The Markesian Deliberation Debate contest Stage I - Participating teams have to submit a write-up describing their opinion on the following situation: Doug was an undergraduate research assistant to his favourite professor Dr. Brown. Dr. Brown was an active member of the university, often busy conducting events, workshops and meetings at the national level with important and influential personnel from the industry. Doug, who had worked with Dr. Brown through two years, had been a diligent student and an ardent worker. With his zeal and focus, he had managed to virtually to take over the day care project from Dr. Brown. Doug was proud to have his research project reviewed by Dr. Brown who was exceedingly pleased with Doug's performance. Dr. Brown suggested a few changes and returned Doug's paper with his insights about his work. Doug duly incorporated the changes suggested and delivered it to Dr. Brown's office. In a few days, Doug was happy to receive a note from Dr. Brown that said “Well done. Thanks.” One day, in one of Doug's many sessions at the library, as he reviewed some literature, he came across an article written by Dr. Brown. As he glanced through the article, he thought it sounded familiar. As he read it more closely, it dawned on him that the article was indeed familiar; in fact, it was his very own article, published word by word under the name of Dr. Brown! With a growing feeling of unease, Doug realised that he had two options. One which would make him feel right, having stood up for what was right, proclaiming the truth to the world. Another, which would probably stand him in good stead with the professor and in time prove to be a more sensible stand. If he kept quiet about it, he would continue to be a favourite with the professor, who would put in a good word for him with his various friends in the industry and guarantee a good grade and comfortable placement. However, if he did decide to keep quiet about it, there would always be the unanswered question of whether he had been truthful; to himself and to the world. Doug pondered: about what he should do, about what his options were and what they meant to him. He was only a first year graduate student. Would anyone believe him? Would it matter to him if they did? Would he be able to answer his own voice if he didn't raise it now? What would you do?
