CHAPMAN VALLEY CRICKET CLUB V

SPORTSMANS’ CLUB ROUND 5 @ WONTHELLA OVAL 15th November 2008 Sportsmans 178 (M Friday 3 for 36, C King 2 for 25, P Sorgiovanni 2 for 54) Chapman Valley 8 for 180 (P Sorgiovanni 68 no, D Sorgiovanni 35) Playing in town for the first time made no difference to Mr Lucky Houston as again we lost the toss. This time we were asked to bowl on a Wonthella oval that looked great. A great Kingy (2 for 25) incutter gave the Valley an early wicket and some tight bowling had Sportmans at 16 runs after 11 overs. Some lusty hitting saw them race to 45 from 15 before Senior Sorge (2 for 54) took a wicket in his first over to have Sporties at 2 for 42 at drinks. The drinks break did nothing to slate their search for runs and some good partnerships saw them at 4 for 129 with the prospect of a large total. Tex (1 for 33) again bowled well and with Frieds (3 for 36) spinning away at one end the run rate slowed and eventually a reasonable but not exceptional total of 178 was posted. Justin Collins took a very well judged catch off a high, swirling ball and generally the fielding was good. Rat and Umpire, Silver Connolly seem to have reached a low point in their relationship but; like an old married couple were soon all over each other again and can’t remember what they were grumpy about! In search of victory the openers again failed to dominate with Ninge (8) and Frieds (10) both falling to shots they’d rather forget. Higgo (14) and Junior (35) put together a 48 run partnership. A dreadful mix-up (Is it no? Is it go? Is it no go? Oh, no!), which saw Higgo falling short of his ground ended the Higgo and Senior (68no) partnership! Luckily, Higgo took the disaster in his stride! He and Sorge have also made up! (We may need to employ a therapist!). A series of small but significant partnerships saw the score creep up to 7 for 124 before Tex and Sorge put on 30 for the 8th wicket! Enter JC (8no) with the Valley needing 25 runs from 25 deliveries! His first time at bat for the Valley saw him combine well with Sorge. Some enterprising running and a dreadful dropped caught and bowled saw the Valley snatch victory with 1 delivery to spare! Sorge was so happy he’s given JC his sister! This was a fabulous victory and has given us a bit of breathing space at the top of the table. Well done to all involved. It was again great to see the Sorgiovanni Army at the game again as well as some of our other stalwarts in Bernie Knight and Wooly Grey. Next week we travel to Dongara.

Congratulations to the award winner. THE AUSTRALIAN PREMIER SEAFOOD AWARD – Phil Sorgiovanni
