after terrorist attack in Pulwama Pak has started a war, we will end it: Maj. Gen. G D Bakshi

In a sharp reaction to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's statements on the deadly Pulwama attack, Retired Major General Gagandeep Bakshi has termed the killing of over 40 soldiers in a premeditated operation as an "act of war" and it is now for India to finish what Pakistan had started. Citing Khan’s televised address earlier on Tuesday, Bakshi said, "On 14th February his Jaishe-Mohammed (JeM) network attacked our CRPF convey and killed 40 people. JeM has proudly owned up to it. What they did is not an act of terror; it is an act of war. They started it but we will finish it.” He also asserted that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was not elected to the post but selected by the country’s army for the job. “Imran Khan is a selected prime minister and not elected Prime Minister. "Imran Khan is not in control of the army that we know but it is now known that he is not even in control of Masood Azhar. We have tolerated much but won't tolerate now. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan earlier today promised “action” if “actionable intelligence” is provided by India about links to Pulwama attack in his country but warned of retaliation, without even thinking, if any kind of military action is launched by India. National Party

on offense ahead of capital gains tax report

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters made this statement about capital gains tax, National Party leader Simon Bridges speaking on TVNZ. The opposition has already started to "It's very launch pre-emptive attacks about a clear - it's off the table. The two factors potential capital gains tax, two days are: it doesn't work, the second thing is before the Tax Working Group reveals its there's no fairness if you haven't given final recommendations. capital losses consideration as well." There's been a great deal of interest in that report, particularly in recommendations it will make about how to tax capital gains. Labour has long campaigned on a capital gains tax, unlike its coalition partner New Zealand First, which has actively opposed it. Negotiations between those two parties and the Greens are well underway ahead of the report's official release. During the 2017 election campaign the

Today he referred to the existing bright line test, when asked for his view on capital gains tax. "You've got a capital gains tax already... this is an issue about the extension of a capital gains tax." He would not comment further until he had seen the advice and sought expert advice, he said. "More importantly listen to the business end and the working end of town and hear what the New Zealanders think,

and we'll let you know what we think." Australia has a capital gains tax, with the family home exempted. But National's leader Simon Bridges said introducing one here would drive New Zealanders across the Tasman. "It's going to ruin the ability of people with farms and nest eggs to get ahead ... it's a recipe for more people buggering off to Australia." Recommendations in the Tax Working Group's interim report did not include a straight capital gains tax. MPs were asked how many houses they owned, and if they had more than one whether they'd be willing to pay a capital gains tax. Finance Minister Grant Robertson said he, along with his partner and the bank, owned one home, so it was not an issue for him. His colleague Iain Lees-Galloway said he had a family home, rental and an interest in his father's home.

In response to whether he'd be happy paying a capital gains tax, he said: "If that's what the final government proposal is, yes, I would." National MPs who owned more than one property, including Mr Bridges and finance spokesperson Amy Adams, said they wouldn't like to pay a capital gains tax - not a personal point of view, but because they viewed it as bad policy. MP Todd McClay said he would have to check, as he was unsure whether he had three or four properties in trust. He was asked whether most New Zealanders knew how many properties they owned - "you'd have to ask them", he replied. The final recommendations of the Tax Working Group will be made public at 11am on Thursday. Mr Robertson will give an initial response soon after that, but it will be several weeks before he confirms the government's final proposal. -RNZ

Chinese community in New Zealand celebrate Lantern Festival

The Chinese community in New Zealand celebrated Chinese New Year and Chinese Year of the Pig with Lantern Festival at Auckland Domain from Thursday 14th February to Sunday 17th February. Like every year, during these four days several thousand people were dazzled and entertained by hundreds

of handmade Chinese lantern, music and dance performances, martial art demonstrations, traditional Chinese art and craft and of course the worldfamous Chinese food. There were over 200 food stalls serving different Chinese delicacies and people coming to visit the festival enjoyed the food to the core. The festival is organised on such a large scale that people coming to visit it were amazed at its sheer magnitude. On the last day of the festival a very spectacular and dazzling fire work took place to end the festival which lasted to around half

an hour. The Chinese community has been organising the festival in New Zealand since last 30 odd years and since then has grown many folds in its popularity, which is apparent in its number of people coming to visit it. Like Diwali festival in Aotearoa square, Chinese festival is also highlight of the Auckland’s festival calendar. Every year 30,000-40,000 thousand people come to these festivals. According to the Chinese zodiac calendar this year 2019 is the year of Pig, which they believe is very auspicious for them. The Pig occupies twelfth position in Chinese zodiac after the Dog, and before the Rat. If you were born in a Pig year, you are known as Pig in China. The Pig is considered to a symbol of prosperity, love,

health and romance. There are many types of Pig zodiacs and this year is the year of Earth Pig. Earlier the festival was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of New Zealand on Thursday 14th February, amidst the news of currently strained relation between the two countries. The festival is organised by the Auckland Tourism Event and Economic Development (ATEED) in Auckland and it is also celebrated in some other parts of New Zealand.

