Also known as Resurrection Sunday, Easter is celebrated on account of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by the Romans. It marks the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.

The day is usually spent in the presence of one’s family and friends. A traditional feast is prepared containing several meat delicacies, marking the end of the 40-day fasting period. Another well-known tradition is the gifting of Easter eggs, which symbolise fertility and new birth according to ancient scriptures. On Easter, many individuals take part in an Easter egg hunt comprising of eggs filled with chocolate or candy. As our paper goes to print, the long Easter weekend draws to an end but we did want to take this opportunity to wish our readers on easter.

Cover Story 

The Government focuses on “better days” for Kiwis this Easter The minimum wage goes up by 75 cents, from $15.75 an hour to $16.50. It’s the first of the Government’s several planned rises aimed at lifting the wage to $20 an hour by April 2021. In addition to the minimum wage, the ‘training’ and ‘starting-out’ wages have also risen to $13.20 an hour. Around 164,000 Kiwi workers and their families will be better off following the increase. Its all a part of this Government’s plan to improve pay and conditions for working Kiwi’s and ensuring those on lower incomes get to share in the Country’s economic prosperity.

The new PTA takes effect from 27 March 2018, when Adrian Orr starts his five-year term as Governor. The new PTA has to be signed under the existing provisions of the Reserve Bank Act 1989, which has price stability as the Reserve Bank’s primary objective. The agreement continues the requirement for the Reserve Bank to keep future annual CPI inflation between 1 and 3 percent over the medium-term, with a focus on keeping future inflation near the 2 percent mid-point.

Amidst speculation that this wage increase is likely to effect small business’s and may even initiate attrition in some companies, the move has come as a respite to the struggling populace. Though the Auckland Chamber of Commerce said businesses had accepted the wage rise was going to happen. But its chief executive Michael Barnett said he did not think the government had the right motivation for it.

The new PTA now also requires monetary policy to be conducted so that it contributes to supporting maximum levels of sustainable employment within the economy.

“They’ve done it on the basis that we have a vibrant economy - it’s the wrong way round to do it, what we should be doing is encouraging people to be better skilled so that they get a higher pay,” he said.

“The Reserve Bank Act is nearly 30 years old. While the single focus on price stability has generally served New Zealand well, there have been significant changes to the New Zealand economy and to monetary policy practices since it was enacted,” Grant Robertson said.

Mr Barnett said most businesses would have been prepared for the rise but the government’s plan to raise it to $20 an hour by 2021 would be problematic. The increase promised during the election campaign adds 75 cents per hour on the current wage. “This consistency gives employers and employees certainty, and minimises potential negative effects of increasing the minimum wage too sharply. New PTA requires Reserve Bank to consider employment alongside price stability mandate Earlier in the week New Zealand Finance Minister Grant Robertson and the incoming new Reserve Bank Governor Adrian Orr signed a new Policy Targets Agreement (PTA) setting out specific targets for maintaining price stability and a requirement for employment outcomes to be considered in the conduct of monetary policy.

The new focus on employment outcomes is an outcome of Phase 1 of the Review of the Reserve Bank Act 1989, which the Coalition Government announced in November 2017.

A Bill will be introduced to Parliament in the coming months to implement Cabinet’s decisions on recommendations from Phase 1 of the Review. As well as legislating for the dual mandate, this will include the creation of a committee for monetary policy decisions. “Currently, the Governor of the Reserve Bank has sole authority for monetary policy decisions under the Act. While clear institutional accountability was important for establishing the credibility of the inflation-targeting system when the Act was introduced, there has been greater recognition in recent decades of the benefits of committee decision-making structures,” Grant Robertson said. The Government has agreed a range of five to seven voting members for a Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) for decision-making. The majority of members will be Reserve Bank internal staff, and a minority will be external

members. The Reserve Bank Governor will be the chair.

“It is my intention that the first committee of seven members would have four internal, and three external members. Treasury will also have a non-voting observer on the MPC to provide information on fiscal policy,” - Grant Robertson The MPC is expected to begin operation in 2019 following passage of amending legislation. There will be a full Select Committee process for the legislation. Reserve Bank Governor-Designate, Adrian Orr, said that the PTA recognises the importance of monetary policy to the wellbeing of all New Zealanders. “The PTA appropriately retains the Reserve Bank’s focus on a price stability objective. The Bank’s annual consumer price inflation target remains at 1 to 3 percent, with the ongoing focus on the mid-point of 2 percent. “Price stability offers enduring benefits for New Zealanders’ living standards, especially for those on low and fixed incomes. It guards against the erosion of the value of our money and savings, and the misallocation of investment.”

Mr Orr said that the PTA also recognises the role of monetary policy in contributing to supporting maximum sustainable employment, as will be captured formally in an amendment Bill in coming months. “This PTA provides a bridge in that direction under the constraints of the current Act. The Reserve Bank’s flexible inflation targeting regime has long included employment and output variability in its deliberations on interest rate decisions. What this PTA does is make it an explicit expectation that the Bank accounts for that consideration transparently. Maximum sustainable employment is determined by a wide range of economic factors beyond monetary policy.” Mr Orr said that he welcomes the intention to use a monetary policy committee decision-making group, including both Bank staff and a minority of external members. “Legislating for this committee will give a strong basis for the Bank’s use of a committee decision-making process. Widening the committee to include external members also brings the benefit of diversity and challenge in our thinking, while enhancing the transparency of decision-making and flow of information.” Phase 2 of the Review is being scoped. It will focus on the Reserve Bank’s financial stability role and broader governance reform. Announcements on the final scope will be made by mid2018 and subsequent policy work will commence in the second half of 2018.

NZ Story Let’s get this done Honeymoon is now over After almost a decade under a National government we are now experiencing the inevitable adjustment period as a new government begins to assert itself and shape its work plan. All those who received preferential treatment from the previous Government will be suffering from withdrawal symptoms. National’s “old boy” networks have been well established throughout business communities and the individuals it placed on various influential boards and committees. It had an open door approach to big business lobbyists and investors with money and it’s willingness to limit or remove regulation was appreciated by them. The changing of the guard and dismantling National’s human infrastructure will be a messy business as many will object to losing their past influence and business opportunities. These people have the resources and media clout to make a lot of noise. The Labour led government has some huge challenges in progressing its agenda and to deal with multiple crises caused by years of underfunding. National had promised to downsize the civil service and attacked many ministries

and department with some gusto. Education, conservation and state housing were hit especially hard when massive cuts to funding saw essential institutional knowledge and expertise disappear. It takes a long time to replace human resources and rebuild capacity. As the honeymoon period comes to an end and the real work begins, this government is being criticised for the 39 reviews, working groups, advisory groups and investigations it is setting up, but it would be very concerning if this didn’t occur. What we have experienced recently is an erosion of democratic process and proper consultation. Donald Trump is displaying what the extreme of this looks like and it isn’t pretty. Getting expert advice and actually implementing recommendations is what responsible governance looks like and it can’t be rushed. All those civil servants with the knowledge and expertise necessary to turn things around again will have retired or given up in disgust. Those who have survived, or were employed during the last nine years, will have little idea of how things could be done differently. Rebuilding civil service capacity will need

