July 19, 2009 Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

WELCOME TO PEACE WITH CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH! We give thanks to God that you are joining us today! Many of our guests are seeking a home church where they can be part of the Fellowship of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace with Christ is a congregation that is a family not an “organization”. We are small enough to allow people to know each other by name, and yet large enough to offer opportunities for growth and service. What we “specialize” in is not programs or productions, but simply The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus. Christ, His Word, and the Cross are what provide the foundation for faith and ministry. If you are interested in learning more about Peace With Christ Lutheran Church, please call the church office at 226-4721. Pastor Patrick would welcome the opportunity to visit with you personally.

THE TIME before the service may be used for prayer and preparation. Read through the worship bulletin and familiarize yourself with the service. A few moments spent this way will help make the service more meaningful. NEXT WEEK’S LUTHERAN HOUR MESSAGE: “Without Dread” Guest Speaker: Rev. Michael Walther of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Collinsville, IL. God’s Word brings repentance to the complacent and relief to those who are anxious. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD APOLOGY OF THE AUGSBURG CONFESSION ARTICLE XIIA: REPENTANCE SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Faith is conceived and strengthened through Absolution, through the hearing of the Gospel, through the use of the Sacraments, so that it may not give in to the terrors of sin and death. This method of repentance is plain and clear. It increases the worth of the Power of the Keys and of the Sacraments. It illumines Christ's benefit and teaches us to make use of Christ as Mediator and the Atoning Sacrifice. Christ says, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Here there are two parts. The "labor" and the burden signify the contrition, anxiety, and terrors of sin and death. To "come to" Christ is to believe that sins are forgiven for Christ's sake. When we believe, our hearts are brought to life by the Holy Spirit through Christ's Word. Here, therefore, are these two chief parts: contrition and faith. In Mark 1:15, Christ says, "Repent and believe in the gospel." In the first clause He convicts of sins, and in the second He comforts us and shows the forgiveness of sins. Believing the Gospel is in the proper sense is believing that the forgiveness of sins has been granted for Christ's sake. This is revealed in the Gospel. Here the two parts are joined: contrition when sins are rebuked; and faith when it is said, "Believe in the gospel." For this satisfies us, that contrition and faith are named as the chief parts. Luther Quote: “Faith gives the glory to God. Nothing greater can be given Him. But giving the glory to God means to believe Him, to consider Him truthful, wise, just, merciful, omnipotent, in short, to acknowledge Him to be the Author and giver of everything good.”

Transforming Churches Network — July 16-31 The Transforming Churches Network (TCN) provides training and resources to help congregations fulfill their role as “mission outposts.” TCN is a non-profit partner organization of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod dedicated to revitalizing churches.

Daily Prayers: Sunday: For the 100 coaches who are already serving at congregations holding their initial weekend consultations. The coaches also conduct monthly coaching sessions with each congregation’s pastor and quarterly visits with the congregation’s leadership for at least one year after the initial consultation.

Monday: For more candidates to serve in the coaching role to be revealed to districts and TCN, so that even more churches can be transformed through the ministry of TCN.

Tuesday: For Rev. Dr. Terry Tieman, TCN’s executive director, as he guides the Board of Directors in their efforts to transform LCMS congregations. Terry became the full-time executive director in January 2009.

Wednesday: For the other leaders serving on TCN’s Board of Directors: Rev. David Born, Darwin Melnyk, Rev. Dr. Bob Newton, and Rev. Dr. Dwight Marable. Ask the Holy Spirit to grant them continued passion and wisdom in their leadership. Thursday: With thanksgiving for the 275 congregations that are currently undergoing the revitalization process. These congregations are actively working, by the grace and power of God, to move from being inwardly focused to outwardly focusing on how they can impact their communities with the Gospel. Friday: For the lay leaders and other members of these congregations in the revitalization process. May the Holy Spirit work in their hearts to begin shifting their focus as a church towards those who do not yet know Jesus as their Savior.

Saturday: For the pastors in the congregations currently in the TCN process—that their monthly coaching sessions would be encouraging and insightful.
