CHAPTER 6 “Um… Dad? You actually want me to believe in vampires?” I asked politely. I could have said something like, ‘Yeah, and I’m a witch’ or ‘LIKE HELL I’M GOING TO BELIEVE THAT!’ or ‘Geez, you’re such a liar!’ But no. I was too weakhearted to say all of things above except the first one. I looked at the Cullens. I couldn’t tell what they were thinking. Wait—Bella looked like as if she was going to laugh any moment. Why would she laugh after she was suspected as a vampire? She was either crazy or….

“So you don’t believe in vampire when almost all the accidents in the world are done by them,” Robert snorted as if he was talking to a bean-headed duck. I mean, I was his daughter, and he was behaving like a street-gang. Bella hissed but Jasper glanced at her, shaking his head. Bella looked at him, and slowly her face turned soft. Bella sighed quietly. She looked calm down, but she didn’t look happy. “Dear, it’s not time to attack,” Edward said, sound annoyed by something—probably my dad. “If we attack now, he’s defiantly going to blame us, although he was the one who insult us in the first place.” There was some bitterness in his voice as if he just ate some ants right now. Robert rolled his eyes. “Geez, obviously. You creatures shouldn’t be alive, it’s against the nature, and that’s why—” he looked at the Cullens deadly, it was super scary although the Cullens didn’t even flinch “—I hunt them.” “Hunt vampires.” Alice snorted lightly. Robert shot a glance. “You want to test out if I can hunt one or not?”

“If you try, you’ll be dead in one second,” Jasper growled, suddenly in front of Alice. I couldn’t breath; I couldn’t spin my brain fast enough. I had no idea what the hell was going on. But I knew something—everyone in this room believed in vampires. Everyone in this room—except me. “That—that’s crazy,” I muttered like a crazy person. I couldn’t see anything. I was so confused. “Kelsey, you’ve got to believe this—there are vampires in this world and they are them too,” Robert growled. I stared at my dad. “But…” I couldn’t say anything. I couldn’t say anything. “No buts. I know how vampires look like—beautiful, pale and with burgundy eyes.” I understood one word: burgundy. “Wait—but the Cullens don’t have burgundy eyes, they have—” but I didn’t get to finish my sentence; Robert interrupted. “Yes, they all have gold eyes. Don’t you think that’s weird—the adapted family having the same eye color? All of

the children of yours here—” he looked around; sounding disgusted “—are adapted, as I heard?” I realized that he was talking to Carlisle and Esme now, not to me. Carlisle looked uneasy, but Esme looked furious. She looked like a mother snake protecting her eggs. “What if they are? You’re not going to hurt them or touch them in anyway as long I exist,” Esme hissed. I was surprised to see Esme so angry. She was a type who looked like she would smile forever. Robert snorted, “Yeah, we’ll see about that.” He stared at the Cullens one by one as if he was picking food, deciding which one he would eat first. “Dad, please… don’t be so mean to the Cullens,” I pleased. I didn’t want to be so mean to the Cullens. They were nice to me when I wasn’t. No one was kind to her before. Robert’s eyes went off from them to me. He stared at me as if I said something that would end the world. “Kelsey, please. Let me explain.”

4

“No, don’t let him explain,” Carlisle murmured, sounding worried. Alice seemed to understand—actually, all the Cullens seemed to understand what he meant, except Nessie. Her face wasn’t showing any feelings. It was just like… a stone. Edward growled unwillingly, but Emmett yowled as if he was playing a baseball. “Let me explain to you, Kelsey, what kind of creatures vampires are. Usually when people think of vampires, they think of black cloaked, red-eyed, turning-into-a-bat creatures. But no,” –he glanced at the Cullens— “They live among us—pretending to be human.” I would have snorted if the situation wasn’t like this. I was frozen like Nessie was—not understanding what Robert was saying. “You see, they do normally have burgundy eyes, but they don’t. Vampires do drink blood, of course, that’s one of the reasons why vampires live among humans when they over-power us.”

5

“Not exactly,” Jacob murmured under his breath, but Robert decided to ignore it. “But—but,” I muttered, wanting to scream at my father, “if the Cullens are actually vampires, which is impossible,” I ignored Robert’s stiff expression, “why didn’t they kill me already and drank my blood?” “Easy, they told us the answer already. They live by animals’ blood.” Robert answered so easily. Grr, I had to find something harder so Robert would end this stupid conversation. “You told me when I was young that vampires have no hearts. Then why can I hear Nessie’s heartbeats?” I demanded. Robert hesitated. His eyes went back to the Cullens— well, to Nessie. Nessie’s face was still as stone. She seemed not to care about Robert’s stiff gaze. But Jacob apparently did. He stood between them and started to growl. “What are you?” Robert asked. Urg, he was being ruder and ruder every time!

6

Nessie looked at Edward first, then Carlisle. They both nodded as if Nessie just showed them something and answering her. “There’s no point of lying, Nessie. We should try not to lie now.” Carlisle said sadly. Bella looked sickly worried when Nessie took a step forward and stared at Robert in the eyes. Robert looked worried too. “What now—” but his sentence stopped as if something was in his throat. There was a long silence. Robert was just staring the emptiness in the air, as if he was watching a movie. After a long silence, Robert flinched and blinked. Then he started to glare at Nessie with hatred. “You want me to believe that, leech?” Robert snarled. Nessie said with her flat voice. “Half, I told you. Half vampire and half human.” Huh? Now what did Nessie say? Half-human…and half…what?

I started to laugh half-heartedly. They were making fun of me, I thought to myself. Yes that was it—they were making fun of me. If I say they were right, they would just laugh at me and get over with it. Okay, then. I’ll admit that the Cullens were vampires. They would end this joke then. “Okay, then. I believe you—let’s say you guys are the vampires.” I said coolly. Everyone looked at me as if I was a mad snake who just said something about suicide. “You rather take it coolly.” Jasper frowned. I was so surprised because of two things. First, I was so surprised that Jasper was joking. And Jasper was the last person I expected to see joking. Second thing was the door knocking. Someone knocked on the door and I jumped. I wasn’t expecting anyone, so the door-knocking sounded really scary. Carlisle disappeared and appeared in the doorway. I blinked, having no time to be surprised. Carlisle opened the door and narrowed his eyes as he saw who was in the door.

8

Jacob frowned as he saw the people too. Then he murmured, “What are you doing here, Seth?”
