CONGRATULATIONS JOYCE ON REACHING 100 YEARS.
THE BRASS VERDICT by Michael Connelly This is a courtroom drama featuring lawyer Mickey Haller from Michael Connelly’s previous novel The Lincoln Lawyer and things are finally looking up for him.
Mrs Joyce Gouk celebrated her 100th birthday at the home of her son-in-law Trevor Brljevich and late daughter Yvonne Brljevich.
After two years of wrong turns, Haller is ready to go back to the courtroom. When Hollywood lawyer Jerry Vincent is murdered, Haller inherits his biggest case yet. Enter Harry Bosch, detective.
Fifty family and friends joined her including her son Ross Watson 66 years, and sisters Jessie 92 years, Tuppy 88 years, Buster 84 years, and great, great grandson Cole Fergusson aged 11 months.
Determined to find Vincent's killer, he is not opposed to using Haller as bait. But as danger mounts and the stakes rise, these two loners realize their only choice is to work together.
Trevor’s home was decorated with over 60 photos of her life, from her parents down to photos of A great read for Harry Bosch fans with many twists and Cole. The gathering was continually served nibturns – but well worth the ride! bles all afternoon, by her great granddaughters Chole Watson, Jordyn Smith and Jordyn’s cousin REMINDER : $10.00 yearly Library family membership Molly Beecroft. fee is due as at 1 January 2009.
A cake made by Trevor’s sister Marie Harris was cut. Among the many cards Joyce received were cards from Her Majesty The Queen, the Governor General, the Minster of Internal Affairs and local MP John Carter.

MAUNGATUROTO GARDEN CLUB On 10 December, Garden Club members and visitors attended our Christmas lunch at Pam McCallum’s home where Pam had made some delicious mulled wine which was enjoyed before our meeting. As usual a wonderful variety of dishes provided by members for a pot luck lunch was enjoyed. The highlight of the afternoon was a walk around the grounds to the lake and fountain then through the forest bush walk. Also the garden along the drive to the house has been developed with many varieties of trees and flowering bushes – a lovely shady setting.

MAUNGATUROTO PLAYCENTRE NEWS Kia ora, We had a really fun end to Term Four last year. We had a visit to see Hargreaves’ aeroplane - it zoomed in and landed while we watched, and we were allowed to look at it up close - thank you Murray and Kathy for that, and for the picnic morning tea in your lovely garden. The weather was perfect for our Christmas party at Waipu Cove - we had races and won buckets and spades which were used to excavate the beach in various places. Santa left a sack of presents and our picnic was delicious. Thanks to all who planned and attended. The Santa Parade saw a colourful and enthusiastic group of bikies from playcentre ride down the main street of Maungaturoto, each convinced that the spectators were there just to see them. Well done to everyone - you looked fantastic.

Santa Claus DID come to town! That’s my guess about the guy in red who cruised through Maungaturoto in the town’s annual Christmas Parade, then . . . disappeared. Santa didn’t come to the after-match party at the Country Club and there were a few long-faced children as a result. But consider the prospect of meeting punters if, indeed, he was the real Santa. The guy who drops by on Christmas Eve is known to be shy. He might drink milk or beer that’s left for him, but never hangs around hoping to get to know people. And at this time of year, the real Santa is frantic. So many gifts, so many kids, so many miles, so many elves and, the real biggie, so many reindeer to train to peak physical fitness. Yep, it’s official. When Mike, who was lined up to be the fake Santa in the parade, couldn’t make it, he contacted the real Santa. This raises some interesting questions because one person suggested he was Maori, another wondered if ‘he’ was actually a woman. Then someone said the parade organiser would know. But although she was zipping round in a foxy Santa dress looking pretty authoritative, she had no idea. She also seemed rather too pleased about the unknown identity of the mystery man in red, which confirms suspicions that he was the real Santa. And that’s why he disappeared so soon. The magician disappeared too - in the best possible way. When Circus

Kumarani of Dargaville said they would come to the party to stilt-walk and juggle, the budget wouldn’t stretch. When we tentatively asked the magician if he wouldn’t mind disappearing he was overjoyed. Christmas is frantic for magicians and, unlike Santas, they can’t delegate. He had two appointments that day and was only too pleased to postpone the third. Sadly Doug the Digger disappeared too - but not in a good way. He phoned in the afternoon to say his truck’s electronics had blown out and a fix couldn’t be arranged till Monday and would cost $3000. Even the magician couldn’t solve that one. Luckily the RockUp inflatable pirate ship arrived, along with the Mangawhai Agility Dogs. They wowed the crowd with their dancing, jumping and leaping. The farmer was impressed with the dogs’ ability to put a paw on a button which sent a ball flying which they would then neatly catch. One of these wonder dogs is related to my dear Floss same parents, different litter. And a much more skilled handler! We spent much of the day in a mild panic, wondering whether the musician had disappeared too. The deal had been done, the contract signed, but efforts to contact him in recent days had failed. But he showed up armed with Christmas music, a can-do attitude and a fantastic singing voice then crooned into the night, long after most of the happy little children and their mums and dads had disappeared. - Rae
