Iota Xi Chapter Minutes March 12, 2009

1. Membership and Orientations •

Spring Induction: The Spring Induction was a success with a total induction of 70 new members. Officers and Current Members arrived at 4.30pm to set-up for orientation. New Members arrived at 6.45pm dressed elegantly. Our PTK President made an excellent speech as well as the former PTK President. Special thanks to Megan Andrade for making the Induction well-prepared

and an overall success. Also, thanks to the officers and members that helped make this induction a success. •

Springs Honors Luncheon: The Spring Honors Luncheon took place on March 7 from 12.30pm-2.30pm. The speaker for the Luncheon wasProfessor Shalan. He made a presentation on the Paradox of Affluence, which deals with the current state of the world, percentages relating to social economic status in countries and the percentages of how an individuals’ change in living can make a difference. Former PTK Members and Hudson Community College attended. Overall, it was a success with an excellent presentation and delicious food. Thanks for the PTK members who stayed afterwards to clean up.

Fundraising &Service Projects •

Spring Blood Drive: The blood drive was a success with 91 donors and 19 deferrals. The double red cell procedures were 19, which was more than last time. The whole blood donations were 53 products, which surpassed the 44 products from last year. Over 200 patients will be touched by the blood drive held at Union County College, which Phi Theta Kappa helped support. This drive will make a difference in each of the families that received a donation. Thanks for everyone that helped give blood for a good cause.



E-Cycling: E-cycling event will take place March 24th, 2009. The top 3 wireless devices to be recycled are cell phones, PDA, and handheld organizers. People interested in donating these wireless devices should put the items in the Cranford or Elizabeth Library. All proceeds go towards Relay for Life. We need PTK members to speak in their classes to advertise this event. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Chris or any other PTK officer.



Masquerade Ball: PTK plans to raise money through a Black and White Masquerade Ball in order to support the Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation. This event will take place on April 24th, 2009 in the Cranford Cafeteria from 6pm-11pm. The entrance fee will be around $10 for students, which includes food and drinks; the cost for couples will be $15. The theme of the dance will be Black and White, in which masquerade masks will be sold. Auctions include dinner for two, as well as auctioning off PTK members for dances. PTK has an objective of raising a minimum of $300. Committees for the Masquerade Ball are Food, Entertainment, Masquerade Masks, Advertising, Decoration, and Auction Committee. Joseph Eulo brought up the idea of sending out invitations for this event to make it more elegant. The deadline to register for the Masquerade Ball will be April 17th. Possible prices for masquerade masks are $50 for 50

masks, which can be ordered online or they can be hand-made. We need help looking for sponsors in which we they can donate food as well as finding faculty members who will be interested in helping out through the auction. This event will be advertised through flyers as well as the newsletter. The committee leader of this event is the PTK Secretary, Robert W. Fernandez. 3. Other PTK Chapter Events •

Hudson County Community College Blood Drive: The blood drive will take place on March 18th, 2009 at Jersey City, Hudson County Community College. Iota XI’s attendance in this event will be helpful towards our sister Chapter. Volunteers will meet at 11am in the student lounge. If one is unsure how to get there, they can take the PATH. Swingin’ Out of the Recession: The President of Raritan Valley Community College is hosting an American Cancer Society Fundraising Dance. Those who come must dress up as the era of the Great Depression. Free swing dance lessons are given. It will take place in the Raritan Valley Community College Cafeteria, Route 28 & Lamington Road, North Branch, NJ 08876. The dance

starts at 7pm until 10pm on March 20, 2009. The fee is $5.00 and drinks are $3.00. 4.

Upcoming Events/Reminders •

Earth Hour: Earth Hour will take place on March 28th, 2009. In order to help out the environment by conserving energy, please turn off all lights and electrical appliances from 8.30pm-9.30pm



Belmar Beach Clean-up: The beach clean-up at Belmar Beach will take place on Saturday, April 25th, 2009 from 10am to 2pm. At 10am, participants will meet up at Ocean Avenue and 16th St.



Video-game Tournament: The original date, May 15, 2009 for the video game tournament was declined due to final exams. New possible dates assigned were May 7th, 9th, and 14th. Team formations, sign-ups and prizes will be discussed during our next meeting after spring break.



Relay for Life: Relay for Life is an organization that raises money for cancer awareness. Spots are still available in order to PTK members to sign-up for the event on May 29, 2009. Only 13 people are needed for this great event. Those who volunteered contact Professor Stokes or Rachel Pribish in order for more information on the event as well as if there any remaining spots open. Relay for Life is also hosting a Relay Around the world, in which one picks a country they want to run for.

5. Miscellaneous



Earth Day Bags: A handout was passed which show the style of the PTK handbags for Earth Day.



Newsletter: A draft of the newsletter was passed around and pictures were the Regional Convention in which some of our officers attended.



Blog: Joseph Eulo brought up the suggestion of PTK officers contributing more to the blog such as posting ideas or minutes. Joe will be in touch with officers in order to teach them how to use the blog.



Save a Life Tour: Megan Andrade brought up the idea of contributing to the Save a Life Tour. The purpose of this event is to raising Alcohol Awareness. We need volunteers to help out, it takes place on Monday, March 30th from 10am-4pm. More information is shown on www.savealifetour.net



Future Charities: Robert W. Fernandez brought up the idea of continuing to support the Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation through Phi Theta Kappa. This will be up to the future PTK president.



Happy 20th Birthday to our PTK Officer Megan Andrade. Feel free to wish her a Happy Belated Birthday, if you see her around the halls.



Congratulations on becoming our new secretary, Robert W. Fernandez.

Next Meeting: Thursday, March 26, 2009 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm in the alumni conference room in the Nomahegan building.
