Christian Comment That "Use by Date." There is much in the marketplace for consumers that has somewhere on the product a "use by date”. This is because the ingredients degenerate over a period of time, some quicker than others. A lot of foodstuffs, medicines and other chemical preparations come into this category. These products may be viable past the date, but the manufacturer will not guarantee them, and eventually they certainly don't do the job properly. Our physical body has a definite use by date, which happily is not printed on it, for us or anybody else to see. The best scientists have to acknowledge that one day the body will cease functioning (death). The Bible says that it is appointed for man to die once, and after that the judgment. We have a period of time to get right with God before that use by date arrives. Christ died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins. Jesus said, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him (trusts in and relies on Him) shall not perish but have eternal life ---- Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." For those who repent of sin, and die with faith in Christ for forgiveness of sins, the Bible assures us that there is a day of resurrection for the physical body. This will be changed to be like Christ's glorious body, and will have no "Use by Date," as it is made by God to last forever. This is the Good News of the gospel. Peter Cullen, Congregational Church. CHEERS MAUNGATUROTO!!!!!!! Thanks Maungie! That’s another successful parade over for another year. It was great to see so many new faces and so many children lining the street. I would like to thank the many helpers involved - I won’t name you all as I will probably miss someone out, but know that all of you are wonderful and that I am truly grateful for all your help. It was great to have 19 floats plus a few extras, an excellent turnout. Congrats to the winners and to everyone who

put in time and effort making floats, decorate windows and put up lights. One comment I would like to make (and it’s a question I’ve been asked many times) where were the main street businesses floats? Yes, we are all busy, but considering it’s good free advertising and a good way to support your community (it’s a two-way bridge; we need each other to function). I challenge all local businesses, especially the main street ones, to be in the parade next year!. A special mention must go to the North Power lads who, as you have hopefully all noticed, put up the new Xmas signs in town on short notice. These were provided by the Maungaturoto business and community committee, and I must say they make our town look very festive. Also thanks to Fonterra and the Kaipara District Council for the drinks and lollies. Here are the winners on the day: Best Dressed (sponsored by Urban Fringe) : Tasha Perrett Best Window Display : Country Interiors Best dressed house (sponsored by Carters): The Pilmer house Best Business Float: Maungie Tanks Community Floats: 1st Maungaturoto Primary school 2nd ORT 3rd Maungaturoto Garden club Lastly a huge thanks to the Maungaturoto Business and community committee who sponsor the parade and the Maungaturoto Country C for their wonderful organising of the after function. So it is now time to get your feedback. I would really like to know what you liked/disliked about the parade, what we could do to make it better, or even offers to be involved next year. You can give me a call on 4318 599 or send me an e-mail at [email protected] THANKS MAUNGIE YOU REALLY MADE ME PROUD Terri Donaldson

Linking Hands Inc. Well hello and welcome to the New Year. Linking Hands has been busy over Christmas transporting clients to hospital and medical appointments; our driver received many requests so we made the right choice to keep working over the break. We are delighted to tell you we now have a part-time paid driver. We were able to get funding to pay part-time wages so don’t have to put so much pressure on volunteers. But they are still very much needed and

MAUNGATUROTO SKATEPARK UPDATE

We were the excited recipients of many gifts and parcels to find homes for over the weeks leading up to Christmas. From a lovely food parcel from the Keas, through wooden toys, gift wrapped parcels and believe it or not a Ham which we were able to slice and give to some families who had fallen on hard times. We enjoy working with the Congregational Church each year in packing food parcels and thank them for their generosity. Your kindeness and care are deeply appreciated by all those who were recipients of these gifts, in many cases they were received with an outpouring of thanks and tears.

Just a quick update on how the Maungaturoto Skatepark is going. It's been nice to see that there are some people out there who are using it properly congrats to them but there are still a few other people who are determined to ruin things.

In the last month a rail has been stolen, more graffiti has shown up, someone has dug out of the hillside with their spade and a spa pool (of all things) was dumped down there and still has to yet to be removed, the front gate has been torn away, and a huge amount of broken bottles and rubbish also I hope you have all enjoyed a lovely summer break, a needs to be cleaned up. MR G’S PIGLETS Christmas gifts come in all shapes and size and sometimes even alive! Their contents can surprise us at times!! This was the case for Mr G when Chocolatte, one of his breeding sows, gave birth to four very lovely bonny piglets on Christmas Day. The surprise was that no-one knew, until about the week before the birth, that she was even pregnant! Three piglets were brown with black markings and one was pink; three were boys, one a girl. So why does it surprise me that at nearly three weeks of age they are the size of our normal six-week-old weaners. Anyone who has seen Gilbert’s pigs knows how well they are fed - some might say overfed! Our year has started well - the next litter is due at the end end of February, so this has been kind of a bonus. You all have a good year! -Jayne King.

“OPERA IN THE GARDEN” Opera in the Garden will be held in Rick and Joan Kennaway’s avocado orchard at Glenbervie, Whangarei on Saturday 14th March, 2009. Rick and Joan farmed for years in the Maungaturoto area and were very involved with Otamatea Repertory Theatre, as many well know.

work and the drive to get where he wants to go. He has been invited by Joan and Rick to perform at Opera in the Garden, so we can all enjoy his wealth of experience. Hayden’s overseas experience during the past few years includes being one of twelve finalists in BBC Voice of Musical Theatre in 2005. This competition featured the best music theatre performers from around the world. Later that year he went on to play Marius in “Le Misérables” in London’s West End on the occasion of their Twentieth Anniversary performance. Hayden then returned to Australia where he took the leading role of Thomas Andrews in “Titanic” and during 2007 he starred opposite Teddy Tahu Reeves in the operatic version of “Dead Man Walking” based on the movie of the same name. Last year he played Gus, the theatre cat in “Cats” in Seoul, Korea and returned to Australia to play Professor Bhaer in “Little Women”. In addition to this, Hayden compiled a CD in 2003 and is now compiling another.
