So the company has hammered plastic barcodes (barkodes?l) on a million trees across Africa, southeast Asia and South America to help countries keep track of timber reserves. The solution is designed to improve productivity, cost efficiency, and cooperation between organizations, including data procurement and two-way dataflow. It will also increase Forestry Centres' customer use of Forestry Centre services and advice. Working with Finland's Ministry of Agriculture and

Forestry, Tapio supports forest management planning for the country's 13 regional Forestry Centres by providing them with information systems. To make operative planning more effective, Tapio deployed Tieto's solution, which is built on ArcGIS 9.3, ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) software. ArcGIS has been used to support forest management solutions for decades. The system enables Forestry Centres to maintain an up-to-date, high-quality forest resource database for the entire country. http://tinyurl.com/fiufinnish . GOOGLE JOINS SPACE AGENCIES MONITORING DEFORESTATION - Google is joining forces with space agencies around the world and the conservation organization Group on Earth Observations (GEO) to monitor deforestation rates using satellite imagery. Among the space agencies working on the program are NASA, the ESA, and the national space agencies of Japan, Germany, Italy, India, and Brazil. http://tinyurl.com/fiugoog . EMISSION CAPTURE STUDY FUNDED FOR PAPER INDUSTRY. May lead to reduction of greenhouse gases - Battelle and Boise Inc. will conduct the first-ever feasibility study of new carbon capture and storage technology in the $140 billion pulp, paper and paperboard industry, under a $500,000 project announced by the US Department of Energy (DOE). Successful completion of the study could pave the way for pulp, paper, and other industries to use technology that captures carbon dioxide (CO2). http://tinyurl.com/fiughg . BOAT TAIL REDUCES TRUCK FUEL CONSUMPTION BY 7.5 PERCENT - A boat tail, a tapering protrusion mounted on the rear of a truck, leads to fuel savings of 7.5 percent. This is due to dramaticallyimproved aerodynamics, as shown by road tests conducted by the PART (Platform for Aerodynamic Road Transport) public-private partnership platform. An articulated lorry was driven for a period of one year with a boat tail (of varying length) and one year without a boat tail. The improved aerodynamics, depending on the length of the boat tail, resulted in reduced fuel consumption (and emissions!) of up to 7.5 percent. The optimum boat tail length proved to be two metres. http://tinyurl.com/fiuboat . EXTINCTION CRISIS CONTINUES APACE - The latest update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species shows that 17,291 species out of the 47,677 assessed species are threatened with extinction. The results confirm that 21% of all known mammals, 30% of all known amphibians, 12 per cent of all known birds and 32% of all known gymnosperms (conifers and cycads) are threatened with extinction. Results for other species-groups that have not yet been comprehensively assessed, such as freshwater fishes and dragonflies, indicate similar high levels of threat. http://tinyurl.com/fiucrisis

Traditional techniques for forest monitoring are expensive and time-consuming due to their dependence on elite outsiders manipulating gadgets requiring education and literacy.