to occur before embarking on major projects that will need strong leadership and comprehensive monitoring – sorry but the country cannot have another saga like the Christchurch rebuild. We also lack capacity in our workforce. We don’t have enough skilled workers in the construction industry to build the numbers of houses we need in the short term and as for our our largest construction firm – let us not even go there. We also lack the qualified teachers, medical staff and mental health and social workers to fill some caping employment holes. The government will be under a good deal of pressure from the public to fix things quickly. The 40,000 homeless need houses and much of the country’s crumbling, leaking infrastructure needs urgent attention. National, in opposition, will be gleefully highlighting lack of progress and perceived failures as if they had no part in creating the problem (and hoping voters have short memories). Another challenge will be how the three parties in government will manage their relationship and maintain their identity. The larger party in any government is

inclined to take credit for any successes achieved by one of their smaller partners, but also blame them for any failures. New Zealand First takes a popular approach to politics, so Shane Jone’s grandstanding against Air New Zealand’s withdrawal from the regions will win support and ruffle feathers at the same time.

transitioning fairly quickly to plumb private sector positions where they can use their inside knowledge of government to advance private profit and personal incomes.

The Green Party scraped into Parliament with only 1.3 percentage points to spare. Although it has gained some valuable ministerial positions, it too needs to establish points of difference. It will take time to establish the competency of its Ministers, so following through on policies around democratic and transparent governance has been at the forefront.

It will be good to remember when things become difficult and challenges overwhelm, that what we are currently dealing with now came out of nine years under a National Government. Most Ministers in this government genuinely want to make a positive difference for struggling New Zealanders and address our neglected environmental and conservation issues. None of these really moved National’s boats unless a profit could be measured and a business mate supported. The intent of the current government is very different.

It is interesting to follow where the retiring National Ministers go after stepping down from state service. Most are

It’s going to be a rocky road ahead, but it will be worth hanging on as we travel to a better place.

Bakshi urges Govt to change kirpan laws National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi has today lodged a Supplementary Order Paper (SOP) seeking to change the law around the use of kirpans so that baptized Sikh are able to carry kirpans in public and work places.

“The Crimes Amendment Bill contains many changes to outdated parts of the Crimes Act signalled by the previous Government, but a glaring omission for the Sikh community is the change to allow Sikhs to wear a kirpan in public,” Mr Bakshi says. “A kirpan is one of the five articles of the Sikh faith and holds tremendous significance. It is not used as an

offensive weapon, but solely as an important symbol of faith, which is why it should be allowed to be carried by Sikhs.

“I have long advocated for the Sikh community and National announced prior to the election that we would change the law for carrying kirpans. When I raised this amendment with Labour and the Greens, both indicated they would support it.

“New Zealand is a vibrant, multicultural country that values diversity. That’s why it is important that we stop criminalising Sikhs for carrying kirpans,” Mr Bakshi says. The SOP does not change the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules governing what may be carried on board a domestic flight. Decisions around prohibited items remain questions for the CAA. Media contact:

“It’s disappointing the Government has not chosen to include it in the Crimes Amendment Bill from the outset, but I am hopeful it will accept my SOP.

NZ Story Employment reforms will lead to business failures One of the Labour-led Government’s main priorities is to strengthen unions’ rights at the expensed of vulnerable workers and the health of New Zealand’s economy. In the process of strengthening those rights it is clear that the Labour party wants to ignore the 82.3 per cent of workers who do not belong to a union. The Government wants to bring in significant changes to employment laws without consulting the people who will be most affected. The previous National-led Government worked hard to consult employers and employees before formulating legislation that was positive not just for employers but employees and the New Zealand economy as well. Changes such as eliminating 90-day trial periods for all firms except small businesses will without doubt have a major impact on how businesses and employers choose to employ people. The 90 day trial period was rolled out nationwide in 2011 by New Zealand National Party to encourage all businesses, small and large, to grow their workforces and take a chance

on new workers and long-term unemployed people.

tens of thousands have successfully moved into the labour market.

ensures that businesses must negotiate new agreements in good faith.

The changes from Labour will make it much harder for young, unskilled and vulnerable workers to find employment and make it too risky for mid-sized employers to take a chance on a new worker with no track record of employment.

Larger businesses are often the ones who take on vulnerable workers, including people like ex-prisoners and people who are recovering from difficult health situations, because they have the training systems in place to work with them.

Labour will force businesses into negotiating the same employment contracts across multiple companies in an industry, if that is what the union wants. This means, for example, an employer cannot innovate by offering their workers extra rewards for doing new things in order to be more efficient than their competitors.

These changes will only reduce job opportunities and wage growth, especially for those vulnerable workers on the edges of the labour market. The law as it stands encourages all businesses, small and large, to grow their workforces and take a chance on new workers and long-term unemployed people. Since the 90 day trial has been in place we’ve seen a big move into the labour market from groups who have traditionally been left out. As a result our participation rate of adults in the labour market is the highest it’s ever been. The biggest single group of new workers is sole parents. We now have the lowest number of sole parents relying on a welfare benefit since the late 80s because

We want every New Zealander to have a chance to work. Valuable workers are like gold to a business but many of them just need the opportunity to prove themselves. New Zealand currently has one of the highest performing economies in the world for job growth and the most important thing to a worker is that there’s someone who’s prepared to take a chance and give them a job. We know that the employment settings we have created 10,000 new jobs a month for the last two years. And making changes like reforming the 90 day trial will only slow that growth.

In the end, it will be families who pay the price for these changes through higher prices for the stuff they buy, lower pay packets due to poor productivity, or not having new goods or services to buy that they want. I am not sure if this is what we New Zealanders signed up for in the secret coalition agreement between Labour and its coalition partners. Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi (MP)

The new laws also impose extra requirements on businesses, in order to advantage unions, when negotiating agreements. The existing law already

Q&A with NZ People’s Party My name is Mehma Siddiqui and I study at Wellington Girl’s college. I have taken Sociology as a subject and we are assigned an internal study that is focused on social issues. My social issue is “Expensive housing in Wellington”. I would like to ask a member of the NZ peoples party about their thoughts/ perspective on expensive housing, and what actions they are taking in relation to their perceptive.

