C O M M U NI C A T I O N Communicating better at work Understand communication is a two-way street. It involves giving information and getting feedback from employees. It isn’t finished when information is given. •

Put more emphasis on face-to-face communication with employees. Do not rely on e-mail, bulletin boards, memos and other written communication.

Ask yourself each time you give an instruction, if the message is clear. Most vagueness is caused by failing to be specific.

View information as “service to” fellow employees.

Listen. One way to do this is to ask questions to show interest and clarify points.

Conduct one-on-one meetings.

Concentrate on building credibility.

FIREWORKS 101 Nothing says, “Happy Independence Day!” like the crackle and bang of a pyrotechnics display. Fireworks first appeared around 1000 A.D., in Chinese religious ceremonies. The US imported around $217 million worth of fireworks in 2007, with $207 million of that coming from China, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Various metal salts are used to create the colored explosions: Barium makes green, copper makes blue, and aluminum is responsible for the sparkle.
