Lesson Plan in English *August 30-31 (Thursday/Friday) School Palaro Date: September 3, 2018 Quarter: Second (2nd) Grade Level/Section: 10 Pag-unawa (11:00-12:00) I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson the students are expected to: a. discuss the circles of Hell, and (EN10V-IIb-13.9) b. give example of sin for each circle. (EN10V-IIb-13.9)

II. SUBJECT MATTER Topic: Nine Circles of Hell References: Teacher’s Manual pp. 123-124 and Learner’s Manual pp. 123-129 Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Example of Students’ project III. PROCEDURE Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity A. Preliminary Activity “Goodmorning Class!”

“Goodmorning Ma’am”

“Before we start, will someone lead the prayer?”

(One student will lead the prayer)

“Class Secretary if there are students who are not present today, kindly write their names on one whole sheet of paper. Thank you.”

“Yes Ma’am”

“Before you all sit, pick up any trash under your chairs.”

(students pick the trash under their chairs)

“Do you still remember what we discussed last meeting? Can someone share what he or she remember?”

“Last meeting we discussed about Dante Alighieri and his work The Divine Comedy.”

“Very good. Now before we proceed to lesson, we are going to have an activity.

“We also discussed Canto III.”

Here’s what you are going to do  

The class will be divided into two groups with nine representatives each. You are going to arrange the jumbled words.

 

The group who finish first is the winner. Reward is two additional points in the quiz”

“Yes Ma’am”

“Did you understand the instructions?” “You did your assignments, right? Those words are the name of the circles in Hell.” B. Lesson Proper “This is the continuation of journey of Dante and Virgil.” “Bring out your assignments. We are going to discuss the Nine Circle of Hell.” “What is the first circle?” “What kind of people is in this circle?”

“The first Circle of Hell is Limbo”

“Very good. The people here live in a castle with seven gates which symbolize the seven virtues.”

“The non-Christians and unbaptized pagans.”

“What is the punishment for the people in Limbo?”

“Their punishment includes spending eternity in an inferior form of Heaven.”

“Very good. Here in this circle, Dante sees many prominent people from classical antiquity such as Homer, Socrates, Aristotle, Cicero, Hippocrates and Julius Caesar.” “What is the second circle of Hell?”

“The second circle is Lust”

“Who are the people who belong in this circle?”

“People who are overcome by lust are placed in this level of Hell.”

“Exactly. What is the punishment for these people?”

“Their punishment is being blown violently back and forth by winds; unable to find peace.”

“Dante saw here Cleopatra, Tristan, Helen of Troy, and others who committed adultery in their lifetime.” “Do you understand? Any question?”

“None Ma’am”

“What is the third circle?”

“Gluttony is the in third circle.”

“What kind of people are in this circle?”

“Dante places souls who have habitual greed or excess in eating.”

“What is the punishment in this circle?”

“They are forced to lie in a vile slush that is produced by never ending icy rain.”

“In this circle of Hell Dante places Ciacco.” “What is the fourth Circle?”

“Greed”

“What kind of people are in this circle?”

“People are put in this category for greed, either they hoarded possessions or lavishly spent.”

“What is the punishment?”

“The punishment these sinners face is pushing a great weight with their chests.”

“Dante included cardinals and popes in this circle of Hell.” “What is the fifth circle?”

“The fifth circle is Anger”

“What kind of people are in this circle?”

“Dante places people who were wrathful and sullen in this circle of Hell.”

“What is the punishment for the people who belong in this circle?”

“The punishment for the wrathful is fighting each other on the surface of the river while the sullen gurgle beneath the surface of the water.”

“Dante places Filippo Argenti in this circle of hell.” “What is the sixth circle? And what kind of people belong in here?”

“Sixth Circle is Heresy.”

“Who are the people who reside here and what is their punishment?”

“The heretics who are condemned to eternity in flaming tombs”

“What is the seventh circle?”

“Violence.”

“This circle has three rings. The Outer, the Middle and the Inner ring.” “The outer ring houses murderers and others who were violent to other people and property. Dante sees here Alexander the Great. Dionysius I of Syracuse, Guy de Montfort.” “The middle ring is ring is filled with those who committed suicide. Their punishment is being turned into trees and bushes and fed upon by harpies. He also sees here profligates in this ring who are chased and torn to pieces by dogs.” “In Inner Ring it contains blasphemers and sodomites. Their punishment is staying in a desert of burning sand and burning rain falling from the sky.”

“The eight circle is called?”

“Fraud”

“Who are the souls being punished in this circle?”

“This circle is filled with those who have committed fraud. This circle of Hell is divided into 10 Bolgias or stony ditches with bridges between them.”

“The last circle is called?”

“Treachery”

“This Circle of Hell is divided into 4 Rounds according to the degree of the sin. Round 1 is named after Cain who killed his brother Abel, Round 2 is named after Anthenor of Troy, Round 3 is after Ptolemy (son of Abubus), and Round 4 is named after Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus with a kiss.” “What is the punishment for the souls in this circle?”

“Everyone in this level are frozen in an icy lake, but the more severe the sin, the deeper the person in placed in the ice. Brutus and Cassius are placed by Dante in this circle.”

“Is everything clear? Do you any questions?”

“None Ma’am”

“Then we will have an activity.” C. Application “Again the class will be divided into two groups. I need two representatives for each group.” “Here’s what you are going to do.    

Student A will be Dante and Student B will be Virgil Student A will be blindfolded and Student B will be the one to guide Student A through the maze The first one to arrive at the Circle 9 will be the winner. You can only say the words LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN ans STOP.”

“Do you understand, class?” D. Generalization: “To wrap up the discussion, will someone share what he or she learned today?” IV. EVALUATION

“Yes Ma’am”

“In one whole sheet of paper you are going to write, in order, the nine circles of hell and you will give one example of sin for each circle.” V.
