Ryan O’Cain Ms. Wilson English II 3/27/19 Instructions: 1. Write a well-constructed SPEPES paragraph in response to the prompt below. You must CITE EVIDENCE from the text to support your response. Be sure to include the title(s) and author(s) in your answer. You may use your annotations. Prompt: So far in Persepolis, we have seen how Marjane, her family, and the people of Iran have been affected by the Iranian Cultural Revolution, the Iraqi invasion of Iran, and other social influences and experiences. In the text, how do social influences and experiences shape the protagonist's attitude towards herself? (Type your response in the space below).

In Persepolis, societal influences such as the death of Anoosh and the difference in social classes caused Marjane to question her faith in God and to see the flaws in the Iranian government. After her uncle Anoosh was executed as a Russian spy, Marjane yells at God, “Shut up you! Get out of my life! I never want to see you again!”. This shows how after Anoosh was executed, Marjane was extremely upset, causing her to lose her faith in God. After hearing stories from her favorite author about young children forced to work due to poverty, Marjane states, “The reason for my shame and for the revolution is the same: the difference between social classes.” This shows how Marjane feels bad that her family can afford things many families in Iraq couldn’t, and how she thinks the economic system of social classes is not fair for the lower class. This causes her to be ashamed that she doesn’t have to do what the lower class does to survive. Overall, after losing her uncle Anoosh and being exposed to the separation between social classes, Marjane loses her faith in God and feels ashamed about the unequal opportunities between social classes.