Upset Hindus seek suspension of Perth college

principal for kicking out girl for nose stud Upset Hindus are seeking suspension of the principal of Aranmore Catholic College (ACC) in Leederville (Perth), which reportedly kicked out a Hindu teenager from school for wearing a tiny nose stud. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged Western Australia (WA) Minister for Education and Training Suzanne (Sue) Mary Ellery, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Perth Timothy Costelloe, Catholic Education Commission of WA Chair Bishop Gerard Holohan and Catholic Education WA Executive Director Debra Sayce to launch a thorough investigation of the school policies and procedures; which seemed discriminatory and denied the right to this teenager Sanya Singhal to express her religious and cultural identity freely. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, said that this student was apparently honouring

the tradition of her family, who were reportedly of India descent, by putting a stud in her pierced nose. Nose piercing and nose ornaments had been a tradition of women of India for centuries and the Hindu goddesses had been depicted wearing nose ornaments. Rajan Zed stated that Hindus worldwide were shocked at this heart-breaking unilateral action of a college against a “good student”, simply for following her religious beliefs and sincerely believing that wearing a nose stud was part of her religion and culture. Moreover, with this action ACC, whose motto is TRUST and which claims to be a “welcoming community”, seemed to be violating its own stated “Beliefs and Values”: “As a multicultural community, we value diversity, believing that all should be accepted and celebrated” and “We believe in the inherent dignity of the individual”; Zed indicated. Besides suspending principal Declan Tanham and cooperating in the enquiry;

ACC Board lead by chairperson Joe Monterosso should admit the mistake, immediately reinstate and apologize to Sanya and her parents, issue a formal apology, and amend the “Uniform and Grooming Guidelines” accordingly for future; Rajan Zed noted. Zed further said that they respected the school dress code policy as long as it did not violate the traditions and beliefs of the pupils. Noses of girls in India were

usually pierced around puberty and it reportedly found mention in ancient Ayurvedic text. Old architecture and paintings of India depicted the presence of tradition of nose ornaments and Indian poets had been singing their praise. It was sad that despite Australia being a diverse multi-cultural society and despite Sanya reportedly bringing a note from her mother explaining the significance and background of the nose stud and even offering it to cover it with adhesive bandage, the school decided to kick her out; Rajan Zed added. ACC, which describes itself as “a school with spirit”, is a co-educational school for years 7–12 founded by Sisters of Mercy in 1903. It has about 700 students and boasts over 60 nationalities amongst its students. Catholic Education system, WA’s second largest, educates over 73,000 in 163 schools/colleges in the state “with a focus on the development of the whole person”.

Prayers for Pulwama Bravehearts in Tauranga • Erum Ali The Pulwama attack, considered the worst in decades, has fuelled tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. Roshan Nauhria, Anil Sharma, Joga Singh from the NZPP travelled to Tauranga to offer prayers at the Sanatan Dharam Mandir along with members of the Indian community. Kuldip Kumar from Tauranga along with Sanjeev Kumar, Sanjeev Dewatt, Roman Daily, Vikram Chhabra, Mohan Lal Daily and the NZPP members lit candles and diyas and said a prayer for the departed souls of the soldiers who have lost their lives in this attack. They also offered prayers for World Peace.

With India still reeling in shock and grief from the terror act in Pulwama that claimed the lives of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Jawans on February 14, the Indian community came together to express solidarity with their nation. Anil Sharma said, “More than 50 countries have condemned the attack and offered support to India. But the community must be careful about motivated rumours that are being circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms with the objective of setting off one Indian against another as this will only serve the interest of the foreign enemy", he warned.

enemy should be afraid of us knowing that we stand united.” Joga Singh also condemned the attack and said these are trying times for the whole country. We grieve for our soldiers and their families who have lost their brave men. A war cry is not always the solution. We must remember that every soldier who dies is also somebody’s brother, father or son. At this time of deep sorrow we must remain strong and united. We must try to combat the divisive forces who are breaking the country. A large number of Indians took part in

the condolence meeting at the Indian Temple in Tauranga on Sunday evening to pay homage to the soldiers who were martyred in the terror attack in Kashmir.

Calling on all Indians to stand united at this time, the party President Roshan Nauhria said "So many people from all religions -- Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and Muslims who have lived together in India from decades -- are testimony to the fact that we may have our differences but those are all within a certain

NZPP chief condemns deadly terrorist attack on CRPF in Pulwama • Erum Ali New Zealand People’s Party President, Roshan Nauhria has condemned the deadly terrorist attack on the CRPF security troops in Jammu and Kashmir in India and has called for the perpetrators of crime to be brought to justice. In a statement issued by the NZPP to The Indian News, Anil Sharma, the General Secretary expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. He said that he is deeply saddened by the news of the horrific and heinous attack on the Police convoy in India. The NZPP General Secretary called for the perpetrators of these crimes to be swiftly brought to justice. Anil Sharma added that Mr. Roshan reiterated the support of the party to the Indian Government and the people of India in their efforts to fight terrorism and violent extremism, and to carry forward the peace process in the disturbed Jammu and Kashmir region.

According to reports, the bombings ripped through the Pulwama province of Jammu and Kashmir, which is in the northern Indian region on 14th February. The bomber used a vehicle packed with explosives to ram a convoy of 78 buses carrying Indian security forces on the heavily guarded SrinagarJammu highway causing deep shock and anger among Indians worldwide. The entire international community has condemned the deadly attack at the Jawans that has left more than 45 paramilitary personnel dead and many critically wounded. Joga Singh from NZPP labelled it as a despicable act of cowardice and offered condolences to the affected families. “An attack on the country’s paramilitary forces who were travelling to their destination on duty is not just a despicable act of cowardice, but also a strongly condemnable act. My deepest condolences to all the families affected by this tragedy," Joga Singh said.

