Amelia Ria Canlas and Rebecca Ofelia Jarvis 8 – Fleming INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background of the Study The plant Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) has been known for having an ample of calcium and magnesium. It helps in preventing both calcium deficiency and magnesium deficiency. It is believed that it was originated from the tropical part of Africa and natural to West Africa (Purseglove, 1984; Tindall, 1983). Okra belongs to the family of Malvaceae. It is an annual herb and vegetable crop and as we know it, Okra is used in dishes especially in Filipino ones. The growth of Okra depends on its area; whether it’s at a shaded place or not, whether it gets a great amount of sunshine or not, or just outside your house. This research reports the findings of an Okra plant whether it should be placed on an area which can shade it from the sun, or not. Emphasis is needed in this research as we would like to know the effect of the okra plants with its different areas in the same amount of seeds, the same amount of soil and got the same amount of water daily. As we, the partners, would know the results of this research, we need to observe the plants carefully as possible. Not changing anything with the variables intended to use. We read news and facts about the Abelmoschus esculentus in our free time since this is part of the research. To assist with the okra plants that we assumed that the results were the same, we separated the plants. One plant will be at a partner’s house – shaded. And the other one at the other partner’s house – exposed. Through communicating with phones and new technology, we did the same routine every day at the same time of the day. Water the plant, remove weeds from the plant, water the plant once again.

1.2. Statement of the Problem In our section, each pair conducted an activity where we would plant Okra seeds into different black bags, and then put into two different situations; shaded and exposed. Based on some of our researching done, there are four primary factors that affect plant growth which are light, water, temperature and nutrients. These four elements affect the plant's growth hormones, making the plant grow more quickly or more slowly. Changing any of the four can cause the plant stress which stunts or changes growth or improves growth. Therefore, we can somewhat assume that the measurements of those leaves that were exposed were bigger and healthier (more vibrant) than those leaves which were shaded. The leaves of the plants that were exposed are receiving a greater amount of nutrients and a better amount of sunlight. While with the leaves of the plants that are shaded are getting less nutrients as well as sunlight and others compared to those which are exposed. By doing some research and conducting our study, we are trying to determine whether putting or planting and growing plants would be better for their overall growth and health in the two different situations, the shaded place or the exposed place.

1.3. Significance of the Study 

Study the Abelmoschus esculentus in different angles.

Determine if okra plants should be placed in a shaded area or not.

Identify the factors that are affected when placed in a certain area.

Suggest ways to plant the Abelmoschus esculentus to the framers.

Determine how the involvement of water takes place in planting the okra

1.4.Scope and Limitations In our pair, we conducted our study where we would plant Okra seeds into different black bags, and then put into two different situations; shaded and exposed, on Sunday (February 3, 2019). While doing our study we did a little research about the activity and we got some information regarding the variables and factors that affect plants growth, which are light, water, temperature and nutrients. These four elements affect the plant's growth hormones, making the plant grow more quickly or more slowly. Changing any of the four can cause the plant stress which stunts or changes growth or improves growth. Therefore, we can somewhat assume that the plants that were exposed were bigger and healthier than those leaves which were shaded. The leaves of the plants that were exposed are receiving a greater amount of nutrients and a better amount of sunlight. While with the leaves of the plants that are shaded are getting less nutrients as well as sunlight and others compared to those which are exposed. So, by conducting our study we can prove whether our research is right or wrong as well as coming up and discovering other information that were not mentioned in our past references. Some limitations to our study were time and environment. We needed to have enough time to determine whether the plant will grow in the two different situations and scenarios. Environment was also a worry for needed to have the right amount of everything that could affect our planta growth otherwise our study could fail.
