[Your Name] Ms. Wilson English II [Date] Instructions: 1. Write a well-constructed SPEPES paragraph in response to the prompt below. You must CITE EVIDENCE from the text to support your response. Be sure to include the title(s) and author(s) in your answer. You may use your annotations. Prompt: So far in Persepolis, we have seen how Marjane, her family, and the people of Iran have been affected by the Iranian Cultural Revolution, the Iraqi invasion of Iran, and other social influences and experiences. In the text, how do social influences and experiences shape the protagonist's attitude towards herself? (Type your response in the space below). In Persepolis, the speakers lack of ability to go further their education leads to a sense of defeat and helplessness. For example, on page 73 while laying in bed and thinking she says “No more university, and I wanted to study chemistry” and “I wanted to be an educated, liberated woman”. This shows that the author had goals and hopes for the future, and was working towards them. Later, while thinking alone again, the speaker says “and so another dream went up in smoke”. The speaker saying this is a giveaway that she has given up on her dream to become a chemist and doesn’t feel like there is anything that she can do to achieve her goals. In the end, Marjane's thoughts and monologues show that she feels defeated and powerless to fix her situation.
