BLUFF POINT ROUND 10 @ NABAWA 20th December 2008 Chapman Valley 5 for 254 (B McCashney 105 no, R Attrill 41, J McKay 29) Northampton 93 (P Sorgiovanni 2 for 1, C King 2 for 21, S Smart 2 for 21) Another day in paradise at the Valley! Stand in skipper, Frieds lost the toss and was asked to field by Bluff Point. An embarrassment of players and an embarrassment in selection led to us having 13 players turn up on the day. As punishment for losing the toss Frieds was elected non playing skipper (Mainly because of his electrifying pace in the field!) We welcomed Richard Bailey in his debut game for the Valley! A somewhat pedestrian start by the Pointers saw them amble to 18 before a Kingy (2 for 21) yorker cleaned up their opener and we were on our way. Wickets fell at regular intervals and the Pointers were eventually dismissed for 93! The fielding for the Valley was as unpredictable as we swung from clown like fumbling and stumbling to some fine pieces of cricket! Bails took a great catch (chest mark) at slip to give Kingy his second wicket! Rat, much to everybody’s surprise, threw the ball more than 30 metres (and straight!) to run out their opener at the bowler’s end. Kingy took a magnificent running and diving catch of Smarty’s (2 for 21) bowling as well as producing a great chase and throw from deep long on for a run out! BUT!!!!! The highlight of the fielding innings and a great example of his commitment to the team was Fried’s willingness to stop the ball with his crown jewels at mid off! Why is it that this seems sooooooo funny to everybody but the person who is hit? The only thing funnier was the fact that after a 5 minute rub ‘em , count ‘em and rest ‘em break the batsman proceeded to drive the next ball past Frieds! Discretion won out and his chase was called off after 3 paces! I may add that it does nothing for your confidence when in your moment of pain you turn around only to see most of your own team mates rolling on the ground laughing! Higgo bowled his doodlers into the breeze and was unlucky not to pick up a few wickets. Bails (1 for 6) grabbed a scalp on debut and Sorge (2 for 1) (Ssssssh …. I’m hunting wabbits!) cleaned up the tail! Rat (41) and Brock (105 no) opened the batting and in aggressive style grabbed a partnership of 76 in 14 overs! At one stage it looked like Rat was putting on a clinic with a series of pretty straight drives. A group of smaller partnerships took us to 4 for 141 in 28 overs. This heralded the entry of John (The Flash) McKay (29) to the playing field. Some deft touch, some thundering drives, some lightning singles, some huffing and puffing and some exhaustion saw Macca put on 73 with Brock for the 5th wicket. Brock again batted with great patience and style to notch up another century, his third in 5 weeks! Sorge (19no) batted sensibly at the end to ensure that Brock reached this milestone. It was noted by one of the spectators that we have a great team attitude at the Valley with everybody pitching in and things “just being done” without having to be asked. It’s great that these things are noticeable to others! The afternoon teas were awesome with special mention to Rat for the crayfish sandwiches at the end of play! If we could only stop Choggy and Al Headland from sounding like the Odd Couple in the canteen everything would be perfect! Keep up the great work! 10 in a row!
