ES New Parent Coffee @ 7.30am, ES Office Faculty Lounge

We are coming to the end of 2009, and our first semester of the school year. We wish everyone a relaxing end of semester holiday break, and look forward to returning refreshed and ready to start the second semester, along with a new year and new decade. At this time of year, we have a number of students to say goodbye to as they move on to different countries around the world. We have enjoyed being a part of your learning journey and wish you all the best at your new school. In January we will welcome some new students, who we will help to establish a connection with our community and new friendships as they begin their time at ISM. Yours in Education,

Simon Gillespie ES Principal

From the Guidance Office The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids From Scientific American Wandering among suburban estates, sports clubs and prep schools are overlooked children of a perplexed generation. Their lives overflow with abundance and praise, yet ironically, the mask of apparent health and success may hide a gloomy world of emptiness, anxiety and anger. Strangely, argues Madeline Levine, a clinical psychologist practicing in Marin County, California, the nation’s latest group of at-risk kids comes from affluent, well-educated families. Despite advantages, these children experience disproportionately high rates of clinical depression, substance abuse, anxiety, eating disorders and self-destructive (even self-mutilating) behaviors, according to various studies. Based on criteria from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Levine says these children "are exhibiting epidemic rates of emotional problems beginning in junior high school and accelerating throughout adolescence." One may brush off these youngsters as overindulged products of wealthy, narcissistic parents. But Levine says many of these kids are really ill. They suffer from a weak sense of self, often struggling to fill inner emptiness with objects and praise. Too often they know something is wrong and grope desperately for help yet fail to escape a downward spiral. Could it be, Levine wonders, that privilege, high expecta(Continued on page 2)

tions, competitive pressure and parental over-involvement yield toxic rather than protective effects? Levine explores such issues as social isolation, the fine line between parental underinvolvement and overindulgence, and the perverse role of money and material goods in creating false promises of fulfillment. Yearning for outward approval, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the delusion that wealth causes happiness. In many cases, a rude awakening occurs only after many years of anxiety and depression. Levine’s writing is surprisingly reflective and interesting. A constructive therapist, she offers practical guidelines and parenting strategies for those struggling with troubled teens. The advice is useful to any parent of any income level and includes ways to foster healthy autonomy, impulse control and sense of self. Levine emphasizes the importance of discipline, monitoring and limit setting as ways to encourage kids to construct healthy "inner" homes. More important, parents must "stand on their own two feet" before expecting their children to stand on theirs—noting that many parents scold their children for social behaviors that they themselves cannot manage, such as substance abuse and lack of self-discipline or self-assertion. Parents must strive to get their own inner homes in order before they can expect kids to straighten out theirs. Richard Lipkin

Sound interesting? The Price of Privilege… is the book we will be reading for the next Parent Book Group starting on Thursday, January 21, 2010 from 8 to 10am. This is a ten week course and regular attendance is appreciated. Group facilitators are from the PreK-12 Guidance Department. These groups are open to ALL ISM parents, PreK-12! Spaces are limited so sign up soon. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Myrna Perez in the ES Guidance Office (840-8455) to reserve your space or for more information.

From the School Clinic

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Please be advised that we have one confirmed case of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in the Elementary School, a moderately infectious disease, caused by a virus. This is characterized by fever, sores in the mouth, and a rash with blisters. The illness is not usually severe and a full recovery is usually made within 7 to 10 days. Please be vigilant, however, for the above symptoms and take your child to the doctor if you think they may have contracted the disease. H1N1 Vaccination At the present moment, vaccines have arrived in the Philippines and are being distributed by the government. These vaccines are not yet available commercially and are designated for specific groups only. It is unlikely that the ISM community will be able to access these vaccines for some time and we would therefore advise you, if you wish your family to receive the vaccination, to investigate the possibility of getting it in your own country if you are going home for the Christmas holidays. You may also wish to consider reviewing your family’s vaccination records during the holiday, particularly if you are returning home. Please access the following website for information on recommended vaccinations; http://www.cdc.gov/ vaccines/recs/schedules/default.htm , although this may vary slightly depending on your country of origin. Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year from the clinic staff Debbie Duckworth – Clinic Admiistrator Mary Ann Calma-Bagos – Clinic Consultant Keg Salazar Jr – Senior Nurse Jowell Custodio – Junior Nurse Evagne Atienza – Staff Nurse Thank you for your kind Christmas gifts 2

From the Art Department The Grade Four Exhibition of Moods will continue through to Wednesday 16th December. Please visit the Grade Four corridors where student’s paintings are displayed. Students need, and are looking forward to your opinions on this work! You will be required to decide the mood of the painting (eg happy, sad etc), write this on a small paper and place it in an envelope. Please come by any time at your leisure.

Dear ISM Community, With the holiday period about to commence, this is a perfect time to put aside recyclable materials like greeting cards, gift wrap, packaging and old toys. We are as always continuing our collection of materials like bottle caps, lids, Styrofoam trays, boxes, toilet/ towel rolls, utensils, tools etc that aid us in producing interesting and environmentally friendly art work. You can drop off any materials to room 1189 opposite the ES gym. Thanks for your assistance. Olivia Jones ES ART

From the Animarvelous Club a message from the ES Animarvelous Kids

Fireworks frighten animals!

From the PE Department Just a reminder about PE uniforms and footwear…. Students may wear their PE uniforms to school on the days of the week they are scheduled for Physical Education. We do ask that they keep a school uniform at school in the event they become wet (as often happens in the rainy season on the ES Field) or they need to change for hygiene reasons.

It is December . . . The safest and kindest thing by far, is to keep your pets safely inside the house with a television or radio playing to drown out the noise.

Students are required to bring a full water bottle to each PE lesson and be wearing a hat and sunscreen for lessons scheduled on the ES Field.

Even from as far as miles away from the display, an animal can feel and hear the loud noises that a fireworks display puts out. Do not keep dogs chained or caged outside during a firework display. Be their voice this holiday season!

3

Students must wear appropriate footwear i.e. no flip flops, crocs or sandals. (Except when swimming or scheduled for gymnastics in which case they will be barefoot for PE lessons and so does not matter what footwear they wear to PE lessons as they will be removing their shoes. )

ES After School Activities ALL After School Activities for the first semester will end on the week of December 7- 11, 2009. If your child wishes to either continue with the same activity or take a different activity for the second semester he/she MUST register again. Registration period is on December 2 until December 16. NEW ACTIVITIES for Second Semester Animarvelous (for grade 3-4, every Thursday)

“Every animal knows more than you do.”—Native American Proverb

Animals are marvelous, amazing and spectacular. There are so many more words and ways to describe them. Do you also think animals are wonderful? Then this activity is for you. We will meet once a week to discuss relevant topics like “Responsible Pet Ownership”, “Lending a Hand to Animals” and “Extraordinary Animals”. Together we will create flyers and posters with our important information to share with the rest of the Elementary School. There are some great organizations in the Philippines who help animals. We will design a plan and donate to at least one of them. Everything we learn we will share with our classroom friends and other grade levels and they will learn from us.

Circus Skills (for grade 2-4, every Monday and Thursday) Ever wanted to run away with the circus? Now is your chance to learn some skills seen in the circus including: juggling, clowning, unicycles, Chinese YoYos and basic tumbling routines. This is about having fun and learning some new skills. No previous experience needed. We will teach you all you need to know. Patience and persistence are essential!
