausman, Lead Trainer on Medicare for the New York State Office for the Aging and Medicare Rights Center in NYC, to explore Medicare Basics. This free luncheon presentation will empower providers, seniors and caregivers on how to prevent healthcare fraud and better understand how to navigate the Medicare system. Lunch will be provided and pre-registration is required by contacting Lynne Palmiere at 585-593-5223 ext. 12. On Saturday, October 18, 2009, adults and seniors are invited to explore the 1st Annual Aging in Place Expo in the Wellsville Elementary Gymnasium, Wellsville, NY, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. This local initiative promotes one’s ability to continue to live safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or physical ability. The Aging in Place Expo will demonstrate how to create homes that are accessible and safe, improve healthy lifestyles, prevent falls that can lead to serious injuries, connect to transportation resources, and discover long-term care options. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the morning. Aging in Place Week concludes with the 1st Annual Ridgewalk Active Older Adult’s Experience. Don’t miss this fun, 2 mile educational trail walk for Active Older Adults 55 years of age and older who are looking for an easy to moderate “in the woods” experience. This is a guided walk, mainly off-road and on flat terrain. Enjoy some time in the woods and learn about our environment! Pre-registration is required by completing an on-line entry form at www.ridgewalk.com or by calling the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce at 585-593-5080. National Aging in Place Week was first celebrated in 2003 in six locations across the country. In 2006, events expanded to over 60 locations, which show how important this issue has become in our society. The Allegany County Community Partnership on Aging is pleased to take part and to continue to make Allegany County a great place to live and age. For further information on any of the activities, please feel free to contact the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc., at 585-593-5223. ~~~~~~~
Heel Screening Offered Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will offer heel screenings from 1 to 3 p.m. on October 16 at the Women’s Health Center in hospital’s Irwin Medical Arts Center. Call 274-8200 for more information and to schedule an appointment. Heel screenings give patients a preliminary bone density score (T score) in a matter of minutes. Low scores typically call for a more thorough exam. Those who should receive a heel screening include women over 65 or who have had an early menopause or hysterectomy or other hormonal depletion, men over 70, men and women taking certain medications or certain cancer treatments, those with risk factors or a disease or condition that can cause bone loss, and men and women who eat a low calcium diet or have had significant height loss.

by Matilda Charles Seniors Crushed Under Debt A recent study called “The Plastic Safety Net” pegs those over age 65 as having the largest increase in percentage of debt of all the age groups. That’s not a label we should be proud of, certainly. How did this happen to us? There are real and compelling reasons for the way we’ve run up credit-card debt. • Topping the list is medical-care costs. Co-pays for doctor visits, prescription costs, dental work that insurance doesn’t cover -- it all adds up. The study says that we have on average $4,000 in medical expenses on our credit cards. • For many of us, the value of our homes has plunged. What we assumed would be a nest egg for our advancing years has in many cases become an overpriced, under-valued albatross. When repairs are needed, we have to hire others. • If we own a vehicle, repairs can be very expensive. Outside of oil changes, there’s not a single thing that can be repaired inexpensively on a car. • Our fixed income is not enough to pay for
everything we need, so we put purchases on credit cards. • Our income is too large to qualify for any services or programs, but not large enough to cover our needs, so we use credit cards. What can we do to help ourselves get out from under this mountain of debt many of us have? Here are some thoughts: --Contact your credit-card company and ask for a smaller monthly payment or a reduced interest rate. --Get credit counseling. Quite often, they can negotiate lower payments. (Ask for a referral from your local Council on Aging.) --Consider cashing in an insurance policy to pay off debt. It won’t be easy to pay off credit-card debts, but we can do it, one dollar at a time. Information Provided By Tracie Edwards, The Hearing Aid Shop, Bolivar, NY With all of the confusion that surrounds hearing loss and hearing aids I wanted to take a moment to provide some answers to commonly asked questions. Below you will find a brief explanation for those common questions Myth: If I notice my hearing has changed and do not do anything about it, things will just stay as they are. Fact: Your ears connect to your brain and your brain is where you process sounds and can tell the difference between words. If your hearing is diminished then your brain is taking in less information. Over time the brain will forget that information and not process it. The sooner you reintroduce the auditory input back into your brain, usually with hearing aids, the more seamless the rehabilitation because the brain remembers the sound. Myth: Wearing hearing aids is a sign of old age and impairment. Fact: Actually, your hearing loss is probably a more noticeable sign of old age. Always asking “what?” in conversations, avoiding phone conversations and social gatherings is more apparent than wearing small hearing instruments in your ear canals. Left unresolved, your problem could seriously affect the quality of your relationships and friendships. Myth: Few people have a hearing loss that is worth seeking treatment for. Fact: Today, 28 million people in the United States report that their daily activities and conversations are affected by some degree of hearing loss. In these reports of hearing loss, nearly 90% are simply a direct result of aging or overexposure to noise. Odds are better than one in ten that you or someone you know could easily benefit from a hearing instrument in avoiding the frustrations of hearing loss that hinder enjoying daily life. By choosing to have a hearing evaluation, you are taking the first step toward reconnecting with the world around you. If your evaluation results indicate that you have a hearing loss hearing aids may be recommended to you based upon the severity of loss. It’s important that you have the right expectations regarding wearing hearing aids. Hearing aids will give you better hearing, but they are not a cure for hearing loss. People whose expectations are too high – “I thought they would make my hearing normal” – are likely to be disappointed and may give up. Hearing Aids Can: • Help you hear and understand better in most situations • Allow you to participate more in group situations and meetings Hearing Aids Cannot: • Give you normal hearing Hearing Aids May Not: • Block ALL background noises, especially in noisy groups (even people without hearing loss hear background noise) • Let you hear very soft sounds Unlike eyeglasses, which correct your vision as soon as you first put them on, hearing aids need some time for proper adjustment. It may take several weeks or months to completely adjust to your hearing aids, so try not to get impatient.