Hitting 2019 running - Michael Wood Mr. Michael Wood

MP for Mt Roskill, Auckland, NZ Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister for Ethnic Communities It’s been a fabulous summer here in Auckland. I hope you’ve all enjoyed it! It’s been a busy start to the year for Labour, and we’re getting right back into things at the Beehive this week. This summer, I was lucky enough to escape to a lovely little spot on the East Coast with my wife and boys for a few days earlier in the year for a great break. Last year, the Government ticked off some major achievements, like getting overseas speculators out of our housing market, starting the big job of fixing up our schools and hospitals, and protecting our strong economic growth while paying down our debt and presiding over the lowest unemployment in a decade. Locally, you may already have noticed some of the following changes for Auckland:

Jobs and unemployment, Safety, Housing, Transport, Health investments and Education: • Unemployment rate is at 4.2%, a reduction of 0.4% since September 2017

quarter) • 917,000 jobs (up 18,300 since September 2017 quarter) • 436 extra police in Auckland – a 17% increase • 50,000 Kiwi Build homes to be built in Auckland • 280 new apartments in Auckland • $5.7b overall over three years • SkyPath project across the Harbour Bridge • SeaPath project , between Northcote Point and Esmonde Road • Automatic pedestrian crossing gates $7.6m • Major upgrades to Auckland Hospitals • New medical centre in Beachlends and pilot for several mental health initiatives with the Counties Manukau DHB • New addiction treatment facility for City Mission • 56 new classrooms in Auckland ($37m) • $22.8m for a new primary school at Hobson Ville for 650 students • Onehunga High redevelopment of

$28m and Northcote College ($11.5m) and the replacement of Onepoto Primary School ($19.5m) For the first time ever, New Zealand will have a Wellbeing Budget. This means that, alongside important economic indicators like GDP, we’ll also measure how the economy is delivering better standards of living across New Zealand. This is a world first, which is why Jacinda Ardern got so much positive attention overseas for it. Doing it right has the potential to lead global change on how we improve prosperity for everyone. Thanks to the Provincial Growth Fund, we’re doing right by New Zealand’s regions, where we’re investing in local communities to ensure their people are housed, safe, and have better access to education and employment. With the help of the Families Package and Healthy Homes policy we introduced last year, tens of thousands of Kiwi homes will be warmer, drier, and healthier. The cupboards in 384,000 family homes can better-stocked, and the basics bought for the start of a new school year. These things demonstrate our care for those at the edges of society

Politics

who most need our help. 33,000 new houses were consented last year – the highest number since the 1970s, and we expect those consents to turn into homes this year. We also provided over 1,300 more public housing places. We’re working hard on housing and will not stand by as young families are forced to sleep in cars for another winter. We’ve achieved a lot and have a long way to go, but we’re on the right track. We’ve aspired to do great things for New Zealand and this is another year of delivering. 2019 is going to be a great year. We need all the support you can give us to achieve all what we aspire to do. Have a wonderful year!

Government lets down

New Zealanders • Mr. Kanwaljit S Bakshi

National List MP based in Manukau East and is New Zealand Parliament’s first Indian Sikh Member The Government’s ‘no eviction’ policy and soft stance on criminal and antisocial behaviour has seen neighbours forced to put up with unruly Housing New Zealand tenants. More and more innocent and lawabiding people are being forced to uproot their lives and live elsewhere due to this Government’s decision not to evict tenants due to anti-social behaviour. Just as it may be the Government’s job to ensure all New Zealander’s have a roof over their head, it is also the Government’s job to ensure law-abiding families are able to continue living their lives without fear of their neighbours, instead this Government is willing to protect tenants who are involved in criminal behaviour and disrupting the entire street. A home should be a safe haven for families, not a place of intimidation and fear. Negligence of law-abiding New Zealanders is not limited to housing. The annual Salvation Army State of the Nation report shows that a Government which claims to make the wellbeing of children and families its top priority is failing them miserably. The number of children in benefit dependent households is up, the number

of care and protection reports is up, the number of family violence referrals for child abuse and neglect is up, the number of recorded offences against children under the age of 15 for serious assault resulting in injury is up, young people not in education, employment or training (NEETS) is up, the number of people on jobseeker benefit is up, household indebtedness is up, the cost of living has risen faster for low income families and the number of total ECE enrolments down. For a Government that claimed that ‘children are at the heart of everything we do’ the Salvation Army State of the Nation report should serve as an eye opener. I have repeatedly pointed out that this Government is big on rhetoric that doesn’t match the reality. This Labour led coalition Government is failing New Zealanders on all fronts – from housing to our children and vulnerable New Zealanders. This Government talks about supporting the most vulnerable and improving wellbeing, but it’s the results that matter. National’s social investment approach which set targets, measured progress and meant the Government was accountable for the improvements it was making to peoples’ lives because it’s improving lives that matters. Now we have a Government that talks a lot about aspiration, but this report makes it clear that good intentions don’t make for good policy, or good outcomes.

India News Defence Ministry gives nod for Cabinet approves production of 114 'Dhanush' guns Triple Talaq ordinance The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has received the bulk production clearance (BPC) from the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army for production of 114 Dhanush indigenous artillery guns.

"The indigenous 155mm x 45 calibre artillery guns is the first long-range gun to be produced in India and "it is a major success story of the 'Make in India' initiative," read a statement. The gun is equipped with inertial navigationbased sighting system, auto-laying facility, on-board ballistic computation and an advanced day and night direct firing system. The self-propulsion unit allows the gun to negotiate and deploy itself in mountainous terrains with ease. "Dhanush has been mechanically upgraded to fire standard NATO 155 mm ammunition and can accommodate both boll bags and the bi-modular charge system (BMCS) which have resulted in increasing the range. Dhanush has also been electronically upgraded to enhance the firing accuracies, laying speeds of the existing gun and to provide compatibility with various kinds of ammo as well," the statement

added.

Dhanush's performance has been evaluated under arduous conditions in several phases. "The manufacture of a 155 mm modern artillery gun was initially a challenge for OFB. This was due to a change in the vision parameters from 155x39 calibre to 155x45 calibre. OFB received the Transfer of Technology (ToT) documents pertaining to 155x39 calibre and then converted it to 155x45 calibre successfully," the statement further read. Dhanush is the product of joint efforts by the OFB and the Indian Army with contributions from DRDO, DGQA, DPSUs such as BEL, PSUs such as SAIL and several private enterprises.

