A LITTLE CRUISIN’ ACKNOWLEDGMENT… About four years ago, I met a very nice PT Cruiser couple Hollywood (Ken) and Vine (Barb) at a car show in the summer of 2005. Today they are both members of Rancho Cucamonga PT Cruiser Cruisin’ Club and PT Cruisers of Orange County. Their pride and joy, award winning 2005 PT Cruiser is rightfully named “Freedom Cruiser”, sometimes refers to as the “Christmas Tree Car”. It will light up the night with over a thousand individually installed multi-color LED’s. This PT Cruiser was on the front cover of the last and final issue of Cruiser Quarterly Magazine in 2008. The theme title was “Hollywood’s PT Lights Up The Night”. Their other car is a 1968 Ford Mustang Classic which looks super and has also been entered into many events and respectfully holds the honor of winning many trophies. The PT Cruiser and Mustang are on Hollywood’s website: www.freedomcruisin.com Hollywood (Ken) is known for taking many photos while attending various car shows and events and uploads fantastic photos to his website for all to see. Webmaster and designer of his website, the site has become a successful creation for which he is to be congratulated. It’s worthwhile to go there every day to see something new such as an online puzzle, picture of the day, car photo of the day, selected calendar events and more. The site is to a large extent a dedication to classic Mustangs, classic cars, muscle cars, street rods, and PT Cruisers. Club Cruiser enthusiasts along with many other car buffs will agree that Hollywood and Vine have contributed greatly to the PT Cruiser and classic car community by designing and creating www.freedomcruisin.com for all to see and enjoy. I for one visit the site several times during the week and enjoy the web site. Thanks to Hollywood for his dedication and effort in keeping the interest in cars going beyond the expense and time he has to put forth for us to enjoy, view and read about the many things that we enjoy so much. Courtesy Of Rancho Cucamonga Pt Cruiser Cruisin’ Club Comedian John Candy, who died during the making of this poorly received comic western, plays James Harlow, a 19th century wagon master who is heading back east with a wagon train full of oddball characters who have had their fill of Western life. They include ex-doctor Phil Taylor (Richard Lewis), kind-hearted prostitute Belle (Ellen Greene), and a bookseller, Julian (John C. McGinley). Harlow is a drunken, washed-up leader who frequently gets lost. The travelers eventually discover that he was a member of the famous Donner party, which resorted to cannibalism when stranded in the mountains. Railroad magnates try to turn back the party, figuring it's bad publicity for people out East to learn that the West is not really a paradise. The tycoons hire gunfighters and villains to stop the expedition, but local Indians protect the wagons, because they are glad to see disgruntled white settlers leaving their lands. This "backwards" western was based on a story by Jerry Abrahamson. ~ Michael Betzold. Running Time: 107 mins

Saturday May 09 2009 - USS Midway Aircraft Museum Cruise It has been a long time since we’ve taken a trip to San Diego, but after taking this cruise on May 9 th to the Midway Aircraft Museum in San Diego I can appreciate the pleasing mood traveling down the freeway. Since the beginning of the year we have taken a few trips to interesting places around Southern California and they have all been rewarding, but this one cruise to San Diego was a little different in that the weather was perfect, the mood was easy going, and the view was spectacular. The traffic was light and the hills were very clear, and on such a clear day as this one we could see the homes and large mansions on the side of the hills as we traveled. It seemed as though one was looking at a picture perfect post card with a blue background and different shades of green on the hillside. The rolling hills held many homes that I for one could only dream of living in. This time we met at Denny’s restaurant in Ontario 1 block north of the I-10. The distance to San Diego we knew would be a little long but as we traveled we picked up many fans checking out our nicely clean and great looking PT Cruisers on the way. Our group was of a standard size and after making conversation and exchanging a few tidbits since we last saw each other we headed off towards the freeway. Direction of travel, I-15 south, 163 south, 16B, I-5 north and exit on Hawthorn Street to Harbor Drive. Well needless to say I did pretty good leading the caravan of cruisers but missed the Hawthorn St. exit off the freeway and ended up going a couple of miles north on the I-5. I exit the I-5 made a left turn under the