If you believe that expensive housing is unfair on first home buyers and unfair on people who don’t earn enough income, what actions are you taking reduce expensive housing? NZPP has taken a huge initiative on addressing the housing concerns for the people of New Zealand in the previous elections. Here’s an excerpt addressing the housing related issues from the party No population has been left with more uncertainty about what their future holds than, first home buyers and middleincome families. In New Zealand, we are fortunate to be part of a community that has long championed immigrant’s rights

and celebrates the contributions they make. As the People’s Party Secretary Anil formulates the best way forward to protect and defend the rights of first home buyers and immigrants, outlining and giving shape to strong housing policies, that would help to provide vulnerable families with a measure of economic security and peace of mind is the need of the moment. Given New Zealand’s efforts to curb homelessness, it seems clear that the current housing policy runs counter to the economy’s goal. It is also putting many New Zealand citizen children at greater risk of homelessness because their parents happen to be unable to cough up the large chunks of deposit money. They are penalised for their parents’ low income or immigration status. While this is at least in part due to present government policy, there is a step the ruling government could take to reduce the burden of this penalty. The New Zealand People’s Party has decided to come up with a policy goal that will help get more New Zealander’s into their first home. The first home buyers will receive $100,000 interest

free first home deposit loan for 5 years for living and buying in Auckland and $60,000 for all other first home buyers. This would facilitate people to pay the difference between the mixed-status, pro-rated rent and the statutory means for deposits and paying back their loans interest free in a period of 5 years thereby lessening their risk of homelessness and allowing them to maintain stable housing. Anil also reiterates the fact that once the political process are pursued relentlessly by the both the Ministers and the Government of the country, homelessness can definitely come to an end. It needs a more structured approach with clearly defined end goals. For any questions or enquiries, kindly write in to NZPP, General Secretary Anil Sharma at [email protected]

Legal Advice Ask Naveen Goel

Readers can have their questions on any aspect of Indian law answered by Naveen Goel, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court, who is an Indian qualified lawyer with over 28 years’ experience. Naveen practices in New Delhi but also spends a considerable time in Auckland. Please note that the answers given are intended to be only in the nature of general guidance for the readers and readers should take legal advice specific to the detailed facts pertaining to them from Indian qualified lawyers before acting further. Queries may be sent to [email protected] ( Sorry, no Immigration or NZ law queries)

Ramesh from North Shore asks: I have a house in India which I am looking at selling. What will be my tax liability in India and how can I bring the money to New Zealand? In India, you will pay a capital gains tax which is your applicable income tax rate slab ( max 33%, plus some surcharges), if you sell the house within 3 years of purchasing. If you sell after 3 years of purchase you pay only 20% tax (plus some surcharges) on the profit you make based on the indexed value (calculated on basis of a published index) of the cost of purchase of the house. As New Zealand does not have a capital gains tax ( as yet), you should not be liable for any tax on the sale in NZ ( unless buying and selling houses is your business in which case, you could claim offset of the taxes paid in India). Under Indian foreign exchange regulation, you would be allowed to remit to NZ an amount of up to US$ 1 million from your NRO account after a Chartered Accountant certifies that Indian income tax has been paid on the proceeds from the sale of the house. Gurpreet from Papatoetoe asks: I inherited some property from my mother, which is rented out and I get about Rs 30,000 per month as rent, but the money remains in India and I pay tax on this in India. Am I liable to pay tax in NZ on this income? If you are a NZ tax resident, you are liable to pay tax in NZ on your global income. Under a double taxation avoidance agreement between India and New Zealand, you can claim credit for the taxes paid in India. I would advise you to consult an accountant or tax consultant in NZ.

Ahmed from Manukau asks: I exported some goods to a person I knew in India. He kept promising to pay for goods and would keep on asking for more time. Now he has stopped replying to my emails. What can I do? I presume you would have some sort of a written contract. Please see if that contains any clause for settling of disputes by arbitration. If it does, then you will have to go to that forum specified and file a claim as per the procedure of that forum. If not, you will have to file a claim in India ( in the city where that person lives or does business). Please note that you need to file the claim within 3 years of the date on which the payment was due to you. If the person whom you supplied the goods to, entered into a contract with you through a company, and the amount owed is more than Rs 1 lakh, you could also file a proceeding in India for winding up the company, which is sometimes better than filing a civil case. In practical terms, if the amount due is not significant ( say less than NZD 1520000) it may not be worth contesting as the costs of contesting this case in India from here , might be more than what you might eventually recover. Anish from Mt Roskill asks: I am a New Zealand citizen and I got married to a girl in India some years ago. We had some problems and she went back to India last year and I have received a notice from an Indian court that she has filed for divorce. What should I do? This is a complicated matter and you should also seek advice from a NZ lawyer. However, if the marriage took place in India, then Indian courts would have jurisdiction to grant a divorce and the NZ courts would, ordinarily, recognise a divorce granted by an Indian Court. You should contest the proceedings in India and also consult a NZ lawyer whether you can file any proceedings in NZ. There will be related issues such as sharing of property, alimony, custody of children etc. and your wife may also file these proceedings in India. A lot would depend on the specific facts of the matter, as to where the property is, age of children and where the children are etc.

Vishal from St. Lukes asks: Some years ago, I had booked a flat with one builder in NOIDA and had been paying the instalments for several years. Some time back I found out that the development work had stopped so I stopped paying my instalments. Now, builder is demanding instalments and interest and is threating to cancel my allotment if I don’t pay it. What can I do? This is a common issue which a lot of NRI’s are facing. First, check whether the matter is within limitation ( i.e there is some acknowledgement of amounts paid by you to builder within the last 3 years). You could either have a case filed before the Consumer Forum in NOIDA ( for which you might will need to engage a lawyer, as it would be difficulty for you to contest the case yourselves form here). You could also file a complaint before the Real Estate Regulatory Authority for NOIDA, under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act. You can check the website for UP http://up-rera.in/index for more information. But please make sure you act fast. Satya from Auckland City asks: I am in the IT business and want to set up a company in India to do my outsourcing work. How do I do that? Do I need to go to India for that? Indi now has a much more open regime for foreign investment and most types of foreign investments are under what is known as the “automatic route” which means you don’t need prior permission from the government. Outsourcing of IT business would be under the automatic route. You can set up a company from NZ itself and don’t need to go to India. You will need to apply for a DIN number online (http://www.mca.gov.in/ MinistryV2/applyfordin.html) and most of the steps for company incorporation can be done online on www.mca.gov. in but physical copies of documents need to be sent to the company affairs department. You can do this yourself, but it might be easier to engage a lawyer/company secretary/chartered accountant in Indi to do this for you.

India Mann Ki Baat:

PM Modi hails hardworking citizens, thanks them for selfless service Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked the ordinary hard-working Indians for inspiring many through their selfless service and mentioned the names of some of such personalities in his monthly radio address, ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister praised one doctor, Ajit Mohan Chaudhary, from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, who has been treating patients for free for past one month. Prime Minister Modi said, “When I heard the story of Kanpur based Dr. Ajit Mohan Choudhary, of how he visits the underprivileged on footpaths and offers free medicines to them, it gives one an opportunity to feel the sense of brotherhood that prevails in the country.” Prime Minister Modi also lauded Ahmed Ali, a rickshaw-puller from Karimgunj district of Assam, who has established nine schools in his area. “When I read in letters sent by you that how a rickshaw puller from Assam’s Karimganj, Ahmed Ali built nine schools

for poor children, it gives me a glimpse into the nation’s willpower,” the Prime Minister said in his 42nd monthly radio address to the nation. Prime Minister Modi also hailed a taxi driver, Mohammad Saidul Laskar, who had built an affordable hospital at Punri village nearly 40 kilometres from Kolkata, after Saidul’s only sister Marufa Khatoon died a few years ago since they could not afford treatment in a hospital.

