Amanda Juzwick Ms. Wilson English II March 27, 2019 Instructions: 1. Write a well-constructed SPEPES paragraph in response to the prompt below. You must CITE EVIDENCE from the text to support your response. Be sure to include the title(s) and author(s) in your answer. You may use your annotations. Prompt: So far in Persepolis, we have seen how Marjane, her family, and the people of Iran have been affected by the Iranian Cultural Revolution, the Iraqi invasion of Iran, and other social influences and experiences. In the text, how do social influences and experiences shape the protagonist's attitude towards herself? (Type your response in the space below). In Persepolis, the corruption of the government experienced by Marjane shaped her attitude about herself, because she was forced to mature. Her Uncle Anoosh stated, “ I have a doctorate in Marxism-Leninism….” and Marjane responded with “Dialectic Materialism?” (59). This shows that Marjane had to adapt and learn more about government (causing her to mature quickly) because the influences around her were changing with the war. In the text, Marjane also states “Dad! Do you remember what you learned during your military service? Are you going to war? Are you going to fight? We have to teach those Iraqis a lesson!” (81). This quote shows that Marjane has developed knowledge of what happens within the government, and for men, when war starts. This further proves that Marjane has matured and learned more about the world because of the corrupt government she lives with. Overall, Marjane's attitude about herself became more mature due to the fact that her government she grew up with was corrupt.
