Win Prizes for Best Bookmark in RPL’s Annual Children’s Contest It’s that time of year again, when we encourage the children of Rowan County to share their artistic talents by participating in the annual Children’s Bookmark Contest! Once again, the Friends of Rowan Public Library are sponsoring this exciting event. Entry forms for bookmarks will be available at the library, in schools, and online at www.rowanpubliclibrary.org beginning Monday, November 2. The contest concludes at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 20. Entry forms must be turned in to an RPL location by the deadline. Judges will award first, second, and third place prizes for each age group:

4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 year olds. The three first-prize winners will have their bookmarks professionally printed and distributed at all library locations. Winners will be notified in December and honored at a special meeting of the Friends that month. This year, the Literary Book Post and Chick-Fil-A have signed on to join the Friends of RPL in sponsoring this contest. They have generously donated prizes for the top three winners in each age category. For questions or more information, please call 704-216-8234.

“Telling Our Stories” Photo Exhibit A farmer with oxen at the end of the work day, a women’s basketball team in bloomers, a baby picture of former Secretary of State Thad Eure, and a tobacco festival queen bedecked in a gown of dried tobacco leaves are among the treasured photographs from the North Carolina State Archives traveling with the “Telling Our Stories” Photography Exhibit on display at Rowan Public Library this month. The exhibit presents some of the many ways the state’s stories can be told, showcasing the marvelous times, people, and places of North Carolina, and is organized by the NC Department of Cultural Resources. The exhibit will be at the Rowan Public Library through November

12 at the Headquarters location in Salisbury. It is free and open to the public. The photographs themselves explore a wide gambit of themes — landscapes and wildlife, presidents and farmers, spirituality and conflict, landmarks, and the human condition. Do not miss this one-ofa-kind portrayal of life in North Carolina.

Myths and Mysteries Please join us for a special “after hours” program on Thursday, November 12, at 7:00 p.m. in RPL’s Stanback Auditorium in Salisbury. Susan Waller, storyteller, will be regaling us with mysterious tales and weird happenings in Rowan County. Come and share our stories. Please enter using the Fisher St. door closest to Church St.

Rowan Public Library Foundation A Gift That Keeps on Giving @ RPL The Rowan Public Library Foundation was established in 1991 for the purpose of developing an endowment fund to support the improvement and expansion of public library resources and services for the benefit of the citizens of Rowan County. The Foundation encourages community investment through individual and corporate giving. Currently, the Foundation’s primary focus is to enhance the library’s collection of books and other resources for public use. There are now 137 named endowments, ranging from a minimum of $1,000 to over $100,000, which provide ongoing support for collection development. Endowments may be established in the name of the donor or in memory or in honor of someone. Please consider making a long term investment in your public library by establishing a named endowment through the Foundation. For information about setting up an endowment, please call Pam Nance at 704-216-8231.
