Sunday April 26 2009 Cruise To The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch This cruise was postponed from Sunday April 19 to April 26 due to the fact that on Saturday April 18 we cruised to the Veterans Parade in Riverside, Ca. and that would have been a little too much on some of the club members that live far, far away. I checked the weather report as I always do and it basically said that it was going to be a perfect April day at Carlsbad Ranch in Carlsbad, Ca. Our meeting place was in Ontario, Ca. and arriving there I saw many Cruisers ready for the cruise today. We waited a little bit for another cruising’ club member and then we left for our cruise. Maria & Myrna both have GPS devices installed in their cruisers so as we traveled we exchanged conversation about where to go. I had the directions from the Flower Fields which told me how to get there by only using the freeway system. Their GPS can be accessed to provide the shortest route or the fastest route to take but as we cruised by way of the I-15 South, CA-78 West, and then the I-5 south towards San Diego we reached our destination which was approximately a little under 115 miles one-way. We traveled about 230 miles. When we arrived we were in communication with our San Diego club members Hollywood & Vine (Ken & Barb) on the 2-way radios and they directed us where to turn and park upon exiting the I-5. We manage to stay together amongst all of the zillions of cars that were in the area, and luckily by accident we missed the entrance and turned into the shopping mall where the parking lot was completely full, but manage to find about 14 spaces empty at the rear of the shopping mall that put us in or about 600 feet from the Flower Field entrance. Talk about being lucky. A nice lady took many photos of the group while directing traffic both ways & holding our cameras. That lady had style, a great personality and very excited about this group. I had previously arranged this cruise and talked with the manager and asked if we could get a discount but since they are open only several months of the year they said the only discount we could get was $1.00. Our newest members Jim & Paula Anderson brought Paula’s mother Doris Kotwica and both Paula and Doris were in wheel chairs being assisted by Jim and Tommy Dorsey so the manager said they (all four) did not have to pay the admission fee. This again was another plus for this cruise. A little ways past the entrance they provide a tractor driven wagon ride for viewing the beauty of the Flower Fields. The wagon has a ramp for loading all of the guests, and enables the handicapped to enjoy the scenic ride. I was amazed at what I saw and just could not figure out which picture to take first with all of the colors surrounding us as we strolled through the fields. Continue  ~ P A G E

The flower grown here is the Tecolote Giant Ranunculus. Over 50 acres are devoted to raising the ranunculus bulb crop. The flowers die back and produce seed for replanting in these same fields for the next season. The goal is to harvest approximately 200,000 bulbs per acre, so that would mean they harvest about 6-8 million bulbs! The colors are amazing and almost anyone who has no training or practice with photography will get the best photos yet, even with the lowest price camera. The word color must have been discovered at the Flower Fields. It is a beautiful place. Hollywood & Vine suggested a Richie’s Diner in the city of Temecula so he called ahead and they reserved a very large back room for the group where we stayed about 2 ½ hours and highlighted the luncheon celebrating another one of the new member’s birthday Mel Dickey. Mel was clapping, cheering and going about with the celebration during lunch and really enjoying himself along with his wife Myrna. Happy Birthday Mel! So another cruise ended on April 26 2009 and another day past, and it just feels good to know that the day was spent with good people and ever lasting friendships that will always remain a good memory for all who were there. In summary this cruise was a great cruise and traveling down the highway watching all those people looking at how clean and beautiful our pride & joy PT Cruisers looked was worth getting up on this special day and making this trip to the Flower Fields at Carlsbad. Saturday April 18 2009 4 Annual Salute to Veterans Parade th

The morning of Saturday April 18 th was an early start for some of us, but knowing that we were going to be in the Parade in dedication to all American Veterans was a moving experience. The theme for the parade was “ A Salute to the Veterans Parade” we had to be there not only as a Cruisin’ Club but as individuals paying respect and honoring the American Veterans who have given so much for the United States of America. In setting up for this parade the club membership was thrilled about going and I myself did not know what to expect except for what one of our members from Desert Hot Springs had told me. Eddie Johnson was the only parade entry last year for the 3rd Annual Veterans Parade and he rode alone in his PT Cruiser on the parade route displaying his patriotism to all who were there. So this year for the 4th Annual Veterans Parade our Cruisin’ Club went to Riverside, Ca. and participated with the PT’s all decorated to the extreme with red, white, and blue colors. We showed everyone there who we were and I was leading with my Bad Dog Cruiser and the PT Cruiser Cruisin’ Trailer which we decorated to look like a float by covering up the wheels and the entire bottom of the trailer with decorations along with about 40 small flags and ribbons and other stuff. On top were full size flags of the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, MIA/ POW, and the highest flag being the American Flag was in the center of the float. We personally received a big Thank You from the Parades’ Chief Organizer and were welcomed as one of the very special PT Cruiser Cruisin’ Club by all who were there. The Armed Forces were in full attendance as well as many Police Departments from Southern California. This parade was spectacular and awesome for all who were there. The photos tell the whole story about the pride and dedication of those who were there as spectators and of the people who were very excited in being in the parade. Continue 

We not only had a great time at this parade being a planned cruise but we were treated to another cruise surprise after the parade when Maria and Mike Savedra took us to a great restaurant to eat. This restaurant has so much see and like always I carry my camera which was a good thing on the cruise because this restaurant is like no other with all of the designs and creativity they have done at this location. I would say it is about 1 acre in size and every inch of this property is decorated with waterfalls, figurines, statues, walkways, and I mean the walkways are truly a work of art along with everything at this restaurant. The name of the restaurant is called Tio’s Taco and is located on Mission Ave & Chestnut Ave about 1 block west of Market Street in Riverside, Ca. The entire day was a memorable day and the Cruisin’ Club Member of the Month for April - Maria Savedra, once again really did surprise the cruisin’ club with a great restaurant where we stayed for about 2 1/2 hours, ate a delicious lunch, talked and visited the grounds with all of its creativity and artful scenery. The food truly was delicious and the friendly atmosphere was even better.

Originally called Decoration Day after the Civil War (1861-186), Memorial Day has been a day for Americans to remember those who lost their lives in service of their country. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the country was in disarray. Families and lives were torn apart because of all of the fighting and destruction that had occurred. It is believed that Memorial Day began when two civil War veterans saw a woman and her two children decorate the grave of a fallen soldier with flowers. The two veterans were so moved that they decided to decorate more graves with flowers. In 1868, General John A. Logan, commander-inchief of the Grand Army of the Republic, ordered that the 30th day of May be designated for the purpose of decorating graves of those Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. General James Garfield spoke at the first national observance of Memorial Day on May 30, 1868. For 100 years after that, Memorial Day was celebrated as a day for remembering U.S. men and women who had lost their lives or who were missing in all wars. The South refused to acknowledge Decorations Day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I. Then in 1968, Memorial Day was officially changed to the last Monday in May. That’s the way it has been ever since. This year, Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 25th. Memorial Day and Labor Day are bookend holidays, marking the beginning and end of the summer holidays in the United States. These three-day weekends traditionally are times for reflection, celebration, and family outings. As you make plans for your upcoming three-day weekend, take some time to reflect what it is we’re really celebrating, and honor the men and women that have fought (or are still fighting) for our freedom.