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved Triple Talaq ordinance, said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Addressing media persons here, Jaitley said: "The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval to the promulgation of an Ordinance, namely, the Muslim Women (Protection of Right on Marriage) Second Ordinance, 2019, as per Appendix-111 under the clause (1) of Article 123 of the Constitution." The proposal moves necessary official amendments in the Muslim Women (Protection of Right on Marriage) Bill, 2018 pending in the Rajya Sabha to replace the aforesaid Ordinance with such modifications of drafting and consequential nature as may be necessary, he said. The proposed Ordinance will protect the rights of married Muslim women and prevent divorce by the practice of instantaneous and irrevocable--talaq-e-biddat' by their husbands. It will discourage the practice of triple talaq and provide the rights of subsistence allowance, custody of minor children to the victims of triple talaq. The Triple Talaq Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on December 27 last

year with 245 votes in favour and 11 against the Bill. The opposition parties want the Bill to be sent to the Select Committee of Parliament for further vetting, a demand which was rejected by the Centre. However, an ordinance was re-promulgated in January this year as the revised Bill could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha where the government lacks a majority. The Bill criminalises the practice of instant triple talaq with a provision of three years imprisonment to the erring husband. The issue of triple talaq was taken up in the Parliament in August last year after a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled "unconstitutional" a practice that allows Muslim men to divorce their wives simply by uttering "talaq" three times in quick succession. In a landmark 3-2 verdict, the Supreme Court found the practice un-Islamic and "arbitrary" and disagreed that triple talaq was an integral part of religious practice.

Telangana: Swine flu cases on

rise, 496 positive cases reported this year The state of Telangana is witnessing an alarming rise in the number of swine flu cases, with at least 496 people testing positive for the infectious seasonal influenza so far this year. Sharing details of the swine flu cases in the state, Dr K Shankar, Director, Government Institute of Preventive Medicine, said “In January month of 2019 we have tested 1657 Swine flu samples from across the Telangana state in which 307 turned Swine Flu positive. "And in February till today we have tested 1108 Swine Flu samples and in which 189 turned Swine Flu positive. A total of 496 cases reported till now in this year,” he said. He said the rise in the number of cases could be attributed to fluctuating temperatures among other reasons. "In this season Swine Flu is still persisting probably due to fluctuations in the temperature. Mortality is less compared to the other states, but the spread of the disease is more. The public should

take more precautions and measures to prevent themselves from Swine Flu” he said. Although the number of cases is high, Dr Shankar pointed out that the mortality rate is very less. Swine flu is an infection caused by one of several swine influenza viruses (SIV), with the H1N1 strain being the most common across the country. H1N1 virus spreads when an individual touch an infected person or breathes droplets of coughs and sneezes that are in the air.

on Pak to act against terror organisations United States ambassador to India Kenneth Juster on Tuesday condoled the Pulwama terror attack that claimed lives of 40 CRPF personnel on February 14 and called on Pakistan to act against the terror organisations operating in the country. Speaking at a press conference here, Kenneth Juster also extended his condolences to the Indian Air Force pilot who died after two aircraft of the Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team crashed at the Yelahanka airbase here. Twenty-eight U.S. companies are participating in Aero India, 19 of which are exhibiting in the USA Partnership Pavilion, organised for the fifth consecutive edition by Kallman Worldwide, Juster announced. The envoy also hailed the US-India relationship stating that last year Indian armed forces conducted more defence exercises with the US than any other armed forces in the world. He further elaborated on the visit of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to the US. Juster, also announced

that India, US and Japan will hold the 'Malabar trilateral Naval exercise'. "US and India will also hold the first-ever tri-service exercise, before this, we had service to service exercise, but this will be tri-service as it was agreed in 2+2 ministerial that we held last September. We also hope to conclude other significant agreement including bilateral cooperation agreement," Juster said. "The United States and India are committed to strengthening defence cooperation, in line with India’s status as a Major Defense Partner. Defence acquisitions are an important component in deepening our bilateral ties and contributing to a balanced trade relationship," he added. US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Alan Shaffer and Director of the Defence Security Cooperation Agency, Lieutenant General Charles Hooper were present at the conference.

Echoing Juster's condolences Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Alan Shaffer extended his sympathies to Pulwama terror attack victims and the pilot who lost his life in the crash that happened in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The 12th Aero India Exhibition will be held at the Yelahanka Air Force Station here from February 20 to 24.

Pakistan snubbed by ICJ on Day 2 of Jadhav hearing by a military court during an "opaque" hearing and that he should be released forthwith.

Pakistan was snubbed on Tuesday at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) here when it sought replacement of an ad-hoc Pakistani judge in the court during the hearing of the case related to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav who has been sentenced to death by a military court in Pakistan. Pakistan's Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan said his country's ad-hoc judge to the ICJ, Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, suffered cardiac arrest on Monday during the first day of hearings of the case and requested that his replacement be sworn-in before he could make his argument. However, the ICJ President, Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, overlooked the plea and told the Pakistani advocate, "I would like to ask you to read your statement if your statement is ready. We are ready to hear you and hear your side," Khan then went on to make his argument, a day after the Indian side told the world court that Jadhav had been sentenced to death

In his representation, the Pakistani advocate said the Indian claim to relief must be dismissed. Jadhav, 48, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism on April 11, 2017, following which India moved the ICJ, challenging the verdict. Subsequently, on May 18, 2017, a 10-member bench of ICJ restrained Pakistan from executing Jadhav till the adjudication of the case. During

the hearing yesterday, India's advocate Harish Salve raised questions over how a military court could hold a trial for a civilian without giving him a due and transparent right to defend. India had yesterday highlighted that Jadhav was being used as a pawn by Pakistan to build a narrative against New Delhi - a claim which was strengthened by Pakistan's statements at The Hague today. The Pakistani advocate made all kinds of bizarre allegations against Jadhav, accusing him of being responsible for subversive activities in Pakistan. India has maintained that Jadhav, a former

Naval officer-turned-businessman, was innocent and he had been kidnapped by Pakistani intelligence agencies from Iran. Salve told the court yesterday that Jadhav had been suffering for last three years and even 13 requests by India for consular access had not been accepted by Pakistan, violating the Vienna Convention. Khan, in his argument, claimed that "Pakistan has treated Commander Jadhav in a manner that is due to every human being. On humanitarian grounds, Pakistan has allowed Commander Jadhav's mother and wife to visit him."

