As a designer, you should be aware of your history. What came before you helps to give you an understanding and awareness about your profession, and will make the road before you clearer.

briefing: part 1

Prepare a 3-minute powerpoint presentation on one of the designers selected for you below: Abram Games Saul Bass David Carson Michel Gondry Tibor Calman Paul Rand

Explain their Design Philosophy. Your talk should be illustrated with brilliant images and your analysis of their work. What do you think of them ? Research their history and background in the library, bookstores and in on theInternet. Rehearse your talk before next week’s class – you only have 3 minutes in which to present. Do not just read out their life history but explain what is unique and innovative about their work. You must use music to accompany. Choose a song that complements the Designer. Your talk should aim to inspire us to learn more about your Designer. briefing: part 2

Design and produce an A4 ‘souvenir’ sheet encapsulating the work of your designer to be given to each member of your group as a reminder of their work. . Your sheet may include quotes , images, website details etc. Produce an edition of 20 so that each member of the group has a copy to keep. Maximum creativity is expected!

Talks and souvenirs will be presented during Week 2.

Identify and evaluate emerging design trends through visual research. Implement typographic and image generating strategies appropriate to solving a visual communication problem.

note

You will need to devote independent time to research and analyse each of the designers that have been presented. Do not just download, print and paste. Look, analyse and understand their work. Put your own comments in there. Why are they interesting to you? Or, why aren’t they? This will form your Research marks for this project.
