Overview Practically, organizations are hard to see. We see the outcroppings, such as a tall building or a computer workstation or a friendly employee; but the whole organization cannot be seen easily; it is vague and abstract and may be scattered along several locations. Yet we know organizations are there because they touch us everyday. Organizational Theory focuses primarily on structure and design aspects of organizations, although it also reflects on the relationship between structure and behaviour. Students should come to an understanding of the ways in which managers seek to promote organizational effectiveness through internal structures and processes. Students will analyze how organizations are structured within the context of the larger social, political, and economic environment; why systems of control and coordination vary across organizations and change over time; and how organizational theory may contribute towards improving the design and management of organizations.
Course Requirements and Pedagogy The course is aimed at 1st year students of management who have undergone a basic course in organizational behavior. The course requires an analytical ability to understand the concepts and a keen eye for observing how structures affect human behavior. The duration of the course will be 30 hours, with 20 sessions of 1.5 hours each. The sessions would comprise of Lectures, Case Discussions, Experiential Exercises and Project Work. Students are expected to read the assigned material before coming to class.
Evaluation Evaluation would be based on case analysis, presentations, assignments, and project study apart from quizzes, mid-term and end-term examinations. Evaluation scheme is as follows:
