History of Tarumanegara

The history of the Tarumanegara kingdom is a Hindu kingdom that stood after the Kutai kingdom, namely in the 4th century to the 7th century AD The ruling kingdom in the western part of Java originated from the words Tarum and Nagara. Tarum means the river that divides West Java which is now the river Citarum and Nagara means the Kingdom or State. The establishment of the Tarumanegara kingdom is still being debated by experts. However, according to the Wangsakerta manuscript, in the 4th century AD there were a number of refugees from India who fled to the island and some parts of the archipelago to seek refuge. They fled to the archipelago because there was a great war in India, namely the Palawa and Calankayana kingdoms that opposed the Samudragupta Kingdom.

Tarumanegara Kingdom History Most of the refugees came from the Palawa and Calankayana kingdoms, those who lost the war. One of the Calankayana refugee groups led by Jayasingawarman who is none other than Maharesi. Then Jayasingawarman opened a new settlement near the Citarum River which was named Tarumadesya or Taruma Village. Stepping on ten years, many residents came to Taruma Village so that it developed into a large village which eventually became a city (Nagara). The more rapid development of the city of Taruma, Jayasingawarman formed a Kingdom called Tarumanegara in 358.

The glory of the Kingdom of Tarumanegara The kingdom of Tarumanegara which experienced the reign of the kingdom as much as 12 times had reached the height of its glory during the reign of King Purnawarman (395-434 AD). Purnawarman was the third king in power after Dharmayawarman (382-395 AD). During the time of King Purnawarman, the Kingdom of Tarumanegara expanded its territory by conquering several kingdoms around it. The glory of King Purnawarman is also written on the Ciaruteun inscription which contains, "This is (secondhand) two feet, which like Lord Wisnu's feet is the foot of His Holiness Sang Purnawarman, king of the land of Taruma, a brave king in the world".

The collapse of the Tarumanegara Kingdom The collapse of the Tarumanegara kingdom due to the transfer of power, namely from the 12th King Linggawarman to his son-in-law, Tarusbawa. In the government of Tarusbawa, the center of the Tarumanegara Kingdom was transferred to its own kingdom, namely the Kingdom of Sunda (subordinate of Tarumanegara) which in the end the Kingdom of Tarumanegara was replaced with the name of the Kingdom of Sunda. Thus about the History of the Tarumanegara Kingdom which included the establishment of the kingdom, the period of glory and collapse, and the king who ruled the Kingdom of Tarumanegara.