Tension in India and Pakistan could affect

Afghan-peace process: Zahid Nasurllah Khan Echoing the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's recent warning to India, Islamabad Ambassador to Afghanistan Zahid Nasrullah Khan on Tuesday said that the country will strike back against any military hostility by New Delhi. Pakistan Ambassador to Afghanistan Zahid Nasrullah Khan on Tuesday claimed that the escalation of tension between India and Pakistan could have serious implication over Afghan-peace process. “Since the development is so momentous that it can affect the stability of the entire region,” Tolo

news quoted Zahid as saying. This came in the wake of de-escalation of India and Pakistan relations after the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed by a Pakistan-sponsored JeM terrorist. While talking about Pakistan efforts in the peace process, he said, “Pakistan is making a very major effort, playing its key role which is being recognized internationally. But it is a shared responsibility. Everyone has a responsibility towards it and Pakistan has a limited role in that, but what limited role we have, we are playing

that. We also have limited influence. So, expect Pakistan deliver on each account I think is not reasonable. Yes, we believe that it has to be intra-Afghan talks that is where all issues will be decided.” he said. Echoing the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's recent warning to India, The Pakistan envoy also said that the country will strike back against any military hostility by New Delhi. Zahid remarks came hours after Imran Khan warned India that his country will retaliation if military action is launched by India.

Business

2019 in full force as changes can impact the Property Price Growth Now two months in to 2019, we are beginning to see how the market is shaping up, with the effects of the lowered LVRs, lower interest rates and the looming capital gains tax, many are keeping a close eye on what is shaping up to be a transformative year for the market.

Here’s what you need to know:

mortgage rates. Auckland showed an improvement in affordability, up 0.8 per cent, despite being one of the hardest markets to enter, partly due to supply shortage and population growth. Recent improvements in incomes and interest rates are key factors that are helping affordability.

Interest Rates Remain at Record Lows

Capital Gains Tax Debate Rages On

A new report from ASB has revealed some much-welcomed news for those thinking about buying a new house in 2019, they report that interest rates continue to hit record lows. The report indicates this is a result of the low Official Cash Rate (OCR), and many are predicting the OCR will remain the same or may go lower later during the year.

Government’s Tax Working Group is expected to release their recommendations this month. Experts believe it is likely they will suggest some form of a capital gains tax. The proposed tax would see profits from the sale of assets and investments such as rental properties and shares be taxed alongside other "income" at people's marginal income tax rate.

Housing affordability also remains the same with a recent quarterly home affordability report indicating a 2.2 per cent decline nationwide in the period, as a 4.6 per cent lift in the median house sale price was enough to outweigh a 0.5 per cent increase in incomes and lower

Many see it as a necessary step to help improve housing affordability, a higher rate of home ownership, and control the heavy skew towards land-based investments. But those in opposing the idea claim that people’s property, and assets, shouldn’t be subject to capital

gains tax, and fear that the costs will be passed on to renters. With the labour government promising changes to the property market and housing affordability, many will be watching in the coming weeks to see if the proposed changes will indeed come into effect.

No Immediate Change from Lowered LVRs One of the biggest changes to hit the property market in 2019 has been the ease of mortgage lending restrictions by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. New Zealand Banks have more leverage to lend to those with less than 20% deposit for Owner Occupied Houses and also Reserve Bank has reduced deposit requirements for Investment property purchase to 30%. The latest data from CoreLogic has revealed that there has been no clear impact from the changes to LVR rules yet. Although the easing of LVR restrictions only came into affect in the new year, they were announced at the end of November, enabling banks to prepare

in any way they choose, with many predicting at that time that the big banks will act early and will result in a one-off lift in lending in December. But CoreLogic’s data has revealed that this didn’t eventuate, with high LVR lending still sticking well below the old, tighter speed limits. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand reported that mortgage lending activity rose again in December, following a trend from the past nine months. Total lending in 2018 was $64.3bn, up by 8.9% from the figure of $59.1bn in 2017. This shows that despite knowing about the forthcoming lowering LVR restrictions, banks were containing ‘risky’ interestonly lending, as the share of lending done on interest-only terms is holding below 30%. Government raises age cap of start-ups from 7 to 10 years

A business entity will now be considered a start-up up to 10 years from its date of incorporation or registration instead of the existing period of 7 years, the government said on Tuesday. "An entity will (also) continue to be recognised as a start-up if its turnover for any of the financial years since incorporation and registration has not exceeded Rs 100 crore in place of existing Rs 25 crore earlier," said an official statement. The relaxation of norms will make it easier for start-ups to thrive in the country. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu also cleared the proposal aimed at simplifying the

process of exemptions for startups under the crucial section 56(2) (viib) of the Income Tax Act. The consideration of shares received by eligible startups for shares issued or proposed to be issued by all investors will now be exempt up to an aggregate limit of Rs 25 crore.