“13 years ago, Kolkata’s cab driver Saidul Laskar lost his sister as she could not get the medical facility in time. He then decided to build a hospital so that no poor ever die due to an absence of medical facility. In this mission, Saidul sold jewellery from his home and collected money through donations. His customers also donated to him generously. After 12 years, Saidul built a 30-bed hospital in Punri village near Kolkata. This is the power of new India,” he said.

launches Comprehensive financial management system Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, on Monday launched Comprehensive financial management system (CFMS). Staff of different departments of the State government will be provided training to prepare bills, audit and other modalities under this new system. Operating on SAP (Systems, Applications, Products in data processing), which has developed such a program for the government for the first time, CFMS will be helpful in Real Time Governance, bringing transparency in the system along with better accountability and efficiency. While addressing the program, the Chief Minister said, “I appreciate all those who worked for months together for developing CFMS. This is a complicated system. SAP developed the best system for all the government departments. I thank IT advisor J Satyanarayana for achieving this feat.” “Adopting technology for government services is what we achieved. This is the single source of truth. Revenue expenditure

and income will be recorded in real time through this system,” he added. The Chief Minister said he is working for a double-digit growth rate of GDP for the next two decades, which will flourish the state.

“This project was in doldrums when NIIT was working. Then we tied up with SAP, I am confident that their new product can be highly effective in real time governance,” he concluded. SAP India head Debdeep Sengupta, SBI GM Deshpandey, higher level bureaucrats and officials graced the occasion.

Mentioning an example of women power, the Prime Minister said, “In Uttar Pradesh, when a woman builds 125 toilets after overcoming steep challenges, inspiring women to exercise their due rights, it gives us a glimpse of ‘Matri-Shakti’, the power of maternal love and caring.” Prime Minister said innumerable shining examples like these are the hallmark of our country.

Business Why IRAN is the best country to invest in the Middle East right NOW? Iran - a country of great history, similar to many others like India and China, with a long and interesting past, with rulers like Cyrus, Xerxes, and Darius who ruled from 750 BC. The Silk Route passed through here to reach Africa and Europe resulting in huge commerce and trade. Something that can be seen today, when you visit the palaces of kings who were rich beyond comprehension. It is also a country of great scientists, scholars, poets and writers with works like Shahnama (Tale of Kings) by Firdausi, considered the best books ever written in Farsi (Persian). An adaptation of sorts is The Arabian Nights, which many Persians will vow is a rip-off of the original works written centuries before. There are many innovations in mathematics, medicine, astronomy and chemistry that have come from Persia. Iran ranks as the third biggest economy in the Middle East, with sanctions being imposed on them for the past few decades from the USA and their allied nations. They suffered through a decade-long war with Saddam Hussain which depleted much of their resources. Their image in the world is highly biased, thanks to their political position against USA, Saudi Arabia, and Israel - all of which are big influencers in the movement of finance and trade in the region, and their control of media. The banking and finance sector in Iran is not as developed and integrated with the Western world, based on these limitations being imposed on them. For example, credit cards like VISA, MasterCard and Amex are hardly used there, and the country works on cash and debit, so access to capital is highly limited and controlled. In the past few months, their strong political stance on Iraq and Syria has raised tensions as well.

Oil and Minerals: The mining sector might have started to cool down in Australia, but it has hardly even warmed up in Iran. With the largest oil reserves in the world, Iran has one of the strongest positions on OPEC and is already starting to win a large market share of the global petroleum and petrochemical trade. Plus, they have unlimited natural reserves of minerals which are not available to countries like UAE, Qatar, Iraq and others. Economic Alliance with India, China & Russia: By forming a new alliance trade partnership with India, China, and Russia, Iran has access to over 2.5B of the world’s 6B population. The production and manufacturing facilities in Iran are some of the most advanced in the Middle East, especially in carpets, fruits and nuts, saffron, wool, leather and so on. Educated and Young: With a local population of 80M, Iran has a highly evolved and sustainable local economy. Most of the population in Iran is Youth (aged 25 and below) which is a huge advantage compared to most countries in the world. Also, they are the most educated people in the world, with the highest PHDs per capita anywhere in the world. This includes women, who are not only highly educated but strong influence in the parliament, politics, and business. Commercial & Residential Property & Infrastructure: With a renewed economy mainly of the increased demand for Petroleum and Minerals, and their trade with Russia, India, and China, there is a multi-billion-dollar investment into the development of infrastructure, trade parks, commercial and residential property, as well as hotels for tourism. Australia and New Zealand can benefit by exporting expertise and knowledge to

the region and score some multi-million dollar contracts. The re-election of Rouhani - a liberal leader by a massive majority: Recent elections in Iran, led to the re-election of Rouhani as the President of Iran. He has made a massive change in the political landscape by representing the vision of Iran as a liberal, moderate and collaborative country compared to the damages done by Ahmadinejad in the past. This means stability and consistency in the policies and is a major positive to consider. The collection output of that is that the foreign currency exchange rate of the Riyal has improved, employment has improved, and foreign investment initiatives are being rewarded through Free Trade Zones established in Iran to help exporters from other countries wanting to do business in Iran.

are also other product categories that are highly profitable through the right channels. With a young population, there is potential to invest in Franchised Restaurants, Automotive and Sports as there’s a huge demand for entertainment and leisure. Where AZRIMEXPORT comes into play? Having signed an exclusive MOU with Trade Group 777 and the Guilan Business Association, AzrimExport will gain access to local and international networks that are investing and exporting into and from Iran. We currently have over 100 projects in Iran that can be considered for partnership and investment, and the businesses we are interested in talking to have to do a turnover of over $10M with a potential to invest at least $1M USD. The ROI is much higher than that in Australia, as these are government-backed initiatives with guaranteed dividends over 5 to 20 years.

This will continue to improve, as Iran has recognized their potential and are now making things easy for people to visit them and consider investing in the trade to either manufacture or supply to their economy. They have far fewer restrictions and better profit margins compared to UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar when you take all things into perspective. Key Sectors worth considering: Education and training where students can come to study in Australia, or professionals from here can be sent to train organisations in Iran; Aggrotech where leading experts in Agriculture, Farming, Livestock, and Fisheries can work with leading bodies in Iran to advise them on how to improve and sustain their local resources; Petroleum is a huge demand commodity here with refined petroleum being the most imported product from Iran; Wool, Wood, Dairy, and Fruits-Veggies

Renowned Bollywood playback singer and wife of Bollywood Filmmaker and social activist Mr. Ashok Pandit captivated the audience with her soulful rendering of devotional songs & Bhajans at the Bharatiya Mandir on Sunday 25th June. Two very famous and well-known talents of the Indian community who ably assisted the singer were Mr. Vasant Madhur on tabla and Mr. Hemant Thakkar on the keyboard. The occasion was of the festival of Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Ram and people who visited the temple on this auspicious day, were surprised and excited to see Neerja in their midst. Ms. Neerja was also very impressed and happy to see such a massive crowd of the Indian community, away from India on a day of religious significance.

