Bockground The body gets energy f,rom oxygen and nutrients found in blood. Blood is pumped through arteries and veins by the heart. The heart is a strongmuscle that forcesblood though its chambersto circulate it throuehout the body. The heart, veins, and arteries make up the circulatory system.
Preparotion Make a transparencyof Attachment 11.
A. Show studentshow to use a stethoscope.(you can use the pulse points in the neck, wrist, elbow, or chest areas.) Allow everyone to listen to a heartbeat.(Make sure vou wipe off the earpiecewith an alcohol wipe after each use.) Have studentsplace their fingertips on their necks to feel their pulse. Ask studentsto count their heartbeats in 30 seconds.After eachstudentfinds his or her heartbeat,time their counting. Have studentswrite the number of heartbeatson the board. Ask studentsto determinethe highest number, the lowest number, and the number heard by most students.