freeway and ended right smack in front of the USMC recruiting Depot. I definitely didn’t want to go in there again so I turned left, got back onto the I-5 and could see the Midway Aircraft Carrier Ship off to the right so I made an exit soon after that. After cruisin’ around (sightseeing) I pulled over and asked Mel and Myrna to guide me with their GPS to find the way. Myrna directed me via the 2-way radio and we easily found the entrance to our final destination. She was a life saver in giving me directions because I would have never found the way not knowing the San Diego area. Without Mel & Myrna’s help with their GPS I would have ended up at the border entranced. The area surrounding the Midway was packed with tourist and weekend visitors along with stop & go traffic. Needless to say as we drove up on Harbor Blvd looking for an entrance many people were checking out the PT Cruisers as if they had never seen one before. When we did finally enter the parking area and parked in the lot next to the Midway, as we walked to the Midway entrance we notice several tourist walking up to the pt’s and taking pictures of our PT Cruisers from different angles. I found it amusing that here we were next to a towering huge aircraft carrier and people are taking pictures of our cruisers. That was truly an honor for our club. I mentioned to Tommy about the tourists and he also noticed several people walking over to the pt’s and he jokingly suggested that we charge them a fee for admission. We had a great time visiting this great famous aircraft carrier, and we were surprised to see how big it was inside. As we walked into the middle deck it felt as if we were inside a huge building with very high ceilings and the length was about as large as a football field. Along with a gift store there were plenty of real live action simulators one can go on after a short instructional lesson on how to maneuver when inside the simulator module. One visitor must have been having a world war three inside a simulator module because he made the simulator go straight up, down, sideways left, right and upside down along with many turns rolling over from left to right. A little too much for me that’s for sure. We walked up to the top deck and viewed the planes and choppers on board and for sure the deck area is very long. There were many visitors in every deck of the ship but many were side by side along the edge of the ship’s deck watching many people below on their boats and yachts enjoying the day. Off to the other side of the harbor we could see two more aircraft carriers, one being the Ronald Regan and the other not sure of. There was also a helicopter flying at great speeds along the edge of the water with a small planes racing in between the huge tall pylons that look like highway cones. The pilot was giving everyone an air show and he was doing a great job in his performance. Actually I wondered when he was going to crash because that’s how dangerously close he got to the pylons in the water. He was good though. It was about mid afternoon when we left and again had to make our exit onto Harbor Blvd where many people were crossing and traffic was very heavy so it was stop and go once again. And once again we drew many crowds of people checking out the PT Cruiser’s so after stopping every few feet we started sounding our horns and many encouraged us to do it again. I think that’s the only time I have enjoyed being in heavy traffic. Overall the trip to San Diego was great and the Midway was something one has to see in person. The Coronado Bridge was off in the distance and the view was absolutely magnificent. What a great ship the Midway is! Barry & Debbie had given me a menu to a restaurant called Killarney’s, a restaurant & Irish Pub in Temecula, so we all agreed to drive over there and have lunch. While on the I-15 we called the restaurant and they gave us directions on how to get there. Never having been to this restaurant we had no idea about what they served. I must say that was the best Pub Chicken I have ever eaten, it was that good. Grilled chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms, bacon, Swiss cheese and Irish whiskey cream sauce. Everyone ordered different menu items but my second choice would have been what Myrna and Mel ordered, the Corned Beef & Cabbage - a tender corned beef brisket, with cabbage, carrots, boiled potatoes & Irish whiskey cream sauce. The service was great the atmosphere was cool and the entertainment was superior. Everyone enjoy their meal at Killarney’s and after talking and carrying on for about 2 ½ hours we left and cruise back home exchanging conversation via the 2-way radios. This was definitely a good cruise……until the next time!
