Nepal Musings….
DR. RANDY SMITH, LEAD LEAD PASTOR
Look again at this temple. The children are being raised to believe they have to placate innumerable “deities” in Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, and Animism. Unless Christian workers can reach them with the gospel of Jesus Christ, they will only grow up learning that the way to peace with the spirit world is to give a blood sacrifice of an animal tied to that pole in the photo, whacking its head off in one fell swoop. NIV 1 John 3:8 The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
Take a close look at this temple...rather imposing, isn’t it? Believe me it was even darker and dirtier in person, and I had no interest in getting any closer. The thing is, this is what people in many “nonChristian” lands deal with all the time. In fact, apart from this nasty looking temple, the rest of the town was welcoming, with its long buildings for homes and people doing normal things– for that part of the world. Some men were out playing cards (a couple were working), while the women did the hard work. One lady was weaving a grass mat, up the road were some women in a rice patty carrying heavy loads, and in another place women were looming rugs. Of course none of these people would be paid more than a pittance.
If no Christians go and tell them that Jesus has destroyed all the works of these evil spirits and that they can be free, then they will continue to fear zombies (the demon-animated bodies of the dead) (they have low doorways to try and keep them out). Who will go and bring the message that frees these children? As I’ve often said, we must either go or send. If we aren’t going, then let’s get our checkbooks out and send. Let’s pray like their lives depend on our intercession and take the battle to the enemy.
In yet another part of town we ran into a group of children out playing, just like kids anywhere. We got them to pose with us by one of the pools of community water. NIV Luke 18:16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Do we believe that Jesus loves these sons and daughters less than He loves our own? Don’t we want our own kids to come to know Jesus? The Bible’s teaching is clear that Jesus cares for these little children and so should we.
As we celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection, let’s remember that He died for all the world so that some from every nation and tribe would one day be gathered around His throne in glory. Let’s do our part in seeing that some of these Newar people in Nepal will be worshipping the Risen Lord - right by our side.