Ms. Neerja and her husband were in the country to take part in the “India Rising” forum organized by Indian Association of New Zealand on Sunday 18th March at Vodafone centre. All the office-bearers of the association were also present in the programme, which included Mr. Suresh Ramji, Mr. Veer Khar, Roy Kaunds, and Ram Lingam. Later Bharatiya Mandir Management Committee welcomed the guests and The members of the IANZ by presenting them Mandir Upvastra. Spirituality Belief in One GOD is the cornerstone of all religions Saints of all ages and countries have sung the same one song. They have all preached the same one Truth. They have all emphasized the unity of God and brotherhood of man. Their message has always been the same as one of love, compassion and humility. They come not to gain suzerainty and dominion over lands. They come to unite, not to divide. Their mission is to take the longing souls back to their home, not to take them further astray. Their life is one of labour and love, work and worship, service and sacrifice. They are entirely wedded to poverty, purity and spirituality. There are different roads leading to the same destination. The soul of religion is, indeed, one; only it is encased in a multitude of forms. The essence of the Truth, the basis of Spirituality, underlying them all, is one and the same. The Saints, the lovers of the Lord, turn away from the outer religion of form and ceremony to the inner religion of the heart. They preach pure and untarnished spirituality, for while the outer differences tend to divide us, the inner silver cord assuredly makes us

all one. Truth is one but we see it from different levels.’ Only deep understanding of this underlying oneness will enable us to meet on one platform and bring peace to the intolerant and strife - torn world. No body denies that God is one; that He has created the world; that we can gain salvation by meeting the Lord, the Creator, alone; that the Lord resides not in forest retreats and mountain caves, but in the inner recesses of the heart. They all admit that mind is the veil between man and God ; that He can be seen only when this blinding screen is removed. Mind revels in pleasures of the senses. It can be weaned from them only when it gets something supremely superior, sweeter and nobler. It is here that the Supreme Giver bestows His gifts; where flows the ambrosial nectar and it is to this point that the body consciousness has to be retraced, retained and put in the orbit of ever- resounding immanent power. Then shall we gain God- realization.

The Saints do not make cowards of men. They explicitly enjoin upon all who come under their influence to do their duty by their parents, family and children, friends and relations, the poor and the downcast. Those who love the Creator love His creation too. The Master without any reservation or any preconditions. If the disciple

is totally dedicated and surrenders to the Master, then the success is assured.

Lord Buddha has said,” Ahinsa Parmo dharma”. Nonviolence is the Supreme Religion.

Regular Satsang or company of the Saints or Truth and noble people is also must on this path. Needless to say love and compassion for all living beings including animals, birds and humans without any distinction of race, cast, creed or Nationality is a must. As

God says,” if you walk one steps towards me, I would run many steps towards you.”Since He is more anxious to meet us then we are, let us make a strong resolve to take first step towards Him to achieve immorality. by Chander Satija

The 25 years of glorious journey of

Bharatiya Mandir It all started, when with the grace of GOD Mr. Roshan Lal Nauharia mooted the idea of building a Mandir for the Hindu community in New Zealand. There was no designated place for the Hindu community where they could worship and perform their religious practices. Some very committed and devoted people like late Mr. Ramesh Bhai Patel were always in the forefront for their services to the Hindu community. Mr. Patel spent his life time to keep the Hindu community spiritually alive and provided them the support and service in times of sorrows and happiness. He was a family elder for everyone and a Pandit for the community. He performed prayers and carried out Hindu Rituals for others and always dreamt of building a Mandir. The year was 1986, a group of Auckland based Hindu community members led by Mr. Nauharia sat to discuss the need of having a Hindu Mandir in New Zealand. On Sunday the 29th June,

Under the auspices of Auckland Indian Association, a public meeting was held at Gandhi Hall, and Bharatiya Mandir (Indian Temple) was incorporated. It was announced that two residential properties at 252-254 Balmoral Road were identified by Mr. Roshan Lal Nauharia for the Mandir. It was a matter of joy and celebration. Although, there was a place for social and cultural activities, but the Hindus did not have a proper Temple. After setting up a separate committee, all the founding members made the initial contribution of $2000 each. At the meeting, Mr.

Ramesh Patel, Mr. Shiv Lal Masters, and Mr. Prabhu Kanji were appointed to further report on the suitability of these sites for the Mandir. Unfortunately, Mr. Ramesh Patel passed away in 1989. Late Mr. Ramesh Bhai Patel had been working for the community since 1950. He also had very good knowledge of Hindu scriptures, rites, and rituals. He was responsible for performing marriages and other rites for the

community. his social work for the community was greatly commended, and he was awarded MBE, for his services, the highest award to any Indian to date in New Zealand. To be continued...

‘He came, he saw, he putted.’ The whirlwind three-day visit of former US President Barack Obama may not be of much political or historical significance, but the euphoria and public interest it created only prove he still is as popular man as he was when in office. As a matter of fact, this was the first visit by even a former US President to New Zealand after President Bill Clinton’s 1999 visit. There were a lot of talks about why tax payers money be spent on this kind of visit which do not have any direct gain to the country. This kind of corporate branding exercise can not be measured in sheer monetary terms. Sure, there may not be any direct gain from his visit, but New Zealand has received priceless publicity as a top favoured destination on the world map. It was ridiculous though, not many saw him. Media was kept miles away and was only reduced to interviewing common people about how they’d tried and largely failed to catch a glimpse of him. Though, those who were lucky to meet him even for a moment all had to say one thing in common that ‘He was very gracious and inspiring’. Well, according to Alex Jones, the King of conspiracy theories and if we have to believe his bizarre claimes, Obama visited New Zealand to prepare a bolthole for himself in the event of a Nuclear Armageddon or an outbreak of serious civil strife in the US. I think we can draw our own conclusions as to whether Barak Obama came to New Zealand to prepare a getaway bunker, or whether he just wanted to avoid them while playing a round of golf with his old mate John Key at the Kauri Cliff Resort. And last week, while kiwis were basking in the glory of an inning & 49 runs win over England in the historic pink ball Day- Night test match at Eden park there counter part on the other side of the ditch once again shamed the game of cricket with their dirty trick. They shamed the game of cricket, their country and millions of cricket lovers across the globe with the ball tempering in the third test match against South Africa at Newlands. Aussies are quite notorious for their nonsporting behavior on and off the field especially when comes to cricket. All the cricket playing countries have always faced the name calling, sledding and intimidating behavior from the Aussie players for a long time and it was only natural for them to try to camouflage their dirty tricks like ball tampering under the disguise of being the best cricketing team in the world. While the main accused Cameron Bancroft, who carried the cheating was given nine months ban by Cricket Australia Captain Steve Smith and Vice Captain David Warner, have received a 12 months ban each for “cheating” and “damaging” the sport during the defeat against South Africa. Cricket Australia chief executive, James Sutherland says” Clearly this has caused a huge amount of damage for the game of cricket as a whole Later in a press brief, a tearful and seemingly remorseful Captain Steve Smith apologized to the nation and to his fans for their blunder, claiming that he is going to live rest of his life with this guilt and pleaded for forgiveness. This is Australia’s new reality. Shamed, scorned and silenced, now its cricket must speak for itself. - Yugal Parashar

