FREEFORM MODELLING AND RENDERING W/ ALIAS STUDIO
2009 - Mario R Siqueira & Brunel University
DM2301 GRAPHICS COMMUNICATION
synopsys For the first DM2301 assignment - Pro/ Engineer solid modelling - the Logitech PlayGear Amp speaker-set was chosen as the object of modelling. For this second assignment - modelling and rendering with Alias - the same speaker-set was chosen. Original picture of the Logitech PlayGear Amp. image from gamezone.com
This allows a more direct comparison between the two different approaches to CAD/modelling.
Modelled in Pro/E and rendered in Bunkspeed Hypershot
Using the paint feature, a logotype was added to the center of the body of the speakers It was also created a virtual photoshoot set with a curve edge

final rendering
Rendering against a white backdrop and using 2 spotlights
The initial curves for this model were created in Adobe Illustrator and then imported to Alias Studio 2008. This speaker-set has two symetrical speakers attached to the body. The whole structure is held by a metal arch.
The back half of the speaker was created using a equivalent procedure using the skin, planar and tube flange tools.
Three curves were used to create the front half of the speaker. They were piled on top of each other and the skin tool was used to create the surfaces that unite them.
The top face was created using the planar tool. Following that, the tube flange tool was used to create inner round edge around the the openings.
Using a Z-Revolve on a pre-created curve, it was generated the chrome speaker-unit. Four of these units are use in this model.
At these point the first rendering tests were attempt and a stage was created using curve tool and skin. A spot light was used.
Toruses were created to simulate the rubber perimeter around the speaker units (4x).
(assembly continues ...)
Again using the same technique used to create the speaker plastic enclosure, the body enclosure was created using the pre-created curves, skin and planar.h
The missing bottom part of the body enclosure was created using two symetrical curves and the skinned and finally the end covered using planar. A circle was added, parallel to those curves.
Another 2 tube flanges were added, this time to the front panel of the body enclosure. The speaker was duplicated and the assembly continues.
At this point, the circle created in the previous step is extruded around a path to create the metal support for the speaker-set.
Three shaders were used in this model. A chrome shader with a sky reflecting map for the metal support and for each one of the speaker units. A deep black glossy plastic shader for the enclosing case. And finally a rubber shader for the torus around each speaker-unit. The environment is set to sky to provide the necessary reflection for the chrome features. The light sources are all the same and have intensity of 30, spotlight type, and cast soft shadows.
Two light sources were used for all the renderings exceept for the rendeing in this page which used a thrid spot-light focused onthe detail on the left side of the speaker set.
