Normal Dosage- 20-80 mg

Indications-LASIX is indicated in adults and pediatric patients for Contraindications/warnings/interactions - Hypersensitivity. Geriatric the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure,patients may have increased risk of side effects, especially cirrhosis of the liver, and renal disease, including the nephrotic hypotension and electrolyte imbalance, at usual doses. syndrome. Oral LASIX may be used in adults for the treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Mechanism of action-Inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and Common side effects-CNS: dizziness, encephalopathy, headache, insomnia, chloride from the loop of Henle and distal renal tubule. Increases nervousness,EENT: hearing loss, tinnitus,CV: hypotension, renal excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, hydrogen, GI: constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, GU: and calcium. May have renal and peripheral vasodilatory effects. excessive urination,Derm: photosensitivity, rashes, Diuresis and subsequent mobilization of excess fluid (edema, Endo: hyperglycemia,F and E: dehydration, hypochloremia, hypokalemia, pleural effusions). Decreased blood pressure. hypomagnesemia , hyponatremia, hypovolemia, metabolic alkalosis , Hemat: blood dyscrasias,Metab: hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, MS: arthralgia, muscle cramps, myalgia,Misc: increased BUN. Lab value alterations- Monitor electrolytes, renal and hepatic function, serum glucose, and uric acid levels before and periodically throughout therapy. May cause ↓ serum potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations. May also cause ↑ BUN, serum glucose, creatinine, and uric acid levels

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC, or herbal medicines-↑ hypotension withantihypertensives, nitra te s. May need to take a potassium supplement because lasix depletes K+ levels.

Nursing Considerations-Assess fluid status during therapy. Monitor daily weight, intake and output ratios, amount and location of edema, lung sounds, skin turgor, and mucous membranes. Diuretic use is associated with increased risk for falls in older adults. Assess falls risk and implement fall prevention strategies. Assess patient for tinnitus and hearing loss.

Why would you hold or not giveEvaluation- Check after giving this med?Dehydration, Decrease in edema, Decrease in hypokalemia, excessive dizziness or abdominal girth, Decrease in disorientation, tinnitus, blurred vision blood pressure. Monitor I & O Signs of ototoxicity.