Hanuman Janmotsava celebrated at Bharatiya Mandir Hanuman Janamotsav was celebrated with a lot of fervor and devotion at Bharatiya Mandir on Saturday 25th March. At least 700-800 people packed the Bharatiya Mandir main hall where birthday celebrations of Lord Hanuman took place. The programme started at nine o’clock in the morning after the morning aarti. Shri Hanuman Janamotsava Pooja, Sunder Kaand Paath, and other devotional bhajans were followed by Janamotsava aarti. Lord Hanuman was offered a big laddoo of 51 kg. on this occasion which was later distributed to the devotees. Both the priests of the Mandir Acharya Upendra Bhai Joshi and Pandit Govind Prasad Sharma carried out the whole programme very diligently and efficiently. Its is believed that Lord Hanuman is only one of the seven incarnations of God who are still alive and present in today’s Kaliyug. Devotees also took part in the recitation of Sunder Kaan Path and other bhajans and aarti. Being an Easter long weekend and a beautiful

bright day, brought lots of people to Mandir with the family and friends. All the devotees and visitors to the temple were later served the Mahaprasad and sweets. The news from all other temples across the town were coming of the same enthusiasm and festivities to celebrate the Hanuman Janamotsava.

ANZ Bank and NZ Police for Gandhi Nivas On Friday, 23 March 2018 – One of the quiet streets in Papakura, Auckland, was witnessing a flurry of activity in the new community house being set up for the Gandhi Nivas project. In true community spirit, ANZ’s Indian Networking Group (ING) in conjunction with the NZ Police (Counties Manukau, South Auckland), rolled up their sleeves to lend a hand to spruce up South Auckland’s Gandhi Nivas, by tidying the backyard of unwanted vegetation and spring cleaning both inside and outside the community house, in a collaborative effort, to take it one step closer to opening the facility in the next few weeks. Upon entering, we witnessed a swarm of volunteers with mops, dusters, vacuum cleaners, and the team outdoors with garden equipment, water blasters in hand, singing, smiling and happily buzzing around doing their bit. They were all busy cleaning and clearing the spacious home that will soon witness a lot of services including counselling and community project work for the men who are involved in family domestic violence. The ANZ Bank’s Indian Networking Group wanted to give back to the community and approached entrepreneur and humanitarian Ranjna Patel, to find out about possible opportunities where they could support initiatives within the Indian community. Hetal Jani, Indian Networking Group Lead who was at the helm of affairs explained to us, “The Bank’s ING team was founded over a decade ago by staff from different areas of the Bank, both from frontline and head office. One of

Ranjna Patel, Hetal Jani, Rani Nalam, Dipesh Marwah, Alpa Maniar, Dinesh Sami, Sunny Doda and Sylvia Chandra.

the primary objectives of our Group is to build and continue to promote awareness in the local community. This is the third year running where the ING team has contributed our volunteer day to give back to the Indian community and we were thrilled when we spoke with Ranjna, who invited us to help out with a social cause for our ‘ANZ in the Community’ volunteer day. One could see the joy on the entire team’s faces who were beaming with happiness working on this project. Rani Nalam said that they were deeply indebted to the entire team who has been a part of this cause and they look forward to continuously keep doing their bit for these social causes for the greater good of the community. Ranjna Patel is the Founder and Director of NZ’s largest independent primary Healthcare group: Nirvana Health Group. In addition to her day job, she is also involved in social causes for the welfare of people in the community. One such example is the first official project of Nirvana Foundation - Gandhi Nivas, which is a programme providing emergency housing, counselling and referral services for men who have either been issued with a Police Safety Order or are otherwise involved in police matters related to family violence. It’s a partnership between Nirvana Health Care Group, NZ Police Counties Manukau, Sahaayta Counselling and Social Support and the Papakura Gandhi Novas and is due to open in a few weeks. Jani said, “Volunteering as part of the #ANZinthecommunity campaign enables us to demonstrate our commitment locally; we are proud of

our cultural heritage and that we can give back to our own community. It was a truly rewarding day, with collaboration at its best, working hand in hand with the Sahaayta team and NZ Police. Thank you Ranjna for giving us the opportunity to help out in the community. The team feels an innate sense of gratitude to have

been a small part of this great social cause, to make a difference to peoples’ lives in the community.” Correction : in 2013 in a population of 5 to 6 percent Indians in New Zealand, 4/14 and not 4/5 deaths were reported which is a shocking 29 percent.

Par Excellence

An interview with Hotelier Laxmi and Sudesh Jhunjhunwala What a moment. We had the privilege of interviewing non-other than Hoteliers Laxmi and Sudesh Jhunjhunwala. The couple are true professionals. They squeezed in time at a very short notice and flew out the same night from New Zealand after the interview was completed. This couple is always likened to the international hospitality pioneers as they are among the early Indian investors to start a chain of luxury hotels in New Zealand. Only a few days prior, Yugal, our editor had contacted the founder of Sudima Hotels, Sudesh Jhunjhunwala for an exclusive interview for The Indian News. Even though both Sudesh and his wife Laxmi were attending an important event in India, they immediately responded by suggesting we come over for lunch. Our passion for interviewing people who have made a difference and have been high achievers, and yet have managed to maintain a low profile prompted us to immediately accept the invitation. But we had to suggest that we do lunch at leisure later and instead meet for a quick chat in the morning before they leave for India. We decided that the perfect venue for this interview would be their corporate office in the heart of Auckland city and they promptly booked us in. The setting would provide the perfect backdrop to allow us to witness the scale of their

giant network in action and it was impressive indeed. As if by clock-work, the staff were emerging from the aisles, phones were buzzing as bookings were being centrally managed and the office was completely high on energy. Sudesh true to his style and a great example of hospitality, welcomed us at the entrance, despite the steady drizzle outside. A truly chivalrous gentleman, he held the door open and walked us into the office, with a handshake. A quick exchange of pleasantries and he quickly disappeared. Almost instantly as if by clockwork, his wife Laxmi fluttered in, with her simple yet stunning, demure smile and of course radiating her much

talked about warmth, charm and grace. Sudesh came back to join us with his special hand made coffee and served it himself. The couple charmed us instantly. Some people don’t cease to amaze at every step. And as they say, chivalry – it is in your blood. As we settled into the interview with our cuppas in the adjacent more quiet space, we asked them questions about their journey into New Zealand, their thoughts on function versus form, their most challenging moments, the complications around not having the comfort of being with their joint family, we understood one thing and that was that they were purely destined to make this beautiful land of the big white cloud

