From the ES Administration Dear Elementary School Parents,

Today you are expecting a grade level newsletter as it is the first Friday of the month, however, due to report card writing, music concerts etc. we decided to go with the ES Parent Bulletin this week. All class blogs are up and running, so please refer to

your class site and enjoy finding out about what is happening in your child’s classroom and interacting with them through writing comments. Report cards will be distributed on December 16, the last day of the semester. The report provides a narrative on how the teachers have observed and assessed your child’s progress in terms of their social, academic, creative and physical achievements. When you receive the report, your child will probably be excited and interested in reading the report with you. Set aside some time when you can do this together and discuss the teachers’ comments. Please celebrate the progress your child has made this year as well as encourage them in the areas that may need improvement. If you have any questions regarding the report, please arrange a time to discuss with the teacher/s. Report cards will not be ready for distribution before December 16 if you are leaving earlier for the holiday. You can make arrangements with the ES Office to have the report card sent to you, or you can pick it up from your class teacher when we return to school on January 5. We had two great music concerts this morning. Our students enjoyed the opportunity to perform in the Fine Arts Theater for you, and it was a fantastic program. Thank you to our students for their hard work and to our team of music teachers. On Tuesday, December 8, our AFAC students will be having a recital in the Little Theater for strings, band and choir. Yours in Education,

Simon Gillespie ES Principal

From the PE Department

From the Art Department Grade Four ART: ‘Interactive Exhibition of Moods’ Parents: We need you to give us your thoughts! We would like to invite parents to visit our Interactive Exhibition of Moods which will be on display in the Grade Four corridors from 10th December to 16Th December. As part of their authentic assessment task, Grade Four Students have created ‘Moody Paintings’ specifically for this exhibition which we hope parents, students and teachers will visit in their own time. Each painting conveys a feeling or mood, which currently is top secret! Visitors will be asked to ‘guess the mood of the painting’ (eg, happy, sad, peaceful, lonely….) by slipping a note into an envelope. Students will later be able to reflect upon their own ability to portray a mood of a painting through use of subject matter and color, according to the results in their envelope! Therefore we need as many votes as possible. Please come at your leisure, during the dates mentioned above. Many thanks! Helen Arnold Grade 4 Art Teacher 2

Dear ISM Community, With the holiday period about to commence, this is a perfect time to put aside recyclable materials like greeting cards, gift wrap, packaging and old toys. We are as always continuing our collection of materials like bottle caps, lids, Styrofoam trays, boxes, toilet/towel rolls, utensils, tools etc that aid us in producing interesting and environmentally friendly art work. You can drop off any materials to room 1189 opposite the ES gym. Thanks for your assistance. Olivia Jones ES ART

From the PE Department ES Sports Day. The Elementary School Annual Sports Day is scheduled for February 19th. This event is an all day event involving all ES classes. Our focus is on having fun being active, cooperation, and sportsmanship. One of our Physical Education Standards is to value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and social interaction. Our Sports Day is designed to provide opportunities for students to make progress towards the attainment of this standard. This is a fantastic full day event. There will be no regular classes or specialist classes on the day. Classroom teachers will take their classes to a variety of challenging and fun activities throughout the day. Specialist teachers and support staff will be the experts at each station to assist each team. There will be an opening and closing ceremony as well. All parents are invited to attend and support your child on the day by participating in the games, taking photos, and assisting as required. E.g. turning jump ropes! Students will also be given the opportunity to design a team logo and name to be printed onto their own ‘class t-shirt’ over the next month. These shirts have a huge visual impact and promote great team spirit (and it also makes it easier to keep track of each class!). Although it’s not compulsory, we strongly encourage you to purchase one in order to make this day even more memorable. Each child will be automatically billed to their school in December account 330 pesos for a T-shirt. You will receive more information about the specific activities and facilities closer to the event. If you would like to assist in the organizing of this event or on the day please contact me directly through the ES Office or school e-mail at [email protected] Amanda Pekin ES Physical Education Click here for addresses for kids’ sports in Manila.

All children in elementary physical education will swim for two blocks during the school year, approximately 24 PE lessons. One block in the first semester and a second block in the second semester. We currently use the Australian Swim and Survive Program. Swim and Survive provides a broad, balanced program of swimming, water safety and survival skills in preparation for a lifetime of safe activity in, on or near the water. Swim and Survive develops: * Swimming technique * Water safety * Water confidence * Survival * Endurance Swim and Survive caters for children of all abilities. The early levels provide opportunities to build confidence and respect for the water, whilst the upper levels prepare the child for the increased complexity of their relationship with aquatic environments. Bright and colorful certificates reward children for the many developmental steps that they will take in learning to Swim and Survive. You can visit the site click here to see the specific skills and levels your child will be learning. 3

ES After School Activities ALL After School Activities for the first semester will end on the week of December 7- 11, 2009. If your child wishes to either continue with the same activity or take a different activity for the second semester he/she MUST register again. Registration period is on December 2 until December 16. NEW ACTIVITIES for Second Semester Animarvelous (for grade 3-4, every Thursday)

“Every animal knows more than you do.”—Native American Proverb

Animals are marvelous, amazing and spectacular. There are so many more words and ways to describe them. Do you also think animals are wonderful? Then this activity is for you. We will meet once a week to discuss relevant topics like “Responsible Pet Ownership”, “Lending a Hand to Animals” and “Extraordinary Animals”. Together we will create flyers and posters with our important information to share with the rest of the Elementary School. There are some great organizations in the Philippines who help animals. We will design a plan and donate to at least one of them. Everything we learn we will share with our classroom friends and other grade levels and they will learn from us.

Circus Skills (for grade 2-4, every Monday and Thursday) Ever wanted to run away with the circus? Now is your chance to learn some skills seen in the circus including: juggling, clowning, unicycles, Chinese YoYos and basic tumbling routines. This is about having fun and learning some new skills. No previous experience needed. We will teach you all you need to know. Patience and persistence are essential!