However, this will exclude investments by non-residents, alternative investment funds category I registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India and listed companies having a net worth of Rs 100 crore or turnover of at least Rs 250 crore. "A start-up will be eligible for exemption

shares and securities; a motor vehicle, aircraft, yacht or any other mode of transport, the actual cost of which exceeds ten lakh rupees, other than that held by the startup; and jewellery other than that held by the startup as stock-intrade in the ordinary course of business," said the statement.

if it is a private limited company recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and is not investing in building or land appurtenant thereto; land or building, or both, not being a residential house; loans and advances, other than those extended in the ordinary course of business; capital contribution made to any other entity;

Start-ups will need to file a duly signed declaration with DPIIT for availing the exemption. The department will then forward it to the Central Board of Direct Taxes. Prabhu had set-up a small working group of angel investors and startup founders to look into issues following protests after the government's angel tax notification on January 16.

PULWAMA attack and its after effects

T

he whole nation is in a state of shock after the cowardly suicide bomber attack on a convoy of CRPF jawans who were travelling from Jammu to Kashmir. The 2,500 jawans were travelling in a convoy of 78 buses, as part of their regular troop movements. The attack is said to have been masterminded by the Pakistan based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed and its leader Masood Azhar as they already have claimed the responsibility of this attack. This is one the worst terror attack on security forces in recent history, killing security force jawans in such a large number. The common man on the street in anguished and outraged with yet another cowardly attack on the instruction of its perpetrators sitting across the border. The magnitude of the used 300 kgs of explosive was so deadly that the charred pieces of bodies and vehicle were found as far as up to a kilometre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the grieved family of martyr’s and to the nation that their sacrifice will not go in vain and those behind this heinous crime will pay for it. There is already a war cry undercurrent amongst the common man and the whole world, including USA & Russia, has condemned the attack and supported India and Narendra Modi for defending its borders. This is the charisma of Modi diplomacy that the entire world is rallying behind India in support and arguing to give a befitting reply. It’s a big slap on the face of those who used to make mockery of Modi’s foreign visits as this is what Modi has earned from these visits, made the whole world India's friend, including neighbouring countries. As India is currently in election mode but ever since this tragic incident has happened the biggest dilemma has been with the opposition parties. They don’t have many options at this juncture, except for supporting the government in any decision it takes, to respond the enemies. The public mood is very intensely pronational, and the patriotism is in the air. If any opposition parties today, make a silly mistake of touching the wrong nerve by criticising the government, they will be doomed for ever. So, either they are very cautious in their reaction or using controlled terminology. It is so heartening to see that the whole country can still stand united when it comes to a national cause, though this time it has come for a very heavy price. The Indian government has already taken some very strong decisions like ending the most favoured nation status (MFN) of Pakistan and removing the state security provided by the government to the separatist leaders of Kashmir. Some other very stern measures are in the pipeline including teaching a lasting lesson to the rogue neighbouring country and destroying the terrorist outfits functioning from across the border. The Indian Army has been given all the powers to take a decision to give befitting reply to any misadventure, now henceforth. A much bigger retaliatory action (than a surgical strike) is anticipated in coming weeks sensing the public mood. It seems like, behind the scene diplomatic initiatives and other logistics are getting finalised in full swing. The common man on the street does not want to spare the enemies, of the country & the peace, this time, as enough is enough for them. As a nation for how long we can just keep condemning these violent acts and doing nothing concrete to stop it for ever. Here in New Zealand, the government was caught napping, as they were too slow to issue any condemnation or paying condolences, which came almost two days after the dastardly attack. I think the current New Zealand government needs to learn a lesson or two in the international diplomacy as they are already running in rough waters with one of the world’s biggest economic power and its biggest trading partner, China and they surely can’t afford to offend another world power called India, just for being slack. - Yugal Parashar

Staying fit

may reduce risk of heart attack: Study According to a recent study, poor cardio respiratory fitness could increase the risk of a future heart attack, even if there are no symptoms of a lifestyle illness today. The results of the study have been published in 'European Heart Journal'. "We found a strong link between higher fitness levels and a lower risk of heart attack and angina pectoris over the nine years following the measurements that were taken," said researcher Bjarne Nes. "Even among people who seem to be healthy, the top 25 per cent of the fit individuals actually have only half as high a risk as the least fit 25 per cent," Nes added. Between 2006 and 2008, the researchers measured the cardio respiratory fitness of 4527 men and women who participated in the HUNT3 population-based health survey. None of the subjects had cardiovascular disease, cancer or high blood pressure, and most were considered to be at low risk of cardiovascular disease for the next ten years. Nevertheless, 147 of the participants experienced heart attacks or were diagnosed with angina pectoris by 2017. These diseases signal that the coronary arteries in the heart are narrowed or completely blocked. The researchers analysed the participants in groups based on their level of fitness in relation to others of the same age and gender. The risk proved to decline steadily as patient fitness increased. The correlation between fitness and cardiovascular risk also held after adjusting for other factors that differed between the most and least fit participants. Our body uses oxygen to drive metabolic processes that create energy for the muscles. Maximum oxygen absorption is simply the maximum amount of oxygen the body is able to absorb during physical activity. Heart, blood vessel and muscle functioning are all important for oxygen uptake. "Maximum oxygen uptake is the most precise measure of fitness," explained Bjarne Nes. "We know that patients with low oxygen uptake are at increased risk of premature death and cardiovascular disease. Our study shows that poorer fitness is an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease, even among healthy women and men who are relatively fit," added Nes. The study suggests that even a small increase in fitness can significantly improve health. For each increase of 3.5 fitness points, the risk of heart attack or angina decreases by 15 per cent. Even if you never get in such good shape that you can say you have optimal protection, the study shows that participants' risk was lower the more fit they were. "There is apparently no upper limit for training when it comes to the beneficial effects for the heart," wrote British Professor Sanjay Sharma. The researchers stated that we can't do much about our genes, but we can change our exercise habits. The researchers believe it may be useful for doctors to use fitness measurements when assessing their patients' health risks. "Fitness testing can motivate patients to get into better shape over time, and it focuses on health promotion rather than on illness. Although it may be inconvenient and difficult to measure oxygen uptake at the doctor's office, some simple and relatively accurate calculators exist that can provide a good estimate of fitness and disease risk," the researchers noted.

