"He was an incredibly disciplined and focused young Principal Les Gribben and the Staff of Otamatea man even back then,” Hallissey said "and is truly a Christian School were thrilled to welcome back curfine example of someone who has made their dream rent All Black Rudi Wulf. a reality. The family is thrilled he and returned last year. has finally achieved his goal of the coveted black jerRudi spoke to the children of his journey to becoming sey." an All Black. He used the jerseys he has acquired to “illustrate’ milestones on his journey. These included jerseys from the NZ Colts, North Harbour, NZ Sevens; NZ under 21’s the Auckland Blues and finally the coveted All Black jersey this year. Perhaps even more remarkable is Wulf’s comeback from injury. In 2005, on the eve of his departure to play in his 3rd Colts World Cup match in Argentina, he broke his neck after diving into the shallow end of a swimming pool after training. There was doubt whether he might walk again, let alone play rugby. Wulf was in a halo brace for three months, completely immobilized and in a neck brace for a further three months. What followed could be described as nothing short of miraculous. By 2006 he was playing club rugby, was selected for North Harbour again and played so well he made the Auckland Blues for 2007. He puts his recovery down to the support of family and friends, prayer and a continuing faith in God. He spoke to the children about making your dream a reality. Never give up… Achieve your goal, set a new one and work even harder to achieve it. Find out what your passion is and do what ever you have to do to achieve it. Wulf also talked about the thrill of hearing his name announced on the radio as a new All Black, performing the haka, and achieving a goal he had only dreamed of – playing rugby with his heroes. He also added that it was necessary for the children to pay attention to their lessons, to listen to their teachers, to become good citizens and be the best you possibly can be. This, he said, was important for himself as his rugby would not last forever. Wulf spent time signing autographs and having his photo taken with various children in the jerseys spanning his career. It was amazing the number of female students – and staff! – who wanted to have their photos taken with one of N. Z’s latest All Black! Following the Christian School visit, Wulf visited Oatamatea High School, Maungaturoto Primary School, Maungaturoto Nursing Home and two sick rugby fans in the district.

A visit from All Black Rudi Wulf

Wulf was brought to Maungaturoto by local resident Paddy Hallissey whose daughter Kate attends the school. Hallissey met Wulf when he was teaching at Rosmini College in Takapuna, Auckland and man-

Otamatea Day Camp - coming up soon Quick! Get your red marker pen out and mark these dates on your 2009 calendar……….. Wednesday 15th to Friday 17th April. These are the dates for “Otamatea Day Camp 2009”. Yes, we the committee have set the dates and put some wheels in motion. I can hear some of you asking, “What on earth is Day Camp?” Well, if you are aged six-12 years old, love having fun in the outdoors, singing and campfires, watching a drama unfold and building huts in the bush, meeting 130 other kids and learning new skills, then you’ll probably want to put those dates on your adult’s calendar, because you’ll get to do all those things and more at Day Camp. Day Camp is run over the days above. The children arrive at a secret (but not too secret) paddock down Station Road, Paparoa to find a huge marquee and a bunch of enthusiastic adults and teen leaders waiting to take them through a day filled with all the above activities plus more, until 4pm. Then buses arrive to bring them home to you. This happens for three days until the adults are ready to drop and the kids are still buzzing. This wraps up with a BBQ tea for you and the kids on the Friday evening. This is the condensed version and a taste of what we will begin telling you in full closer to the time. This event is run by the churches of Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Ararua. If you can’t wait and want to know more, you can contact Ruth Rosser on 431 8491, Janine Sheppard on 431 7196 or Debbie Blythen on 431 6892.

MAUNGATUROTO COMMUNITY WEBSITE www.realtownmaungaturoto.co.nz

www.realtownmaungaturoto.co.nz and support your community by using the website - it’s there for everyone. Maungaturoto Hockey Club AGM

Maungaturoto’s very own community website has undergone a facelift. Thanks to Amy Forbes who built the original website, it was easy to transfer information from her website to the new one. Taking a step away from the traditional layout of community websites, Dogstar Web Solutions gave the site a customised look that sets it apart from the rest. With a vibrant colour scheme taken from the community’s very own town logo, it has been a great project to work on.

Thursday 12th February, 7pm at the Maungaturoto Plunket Rooms, Hurndall St All welcome, young and old, new and used! For further information please contact: Karen Cullen 431 8530 Linda Cowbourne 431 9109

The purpose of the community website is to draw people to the town whether for holidays or to settle. Whatever the case, the website is a great promotional tool. Local businesses have the chance to advertise to the community and a wider audience; clubs can advertise annual, community events and regional events, and submit newsletters and photographs. Very soon everyone will be able to use the online Community Notice Board to place ads for goods, home rentals, garage sales and more. Check out the website at
