WRITING WARM-UP ACTIVITY Focused sub-skill: WORD CHOICE

INSTRUCTIONS • Divide the class into 7 groups of 3 • Each group sends 1 representative to the “battle field”, where players stand in a circle. • When the judge points at one of the 7 players at random, she has to speak out one relevant word (specify later) within 5 seconds. • The referee decides whether your word is correct or not. • If you repeat the already spoken word, you’re out. • If you are helped by supporters “illegally”, you’re out.

ROUND 1: COLLOCATION • Your task is to find an adjective that goes with the noun on the screen • If you are correct, the judge will move on to other players. • If you are not, the supporters in your group should support you within 5 seconds. If they are right, you can move on. If they are wrong, you are out. Each player has 1 support only. • Only when 1 player is out can we move to the next word. • The 2 last players come to the final round.

ROUND 2: SYNONYMS • The two players stand face to face. • Their task is to look for synonyms of the verbs on the screen. There are 3 verbs. • When the word appears, player 1 states the number of synonyms she knows. Then player 2 states her number, which must be bigger than player 1’s. The challenge continues until one player gives in and let the other list the words she knows. • If she can list the words exactly and sufficiently, she scores 1 point. Otherwise, the other scores 1 point. • The same process apply for the 2 remaining verbs. • Whoever scores more points wins the final award.