Remake and Sequels - Franchise of Success • Apurv Shukla

Hindi cinema witnesses its first multi starrer comedy of 2019 in Total Dhamaal, releasing on the 22nd of February. The third instalment in the successful comedy franchise Dhamaal, it reunites Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit on screen, 18 years after their last release together-Pukaar. Inder Kumar will be hoping for better box office results, after his last directorial Great Grand Masti was a box office disappointment. Javed Jaffrey and Anil Kapoor act in a same film, 34 years since Jaffrey’s debut in Meri Jung, which

released in 1985. Hollywood has had a long tradition of making sequels and franchises of successful films. Hindi cinema only started to be follow a similar pattern since the turn of the millennium. This trend began with director Raju Hirani carrying the Munna Bhai MBBS franchise forward, with Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006. What makes sequels and franchises an attractive option for filmmakers, is the brand value the originals of the films carry. The risks associated with them, as opposed to making a completely original film are less. In a highly competitive market where Hindi filmmakers compete not only with other Hindi films, but also regional and Hollywood movies to attract viewer patronage, any advantage they can avail is a bonus. Streaming platforms are also extremely popular, especially with the younger generation, and are proving a viable alternative to venturing out to the movies. With weekend business now determining the fate of most films, sequels have a higher probability of attracting footfalls due to the curiosity

value attached with them. Also, these films area considered a safer bet by satellite channels to acquire rights for, post their release – ensuring healthy returns for the filmmakers. The template for a franchise include a similar genre to the original, a recreated version of an old hit Hindi song, and some actors and technical team of the original. The most popular franchise in Hindi cinema has been-Golmaal. The series looks to tickle our funny bones. From a genuinely funny situational comedy in the first part, to a weak second film, through to last years’ horror comedy Golmaal Again- all have scored big at the ticket window. And when we talk about sequels, the biggest hit ever in Indian cinema- Bahubaali is the gold

standard on how to lavishly mount and engagingly present a fable of the by gone era, to audiences across the globe. Remakes of old classics started with

Farhaan Akhtar directing a film his father Javed Akhtar co-wrote –Don. The original Amitabh Bachchan starrer was remade with Shahrukh Khan in the lead role, and just the hype it generated ensured the film sailed safe at the box office. Other remakes like Agneepath and Ittefaq also did well. What also seems to have caught the eye of Hindi filmmakers is remaking South Indian films in Hindi. The trend was prevalent in the 80’s with Jeetendra acting in a lot of Southern re-creations. The idea started proving popular again after Salman Khan struck gold with his film Wanted, which was a remake of the successful Telugu film Pokiri. With strong story lines and over the top action sequences proving popular with audiences, there is a clamour to acquire remake rights of South Indian films amongst Hindi film producers. Critics say this trend is leading to a loss of creativity within the industry; though box office results tell a different story. But filmmakers also have to be careful when they make sequels and remakes of films. They should take elements from the originals which made them popular in the first place, but also embellish them with new and attractive ingredients to ensure viewers enjoy the films, and monotony does not set in.

Djokovic bags top honour at Laureus Awards World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award on Monday. The 31-year-old fought off competition from American basketball star LeBron James, Kenyan longdistance runner Eliud Kipchoge and French football player Kylian Mbappe to become the Sportsman of the Year. The Serbian bagged the honour for the fourth time having previously won the award in 2012, 2015 and 2016. After recovering from a long-time injury, Djokovic has had a dream come back to the court. He went to on to clinch the 2018 US Open title and 2019 Australian Open, along with returning to world number one ranking. “A Laureus Award is what every athlete wants to win, and this one is a huge honour for me. Being among so many

sporting greats here tonight… gives this award a special meaning for me,” WTA quoted Djokovic, as saying. “From July 2018 to November 2018, he maintained a 35-3 record and won four titles, including two Grand Slams (Wimbledon, US Open) and two ATP Masters 1000 events (Rolex Shanghai Masters, Western & Southern Open). Meanwhile, two times Grand Slam

champion Naomi Osaka was also also honoured at the Laurens Award as she won Breakthrough of the Year

Award for her phenomenal run in the 2018 season. Osaka beat Ana Carrasco (motor cycling), Sofia Goggia (skiing), Jakob Ingebrigtsen (athletics), Geraint Thomas (cycling) and Brianna Williams (athletics) to claim the award. “I want to give a huge thank you to the Laureus Academy for giving me the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year award. I want to thank my coaching staff and my family for being with me for these entire years,” Osaka said. “I also want to [acknowledge] the other nominees and thank the Laureus Academy for nominating me for such a prestigious award,” she added. While Gymnast Simone Biles won the World Sportswoman of the Year Award, golfer Tiger Woods was presented with Comeback of the Year Award.

Uncertainty looms over No cricketing ties with Pakistan until govt. nod: participation of Rajiv Shukla Pak players in shooting World Cup The participation of the Pakistani players in the forthcoming shooting World Cup, which is slated to be held in New Delhi, is hanging in uncertainty with the rifle associations of both the countries giving varying statement in the matter. National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) secretary Rajiv Bhatia on Tuesday confirmed that Pakistani players have been granted visa and that they would be coming to India to participate in the tournament. “They have informed me about their travel details. As of today, they have been granted the visa and the team is coming. We'll contact the High Commission to take an update,” Bhatia told. National Rifle Association

of Pakistan (NRAP) executive vice president Javed S lodhi, on the other hand, has stated that they are yet to get the Indian visa. “We have not got the Indian visa yet. We will be able to travel to India only if we get the visa on time,” Lodhi stated. Two Pakistani shooters, along with their coach, are scheduled to arrive on February 20 to take part in the prestigious tournament, according to the NRAI secretary. The Shooting World Cup 2019 is slated to be held from February 20 to 28 in New Delhi. The event holds significance as there are 16 Tokyo 2020 Olympics quota places up for grabs.

