It is used for checking the amount of received knowledge of a student after a certain period of learning time and passing a test is always a target for every learner. However, today many students at university of Vietnam choose to retake tests on purpose. I am under the impression that the phenomenon can’t be accepted and should not become a trend among student community. First of all, taking a test again can cost students a lot of money unnecessarily. Every student who sits a test once more has to pay an amount of money for each time of retaking because the university needs money to hold the extra examination for them. For example, in Hanoi University of Business and Technology a student spends about 300 VND retaking a threecredit subject and 600 VND, a six-credit subject. Monthly expense of an average student in Vietnam now seems to be about 800VND to 1 million VND, so the above-mentioned amount of money paid for test retaking is really a fortune. Causing financial problem can be considered an appropriate reason not to retake the exam.

Secondly, retaking tests once or more can form a bad habit and aberrant mind for students. While their counterparts are trying their best to revise all subjects with hope to get good academic result, students who have intended to resit the examination will do nothing but going out, playing games, seeing movies and waiting for retaking. If they take the make-up exam very regularly, it will be a bad habit to form. The students will find retaking “normal” and not mind doing it and wasting money for it. I just wonder if suddenly every student decided to retake tests, what would happen to main examination coming before? Retaking should be done only when students can’t pass the main exam. Those who support this phenomenon argue that retaking test can give students chance to have a better mark, and therefore, a good certification to apply a good job in the future. It is just a wrong stereotype about retaking among students. There is a rumour about easier make-up examination, loosened invigilation which can help students to pass the exam well. Nevertheless, rumour is rumour, so it is not true for all universities. The extra is in the same level of difficulty as the major and proctors still work responsibly to prevent any cheat. In other words, retaking without an effort doesn’t mean better result. In my opinion, students should not retaking a test for some unreasonable reasons. Learning for knowledge nor for mark can give you a good and stable job after graduation. Let examinations work for you because no cheat can make you better.
