• The Soviet Union was a Communist society. • Political freedom was very restricted. • The government owned and ran everything. • If you spoke badly of the government, you would be punished.

• One estimate shows that around $8 trillion ($8,000,000,000,000) was spent on weaponry worldwide during 1945 and 1996. • The estimated cost of the bombs ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Fat Man’ was $5 billion each.

• 13th August 1961, wall starts getting built. • 9th November 1989, East Berliners crowd around the wall protesting after hearing a speech by Günter Schabowski stating that they could cross the wall. Within the next few weeks, people were going to the wall attacking it with sledgehammers and other various things to knock the wall down.

• During the early 1960s he became head of the agriculture department for the Stavropol region. •Served as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1970-1990. • Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. • President of the USSR in 1990-1991.

• Elected to be President on January 20 1981. • He was one of the world leaders who made a major contribution to communism's collapse. • Many believed that Reagan's defence policies, hard line rhetoric against the Soviet Union and Communism, as well as summits with General Secretary Gorbachev played a significant part in ending the War.

• Elected for presidency on January 20 1989. • Played a big part in guiding Germany toward unity and NATO membership, all with the consent of the Soviet Union during the cold war.
