Get the Hang of It In this lesson, you will learn about tools that scientists use. Sara and James are at the Exploratorium, as well. They use some of the tools that scientists use. Vocabulary scientist, microscope, thermometer, magnifying glass, scale, magnet

Remember: You can talk about things that would have happened. You say: 

I didn't go to the park. If I had gone to the park, I would've seen Tom.

You can talk about things that would not have happened. You say: 

I went to the store. If I hadn't gone to the store, I wouldn't have seen Jen.

You can talk about many things. You say:    

If it hadn't rained, I would've gone to the beach. If it had rained, I wouldn't have gone to the beach. If he had gone to the museum, he would have seen the sculptures. If she hadn't gone to the museum, she wouldn't have seen the sculptures.

You can talk about things that would have happened in different ways. You can say:  

If I had gone to the park, I would have seen Tom. I would have seen Tom if I had gone to the park.

You can talk about things that would not have happened in different ways. You can say:   

If I hadn't gone to the store, I wouldn't have seen Jen. I wouldn't have seen Jen if I hadn't gone to the store. I would've never seen Jen if I hadn't gone to the store.

Sara: Did you use the microscope at that exhibit? James: Yes. I would have never seen those small petals if I hadn’t put the flowers under the microscope. They were really beautiful. Sara: I agree. I looked at them with a magnifying glass. They were so small! James: Did you see the magnets that the guide was talking about? Sara: No, I didn’t. Where were they? James: They were hanging from the ceiling in the back of the exhibit. They were enormous. I tried to pull one of the magnets, but they stayed together. Sara: If I had seen them, then I would have tried to pull the magnets, too. That sounds fun. James: What else did you see today? Sara: I saw a scientist using scales to weigh different kinds of rocks. There were rocks from oceans, rivers, and mountains. James: That’s interesting. Sara: Are you happy that you came to the Exploratorium today? James: Yes. If I hadn’t come to the Exploratorium, I would have never learned all of these amazing new things.

Do you know any scientists? There are scientists who work with animals, weather, electricity, and many other things. Different scientists use different tools. They can use microscopes to see very small things and thermometers to check the temperature of things. A scientist says, "If I hadn't used a microscope, I would've never seen these interesting things!" Scientists use other tools, too. They can weigh things with a scale, and they can use a magnifying glass to make things look bigger. A scientist says, "I would have seen the tiny pieces of the plants if I had used my magnifying glass. I didn't have it with me, but I'll be able to look at the plants later." Now you try! Talk about: 

tools that scientists use

James: I had so much fun at the Exploratorium. I would have never gone there if Zack hadn't told me about it.
