Stephanus Meyer PORTFOLIO DE AUTOR

Township Portraits

Data of the Author

The legacy of apartheid left this inheritance behind , townships, the ghettos of the social marginalization of the non-white people that learnt to live, coexist and survive in the worst imaginable conditions. Today little has changed, juvenile gangs dominate, and they traffic with alcohol, drugs and firearms. AIDS spreads faster and faster, hygiene, sanitation, even drinkable water is a luxury that very few have the option of opting for. However, only a few kilometres from these areas life in the South African cities beats comfortably away, with its large houses, wide streets, modern shopping centers, leisure areas , hospitals, etc....

Born British in Zambia to a Spanish mother and a South African father in 1964 when it was still a British colony. In 1969 he moved to South Africa where he stayed until the age of 19. In 1983 he came to live in Spain. He started out in photography at a very early age, since then he sees and lives life through the lens of his camera. He is a member of AFOCO (Photographic Association of Córdoba / Spain) He took his first pictures when he was 16, self-taught and obsessed with light he has tried to capture it in all his photos, be it portraits, landscapes or nature shots. In the past he worked exclusively in black and white searching for strong contrasts but now with the change to digital he experiments with colour in all its aspects, filtering, retouching and making photomontages.

TEXTOS EN INGLÉS where

The townships are big stains inequality reigns , they are simply there and the government does very little to change this unfortunate situation. The shacks grow at a frantic rate , the housing promised by the government not so.
