As the declination of the crescent has become very low, (e.g. the declination at sunset in Karachi i.e. at 19:51(UT+6) will merely be 2.021°) and furthermore as the other factors affecting its visibility e.g. Lag, Rel.Azi. and Elongation etc. st will be extremely defective on Sun. 31 Aug. 2008 in a major part of the inhabited world, especially in the northern hemisphere, (in Karachi e.g. the age of the crescent will merely be 17 hrs. 53 min. at the time of sunset), the Astronomy Department of Jamia’-turRasheed, in the light of the research of Al-Beruni, Yaqoob-bin-Tariq, Babylonians and the ancient Indians, as well as more than eighteen ancient and modern criteria of sighting the moon, predicts that there is no possibility of sighting the crescent with the naked eye in most part of the inhabited world including Pakistan, Hindustan, Bangladesh, Iran, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. According to nearly all the ancient and modern criteria there is a clear possibility of sighting the crescent with the naked eye only in the South American continent. Bernard Yallop (England), Khalid Shaukat (America), and Shaukat Odeh (Jordan), have predicted very slim chances of sighting the crescent in Central Africa and the southern-most areas of USA, e.g. Miami and Tampa. Dr.Omar Afzal, Chairman of the Committee for Crescent Observation International, [an American Institute of Astronomy established since 1978, among whose members are Dr. S. K. Abdali, Dr. Monzur Ahmed, Dr. Rauf Imam, Charles Evans (Abu Bakr)] has negated the possibility of sighting the crescent anywhere in the world except in the southern regions of South America i.e. in Panama, Brazil, Argentina, Chile etc. st th st Mon. 1 Sep. 2008: (*Pakistan: 29 Sha’ban. *Saudi Arabia: no announcement made. *According to Ummul-Qura: 1 Ramadha-nul-Mubarak 1429). st As the crescent will reach the Southern Hemisphere on 1 Sep. [e.g. its declination at sunset time in Karachi i.e. at 18:50 (UT+5) will be - 4.124 °] therefore there are clear chances of sighting it in New Zealand, Australia, Africa and South America. However in the Northern Hemisphere, there is a clear possibility of moon’s appearance only in these regions: 1) Asia up to 40º Northern Latitude, 2) Europe ………….about 45º Latitude, 3) North America ………… 50° Latitude. However, in areas situated along latitudes beyond these, there is no possibility of sighting the crescent with the naked eye, though it will be more than 40 hrs. Old. Conditions of the Crescent in Karachi: According to Dr. Monzur Ahmad’s software, Mooncalculator6.0, the conditions of the crescent in Karachi on st Mon. 1 Sep. 2008 at the time of sunset, i.e. at 18:50, will be as follows: Altitude: 10.1 Rel. Azi. = -18.6 Elongation = 21.5 Age = 41 hrs. 52 min. Lag. = 49 min. In the light of the details given above it is extremely clear that as there is a possibility of sighting the crescent st st very clearly on Mon. 1 Sep. 2008 in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan etc. the 1 of Ramadha-nul-Mubarak is approximately sure to fall on nd Tues. 2 Sep. 2008. th It is to be noted here that as the birth of the crescent will take place on Sat. 30 Aug. 2008 after sunset in Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe, and furthermore as the age of the crescent, in North and South America will only be of a few hours and the other factors will be extremely defective and, in addition to it, as the crescent on that day will set before the sun in all the areas of the world except in the furthermost western areas of South America; similarly as the conditions of the crescent will be extremely st defective in a major part of the inhabited world, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, on Sun. 31 Aug. 2008, therefore if any th person who claims to have sighted the crescent with the naked eye on Sat. 30 Aug. 2008 in any part of the world or on the st evening of 31 Aug. in Pakistan, Hindustan, Bangladesh, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia etc. and if his claim is accepted without the verification and investigation of experts of Fiqh and Astronomy then that will be an extremely surprising and incomprehensible decision.