In the wake of Pulwama terror attack, premier League (IPL) chairman Rajiv Shukla made it clear that there is no possibility of bilateral cricket ties between India Pakistan unless they get government’s nod Shukla admitted to have faith in the concept of sports being above everything else but asserted that “if somebody is sponsoring terrorism” then it would obviously have an impact on sports. “Our position is very clear. Unless government gives us nod, we are not going to play with Pakistan. Sports should be above all these things but if somebody is sponsoring terrorism, obviously it will affect sports also,” Shukla told reporters.

When asked if India will play against Pakistan in the forthcoming World Cup, Shukla ducked the question saying, “That we can’t tell you know right now. World cup is far away. We will see what happens.” Following the attack, people from across

the country expressed anger and demanded action against Pakistan. The congress member said that the outrage is justified and asked Pakistan to stop supporting terrorism. “This is the outrage of the people which is reflecting in these ways. Obviously, people will react like this. Pakistan. should be vary of these things. They should not support terrorism. We have been saying this from day one. When our government was there, we gave tons of documents about their involvement. They should realise this,” Shukla said. Around 40 CRPF personnel were killed when a CRPF convoy, while moving from Jammu to Srinagar, was attacked by a suicide bomber in Pulwama on February 14. Pakistan based terror outfit Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Butter Chicken Serves 6

500g skinless, boneless chicken thighs in Tandoori Masala Marinade ( see last recipe) for at least 4 hours • 3tbsp canola oil • 1 onion pureed to a fine consistency • 1 tbsp crushed fresh garlic • 1 tbsp crushed fresh ginger • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 1 ½ tsp garam masala

There is a common misconception that Butter Chicken does not exist in India. This is not true. In India it is more commonly know as Murg Makhani (Chicken Buttery) or as we call it at Little India Murg Mumtaz. Sadly in New Zealand the taste of Butter Chicken has been Westernised as the majority of places that sell it add a lot of sugar to the recipe. This is certainly not the case at Little India. Note the chicken needs to be marinated in Tandoori Masala Marinade ( from the last recipe) for at last four hours before you start making the dish.

Preheat over to 220 degrees C fan bake. Line a baking try with baking paper and place chicken thighs evenly on the baking paper. Do not cover the chicken with excess marinade or it will not cook through fully. Place the baking tray in the oven and cook for 10 minuets. The edges of the chicken will char – this is a good sign that the chicken is fully cooked. Cut the chicken into 3cm x 3cm cubes. While chicken is cooking, heat oil in a large pan over a medium heat and add onions stirring continuously so it doesn’t stick to bottom of pan. Cook until almost brown. Add garlic and ginger and cook until softened and brown. Add turmeric, garam masala, salt and fenugreek and continue cooking until you start to smell the spice aromas.

Spiritual

Guruji on Sewa -very beautifully explained Q: I am not sure about what I want to do in life. I want to ask you, but I don’t even know what to ask and what exactly I want. I get bored doing anything in very little time. I find myself being very moody. I am not satisfied or happy doing anything. How can I live my life with this kind of mental state? Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You want comfort too much. Get out of your comfort zone. You are only thinking of your comfort and pleasure; that is when you get into this sort of stage or state. You are here to be useful to somebody else. You are here to do something useful to someone. How can you be bored? Even if you are bored, you have to do that, because what you do is useful to someone else. If you are self-centred, and you think, ‘If I like it only then I will do it’, then that is not seva. That won’t bring you satisfaction. Do you see what I’m saying? ‘I don’t like meeting people’, but you are

meeting people for your sake or for their sake? If you are meeting people for their sake, then your life is fulfilling.

a ride. So, do something that is good for others. I need so much of your time, your work. Don’t worry about whether you like it or not, just do it and see. Sometimes you don’t like doing things in the beginning, but later on, you will reap the fruit of that action. Any seva you do will always take you up; it will always bring you benefits, beyond your imagination. So, don’t underestimate that. Do you see what I am saying?

You may say, ‘Guruji, you can do this, but what about me? I cannot do this.’ At least do something! You don’t have to do what I am doing; at least do a portion of it, maybe ten percent or five percent. See, I am very free, but yet I am not free. Every day of mine is bound. Do you see what I am saying?

Otherwise, if you are doing everything to satisfy your own self, you will be bored, because nothing in the world can satisfy you. And you are lucky in a way that you are getting so bored so quickly. You are so lucky; you are the right person as a seeker, you have the right ingredients to grow because you get bored with all these material things. That is good.

You have all come here to be in satsang with me, I will say, ‘Oh, I don’t feel like being here. I feel moody. I want to go somewhere, to Shawinigan, TroisRiveres’, and I take a car and just walk away, and you are sitting here, waiting for Guruji, where is Guruji? I don’t want to do this, but I am doing it all the 365 days. I am answering the same questions; people are saying, ‘Will you find a husband for me?’ ‘Will you find a wife for me?’ or ‘Get me a job’, or do this, or do that, or take a picture with me, ‘You don’t care for me’, ‘You care for me’; all these stories. Do I feel bored? I

have been doing this for 30 years now; more than 30 years, even before The Art of Living too, for 40 years! I can’t say I want to go somewhere for

One very good thing with the kids these days is that they get bored with everything very soon, but instead of getting frustrated, they should move that whole energy in another direction of evolution, to go higher.
