The Omron SEM-2 automatic blood pressure monitor uses oscillometric method of blood pressaure measurement. This means the monitor detects your bloods movement through your brachial artery and converts the movements into a digital reading. An oscillometric monitor does not need a stethoscope so the monitor is easy to use.
Average function Omron SEM-2 displays the average of up to last 3 readings taken within 10 minutes from recent measurement, i.e. If 2 or 3 readings are taken within 10 minutes, the respective average of last 2 or 3 readings are displayed. If only 1 reading is taken within 10 minutes, this reading would be displayed as the average value. This feature enables the user to track any variation within a short time interval.
Easy measurement for special conditions If the systolic pressure is known to be more than 220 mmHg, press and hold START/STOP button until the arm cuff inflates 30 to 40 mmHg higher than the suspected systolic pressure.
How to avoid incorrect blood pressure measurement ? 1. Avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Also rest for at least 15 minutes before taking your first reading. 2. Stress raises blood pressure. Avoid taking measurements during stressful times. 3. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your left upper arm 4. Measurement should be taken in a quiet place and you should be in relaxed, seated position. 5. Rest your left arm on the arm of a chair or on table so that the cuff is at the same level as your heart. Remain still and do not talk during the measurement. 6. Do not take a measurement after bathing, alcohol or exercise.
WHO Blood Pressure Classification The World Health Organization (WHO)/ International Society of Hypertention (ISH) developed the following Blood Pressure Classification, to be used as a general guidline only. Systolic (mmHg)
Diastolic (mmHg)
Optimal
less than 120
less than 80
Normal
120 to 129
80 to 84
High-Normal
130 to 139
85 to 89
Grade 1 hypertension (mild)
140 to 159
90 to 99
Grade 2 hypertension (moderate) Grade 3 hypertension (severe)
160 to 179
100 to 109
more than 180
more than 110
There is no universally accepted definition of hypotension (low blood pressure), but a systolic pressure below 99 mmHg is usually regarded as hypotension.
