Monica Molina Ms. Granja Speech Oct 16, 2018.
Topic:
How plastic is damaging planet earth
General purpose: Specific purpose:
To persuade. To persuade my audience about the effects of plastic that the
world it’s facing and the actions that we can do to make a change. Central Idea:
The effects of plastic that the world is facing are divided in long-
term effects, and short-term effects and the solutions of plastic pollution are the ones that start as individuals and from companies, so they can help with this movement. Introduction I. What is plastic? II. Why is plastic so bad? A. Plastic can take up to 1000 years to break down, and it also has the potential to leak harmful pollutants into the soil. III. Plastic is one of the major toxic pollutants today. IV. With more than eight million tones going into the oceans every year, it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish by 2050. A. It is thought the sea now contains some 51 trillion microplastic particles – 500 times more than stars in our galaxy. V. To sea turtles, plastic bags in the water can look like jellyfish, floating on the surface plastic can appear to be a tasty snack VI. Killing off sea creatures is bad for humans because we consume so much of it ourselves. (Transition: First, let's take a look at the effects that plastic is causing in the world) Body I. The effects of plastic on planet earth.
A. It arrives when we no longer want it; this happens especially with the disposable plastic of packing and packaging. There are some major long-term effects of plastic pollution. 1. Upsets the Food Chain 2. Groundwater pollution 3. Land and air pollution B. There are some major short-term effects of plastic pollution 1. There is a section of the Pacific Ocean where ocean currents meet, creating a vortex where a high concentration of debris form land and ships are accumulating. 2. Plastic does not biodegrade, and the problem is that it can split itself into smaller and smaller that right now are diffusing through the ocean. 3. Plastic is causing death in many sea species. C. We currently recover only 5% of the plastics we use 1. What happens to the rest of it? a. 50% is buried in landfills b. Some are remade into durable goods c. Much of it remains “unaccounted for.” (Transition: Even though the effects that plastic is causing in the world are huge, there is still something we can do to minimize the damage) II.
Solutions to plastic pollution. A. This problem can be only addressed by individuals and companies. 1. Shop Friendly 2. Get rid of bottled water 3. Educate Businesses 4. Recycle everything (Transition: Having talked about how in these years plastic is such a huge problem on our planet.) I.
Conclusion In conclusion, we can say that even though we are facing a global problem, we
are the only ones who can make a difference and create awareness. II. While plastic pollution is a very serious problem there are solutions to minimize the damage, we have done so far.
III.
It is a fact that ocean pollution has its origin in the behavior of humans. Through
the food chain, it will come back to us eventually. IV. The quantities of plastics entering the oceans are still largely unknown, and methods need to be developed to measure and to limit that input.
