Research About the Visibility of the Moon of Rajab 1429 A.H. (3/4 June 2008) Thurs. 3rd July 2008: (Pakistan: 28 Jumadath-Thaniah * Saudi Arabia [No announcement of moon sighting made] * According to Ummul-Qura: 29th Jumadath-Thaniah). The birth of the Rajab 1429 A.H. crescent will take place on 3rd July 2008 at 2:18 UT/GMT. In Pakistan the time will be Thurs. 8:18 a.m. (UT+6) and in Saudi Arabia, Thurs. 5:18 a.m. The age of the crescent and other factors affecting its visibility (Lag, Rel.Azi and Elongation etc.) on this date i.e. Thurs. 3rd July 2008 will be extremely defective in Pakistan, Hindustan, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and in all the countries lying east of them. Thus the Astronomy Department of Jamiatur-Rasheed is of the opinion that in accordance with more than half a dozen old and new criteria of moon sighting including Al-Beruni, Yaqoob bin Tariq, Babylonians and the ancient Indian astronomers, there is no possibility at all of the crescent being sighted with the naked eye in Pakistan, Hindustan, Bangladesh, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and in the countries lying east to them i.e. China, Japan, Indonesia, Australia etc. on Thursday. Only and only Khalid Shaukat (America), founder of moonsighting.com and Odeh (Jordan), founder of ICOP, have expressed a possibility of the moon being sighted with the aid of a telescope in the entire region from Bangladesh to Saudi Arabia. But according to Bernard Yallop there is no possibility of sighting the crescent in these areas even with the aid of a telescope. On the other hand, according to nearly all the ancient and modern criteria of sighting the moon, there is a clear possibility of sighting the crescent on Thurs. 3rd July 2008 in the southern region of North America, entire Central America, Northern region of South America. The areas, according to all the ancient and modern criteria, where there is no possibility of the crescent being sighted are: 1.The northernmost region of North America. 2. Approximately half of the southern region of South America. 3. The northernmost region of Africa and nearly half of its southern region. 4. Entire Europe. 5. Entire Asia and 6. Australia and New Zealand. However, according to a number of criteria, there is a slight possibility of the crescent being sighted with the naked eye on Thurs. 3rd July 2008 in Morocco, Chad, Gabon, and in the countries lying between them in the African Continent. The probability of sighting the crescent further increases in Senegal and its neighboring areas. Yet, Dr Omar Afzal, Chairman of the Committee for Crescent Observation International, [an American committee of Astronomy established since 1978 and among whose members are Dr. S. K. Abdali, Dr. Monzur Ahmed, Dr. Rauf Imam, Charles Evans (Abu Bakr)] has expressed severe reservations about the possibility of the crescent being sighted anywhere in the world on 3rd July 2008 except the southern region of North America, Central America, Northern region of
South America. According to him sighting the crescent with the aid of a telescope even is not worth considering due to many technical reasons. Fri 4th July 2008: (Pakistan: 29th Jumadath-Thaniah. *Saudi Arabia: No announcement of moon sighting made *According to Ummul-Qura: 1st Rajab). According to all ancient and modern criteria, the crescent will be easily visible not only in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia but nearly in the whole world, (especially between 60 degrees northern and southern latitude) on Fri. 4th July 2008. Conditions of the crescent on Fri. 4th July 2008 in Karachi: According to Dr. Monzur Ahmed’s software, Mooncalculator6 the conditions of the crescent at sunset i.e. 8:25 p.m. (UT+6) on Fri. 4th July 2008 in Karachi will be as follows: Altitude = 16.3 degrees Rel. Azi. = -10.5 Elongation = 19.98 Age = 36 hrs. 7 min. Lag = 1 hr. 22 min. According to the details given above, it is extremely obvious that as there is a clear possibility of the crescent being visible not only in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan but in nearly the whole world, especially between 60 degrees northern and southern latitude, on Fri 4th July 2008, thus the 1st of Rajab is nearly certain to fall on Sat. 5th July 2008 in Pakistan, Hindustan, Bangladesh, Iran, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia etc. Here it is to be pointed out that as the conditions of the Rajab crescent will be extremely defective in these countries on Thurs. 3rd July ---- in Pakistan, for example, the age of the crescent will hardly be 12 hrs. and in Saudi Arabia hardly 14 hrs. ----- therefore, if a person claims to have sighted the moon on the evening of Thurs. 3rd July 2008, and if his claim is accepted without the verification and investigation of Ulama and astronomers then that will be an extremely surprising and incomprehensible decision. Muhammad Sultan Alam, Head of the research committee Astronomy Department of Jamia-tur-Rasheed Ahsanabad, Karachi, Pakistan 15-06-2008