their home. From the day they chose to come here for their honeymoon instead of the standard Switzerland or any other popular European destinations, in the year 1985, the future for them was already subconsciously being shaped. Laxmi had fallen in love but this time it was with New Zealand. Their journey began when they moved from the vibrant city of Hong Kong to New Zealand in 2001. Sudima hotels, a close-knit family hotel chain decided to start investing in commercial businesses in New Zealand in 1990. Their portfolios were very large in Hong Kong and when it was decided that one of the brothers must move to New Zealand to manage this new conglomerate of hotels, they were the chosen ones. Quite literally, as nature had decided to bless them and make the wish of this beautiful young bride come true by leaving no other choice for them than moving to New Zealand. Coming from a house full of people to New Zealand where they did not know anyone was the toughest part. Maybe that is the reason they constantly mentioned that family comes first for both. As a young home maker like most other women who come to this country, she had to endure the challenges of cooking, cleaning, and managing the kids while her husband was away working. Sometimes she would feel

that her biggest struggle was the empty house with no one to talk to. Settling down in school was also hard for the three girls. But being a positive woman and her faith in the journey that lead her to this destination, she continued with great faith in a higher purpose.

She is a very spiritual person who has developed great faith in Brahmrishi Swami Guruvanand ji. She is an active follower, involved in Guruji’s charity and community projects in South India. Even Sudesh’s grandmother who was a great visionary, in a small town of Bhiwani had started her charity school for girls which is still running today and is being managed by the family.

He explained that Sudima in Auckland is the one closest to their heart as they built it from scratch with a lot of sustainable features. Since it all started with them right from buying land to designing the features, they wanted to begin with the basics like “How sustainable is our building going to be, how are we going to recycle, how can we use lights or LED bulbs and overall consume less energy to reduce the carbon imprints and give back to Mother Earth”.

Sudesh, on the other hand is a businessman with an acute acumen and an eye for detail. As a responsible

Theirs was the first business to start using sustainable energy, efficient systems of air conditioning, and the

Hotels use a lot of energy and they also create lots of waste. For the “people” part, it is fitting to be socially responsible and give back to the community. As we are all aware, sustainability is about the triple bottom line – profit, people, planet. It’s not just about delivering profits but also about mitigating our very big carbon footprint.

Eventually as the children grew up, she got time to do things for herself. Painting overtook her soul, became her joy and she enrolled in the evening classes at AUT university and completed her three-year visual arts course in 2010. She encompassed all her energy and converted it into something most meaningful instead of allowing herself to harbour any negative thoughts. Her art now adorns all the largest spaces across her hotels and offices. She has a website where she has showcased her entire journey. A few words from her home page –

As we sign off and ask Sudesh where’s the next venture he is planning, “Our Christchurch hotel is ready for launch this year end. We’re still keeping the details of two new properties under wraps, but you can expect to see some very exciting announcements shortly.”

hospitality and industry leader, the concept of sustainable practices is very close to his heart. He has been instrumental in integrating sustainability into the large, luxury, urban Sudima hotels. Their daughter Vedika, who is also currently involved in managing the hotel, is equally passionate about continuous improvements to attain sustainability as a long-term goal. Vedika will also be speaking at the sustainibity fair to be held in Dunedin in May this year.

Given my Indian heritage, my studio methodology brings with it traces of history, culture and spirituality. Having always been inspired by Eastern mythology and Western modern concepts, my art practice has become an amalgamation of the two.

Their first hotels to be set up were in Christchurch and Rotorua, followed by the Auckland one. As we spoke we found, that for this couple there is an imperative importance of not just creating a brand image but the need to also give back to the people around them.

Colour combined with scale has transformative powers, which lets viewers have an experiential encounter with my work. The concept of simplicity in my work allows for purity, which is rich in repercussion. It is free of explicit representational contents. “The more you complicate things, the more you lose. In renouncing you achieve more” Wolfgang Laib.

Sudesh is an award-winning luminary on integrating sustainability and is considered one of New Zealand’s first hoteliers who was instrumental in responsible hospitality. They want to be single-use plastic free in all their hotels by 2020. They have also won an environmental award and their hotels are upgraded to 4.5 stars. They have a Gold Award for supporting building design and infrastructure to cater to the people who are on wheel chairs.

concept of chilled beams. They were in fact the first hotel in Southern Hemisphere using this module. The system works with either hot or coldwater thermostats. Heat exchanges keep recovering as much energy as possible and that helps in saving as much heat as possible. It is reusable which means they keep putting it back into the system. Even their drive ways are made permeable with the use of concrete but water can fall through it so it gets absorbed back into the water table. These are little things, but we are always finding new ideas to give back to planet earth. Even their coffee mugs are compostable, completely biodegradable. They are equally concerned about the environment and ecosystem. ‘It’s not just governments but also up to us as big businesses to make the strides to actively aim for this change. I am trying to do as much as I can in the hotel industry to influence it in the best way possible’. Laxmi added that at home also, they have their own composting system. She travels a lot to India and with some encouragement, explained the benefits to the locals and started it at the ashram in Tirupati too.

Book Review Nuzhat Jahan:

Lahara ‘We are One’ Book Review: Nuzhat Jahan, at a very young age does not cease to inspire. A remarkably gifted young lady, she is a true blend of a new age, Islamic woman of today’s new generation. She completed her majors in Psychology and graduated from law school at The University of Auckland, but she did not want to stop there. Along with a transformational life coach certification under her belt, she is a powerhouse of talent, postivity and creativity. Nuzhat was enjoying a successful career as a corporate lawyer, but after working for 7 years straight, she decided it was time to take a break in 2017. She went ahead to engage her unique voice to story telling through her lively and entertaining characters. Her own dreams inspired her to write her first book. The journey to foster her creativity took two years. She based herself in London to travel to middle eastern countries; Lebanon, Jordan, Jerusalem, Palestine, Turkey, Iran, Morrocco, and Saudi Arabi. Where she completed the annual

pilgrimage of Hajj with her parents, a journey for the true spiritual fulfilment. A young writer, who followed her dream of completing her first book. A work of fiction. As lyrical as it is incisive, Lahara: We Are One interweaves love, family, and spirituality in a way that shows us the true depth and complexity of human life. In Lahara, Nuzhat Jahan boldly moves dreams from a Freudian background of individualized meaning to a social metaphor to be interpreted through interaction with those closest to us. We learn to go beyond our inherited labels of humanity to connect with others at a foundational level. Jahan has written a book that brings us closer in love as disparate communities at a time when doing so seems increasingly difficult to do. It is a book worth reading and sharing. Lahara, ‘We are One’, is the first book to be published from the Lahara trilogy.

Gold Creations Jewellers

This is a simple story told in linear narrative. It tells the story of Lahara, a young woman of inter-faith parentage, who has been crossed in love, who wonders if destiny will take her to her other half. There is Emma, Lahara’s best friend, who dies in mysterious circumstances. Has she committed suicide or is it something else? Then there is Lahara’s family itself, her rather distant but loving father, her warm and wonderfully loving mother, her younger sister Naira who is ‘gifted’ in ways that the world cannot comprehend. The narrative is almost poetic, the tone spiritual, as Lahara’s story moves from heart-break to death and new beginnings. Everything hinges on Lahara writing her book, and it’s her dreams that guide Lahara to her destiny, helping her unravel the mysteries of her universe.

A quick and satisfying read that sets before you very simple philosophies of life, love and living. Community Reporting incidents to Police One of my biggest challenges as a Police officer is trying to encourage the public and local businesses to report all criminal and suspicious activity. This can be done by either of two ways. The Police emergency number on 111, or the Crime Reporting Line on 302 6400.

If you are witnessing a crime where the offender is still present, or someone just acting suspicious, you should dial 111 immediately and ask for Police. Your information could help prevent a crime from occurring and someone else becoming a victim.

Regardless of how you’d like, or expect Police to respond to your call, it is essential that you tell us what is happening.

If your call is non-urgent you can make a report via the Crime Reporting Line on 09 3026400.

Many people I speak to think that the 111 emergency number should only be used when there is a threat to life or property; however this is not the case.

Bear in mind that there will be occasions when Police are not available for attendance as this will be due to serious incidents where there is the risk to life and property occurring at the

same time. Regardless of this, your call is important as it provides Police with invaluable intelligence which can be used for the future deployment of Police and Community Patrols

If you have information about a crime and wish to remain anonymous you can report this through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111. Your identity will remain confidential and will not be passed on to Police.

Arnold Schwarzenegger stable after open-heart surgery Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who underwent a heart surgery this week, is now in a stable condition. His spokesperson, Daniel Ketchell, said on Twitter that on Thursday, the 70-year-old “underwent a planned procedure to replace a pulmonic valve that was originally replaced due to a congenital heart defect in 1997.” “Schwarzenegger is awake and his first words were actually ‘I’m back’, so he is in good spirits,” Ketchell tweeted.

“That 1997 replace valve was never meant to be permanent and has outlived its life expectancy, so he chose to replace it yesterday through a lessinvasive catheter valve replacement,” he said. “During that procedure, an open-heart surgery team was prepared, as they frequently are in these circumstances, in case the catheter procedure was unable to be performed.”

Hollywood

that the star “is currently recovering from the surgery and is in stable condition,” adding, “We want to thank the entire medical team for their tireless efforts.” Schwarzenegger, a former governor of California, is best known for his roles in Conan the Barbarian, True Lies and The Terminator series.

He said Schwarzenegger’s pulmonic valve was “successfully replaced” and

Truth behind Angelina’s ultimatum to Brad Pitt finally revealed The entertainment world woke up to the news of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie parting ways in September 2016. Before the release of their official statement, there were rumours that Jolie decided to end her two-year marriage with Pitt because of his closeness with Marion Cotillard. However, Marion debunked the false claims. Also, after Jennifer Aniston announced her separation with Justin Theroux, people speculated that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston might rejoin as a couple, reported Inquisitor. Cameron Diaz confirms retirement Prominent Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz has made an announcement lately that she has retired from acting, thus putting an end to her cinematic career.

Diaz last appeared in the 2014 remake of musical “Annie,” in which she starred alongside Jamie Foxx. Her big break arrived in 1994 with Jim Carrey film The Mask.

Diaz recently reunited with her co-stars Selma Blair and Christina Applegate of the 2002 American comedy “The Sweetest Thing” for an interview with Entertainment Weekly to reminisce about the film, reported CNN.

Diaz has starred in a number of hit films, from “There’s Something About Mary” to “Charlie’s Angels” to “My Sister’s Keeper” to “Shrek.”

The topic of the trio having not reunited was brought up, when Diaz said, “Maybe I should, you know, I mean, I’m down. I’m literally doing nothing.” After Applegate said she was semi-retired from acting to raise her children, Diaz responded, “I’m semi-retired, too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.”

business partners. However, the claims were later debunked. Gossip Cop, on Sunday debunked all the claims and reported that there is nothing going on between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. The former couple got in touch very casually and occasionally. There has not actually been any confirmation on a Brad-Jen reunion as a couple. Despite all the bogus reports, the only factual accuracy is that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still working on their divorce settlement, which includes the future of their six children.

The PMO has appreciated the gesture the by Mr. Tendulkar. “Prime Minister acknowledges this thoughtful gesture and conveys his gratitude. These contributions will be of immense help in providing assistance to the persons in distress.” says a Prime Minister Office release which revealed of his donation. The former cricketer has been a subject of criticism for a long time for his very poor attendance in the upper house. In fact, he has only attended 29 out of nearly 400 Parliament sessions. He only asked 22 questions and introduced no bill. However, Mr. Sachin Tendulkar has made a good utilization of local MP Area Development Fund. Bairstow confident of England winning Christchurch Test England wicket-keeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow is confident that his side could scalp 10 wickets on fifth day of the Christchurch Test to level the series 1-1 against New Zealand. “We’ve got three sessions to bowl and take 10 wickets. If the light and weather comes into it, there’s nothing we can do about it,” the Sport24 quoted Bairstow, as saying.

“Going into the last day, we’re in a great position. I think we’ve got a good chance.” New Zealand were 42 without loss in pursuit of a mammoth target of 382 runs when the day was called off due to bad light. They just need to save their wickets on the final day while batting on a flat pitch to win their first Test series against England since 1999.

However, Bairstow believes that there is enough in the Hagley Oval pitch to create chances to level the series. “We’ve beaten the bat consistently. Leachy (spinner Jack Leach) bowled three overs this evening and there were some chances created there,” he said.

MS Dhoni, Pankaj Advani conferred with Padma Bhushan Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and star cueist Pankaj Advani on Monday received the coveted Padma Bhushan award from President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the national capital. Dhoni, who was seen dressed smartly in his official uniform of the Territorial Army for the ceremony, marched to receive the honour while his wife Sakshi proudly cheered for him. Incidentally, the 36-year-old received the country’s third highest civilian award on the same day (April 2) he led Team India to the World Cup glory at Wankhede Stadium way back in 2011, ending the country’s 28-year-old wait for the title.

Regarded as one of the most successful Indian captains of all time, Dhoni had led India to 2007 T20I World Cup victory before later guiding the side to 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Dhoni bid adieu to Test cricket in 2014 before stepping down from limitedovers captaincy in January 2017, thus handing the captaincy across all formats to Virat Kohli. Advani, on the other hand, is also considered as the best snooker player to have ever come out of the country. The cueist, who recently claimed the IBSF World Snooker Championship- his 18th world title, has bagged a total of 19 titles, including winning gold twice at the Asian Games in 2006 and 2010.

Dhoni, who holds the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel, is the second Indian cricketer after Kapil Dev to be conferred with this coveted award.
