Filipiniana (Celebration on Philippine Culture) School Holiday
From the ES Administration Dear Elementary School Parents, Filipiniana has been an event happening at ISM for many years, in the Elementary School the past few years it as included an assembly followed by a Barrio Fiesta with the ES playground becoming a festive area with huts, Filipino dishes and delicacies for our children to enjoy, traditional games to play, Jeepney rides, and a parade of High School students and marching bands. This has been an exciting time for students and a celebration for our Elementary School. In light of the recent natural disaster in Manila and the effect it has had, we have been reflecting on the most appropriate focus of this event. We would like to reframe this day somewhat and make it more meaningful for student learning about the Philippines and our response to the current situation as a community. Our day will now be “A Window into the Philippines”… We will begin the day on Friday October 23, 2009 with a whole ES assembly at 8:00 in the Fine Arts Theatre. This will begin with a music video of the country, followed by a
different presentation by each grade level (not all students in a grade level will be performing). This will include singing, dancing, student council sharing some results of the donation collection and where our donations have gone, and dramatic representations of Philippine culture. After the assembly at each grade level we will have different centers that each class will spend approximately 30 minutes at over the course of the day. We will not have a central Barrio Fiesta in the playground, and at each grade level the centers will be organized in the classrooms for that grade level. The centers will include some of the following: 1. Preparing a local Filipino dish, which will be prepared by the students, and donated to members of our community and Papaya Academy at the end of the day. During this session, students will also find out more about local foods, and will sample a dish. 2. Writing letters and drawing pictures to make a book for Papaya Academy, each grade level will write letters of support and hope for those affected and these will be collated into books to be given directly to the matching grade level class at Papaya Academy. 3. Mural – the Art team will be leading the development of a series of murals representing the Philippines 4. Language Learning Session – students will be taught some local expressions and learn more about the language spoken in the Philippines 5. Dance and games – students will learn a dance and a game to play 6. Story telling 7. Service Learning In order to make this day happen, we will be asking for parent volunteers, parent liaisons from the PTA at each grade level will be contacting you, so please sign up. We look forward to a great day celebrating and learning more about the Philippines! Yours in Education,

From the Communications Office THANK YOU to the ISM Community of parents, students, teachers and staff for supporting our student-led relief efforts for the victims of typhoon Ondoy: ISM Students raised a total of Php 406,936.35 --- THANKS TO YOU!! On Friday, October 2, ISM HS Students held an amazing concert to benefit the victims of typhoon Ondoy. Clubs and Councils like PCC, KCC, ACC, ECO, BTV, BTO rallied together to set-up booths and food stations. Thank you to MCDonald’s, Andoks and Hungry Tykes for providing food and ice-cream. Our very own PTA donated Php 60,000 to the cause. “We went from complaining about school not being canceled, with the desire to make a difference, to seeing these visions come to reality. 400,000 pesos is a success, and then some! WE cannot thank YOU enough. Words cannot express what an honor it is to call ourselves BEARCATS right now.” - Antonio Villalon

From the Art Department Dear Parents, I am looking for some volunteer parents who could help create art labels for the classroom in various languages. Volunteers need to be native speakers and writers of the following — Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Thai and Dutch. This is not a big job and your assistance would be much appreciated. The labels can be handwritten, or printed from a computer. They would be of specific art vocabulary which we are reinforcing in class. So far, only about ten words! Can you help? If so, please contact me at
[email protected]. Many thanks,
WELCOME

From the CMC Hello Parents! The Children’s Media Center is humming with activity! We launched our CMC Book Club for grade 4 students last week. We received lots of very convincing applications but, alas, had to limit our membership to just 12. We’ll run another Book Club next semester, so there’s a second chance! Preschool and ECLC children have settled into their browsing and borrowing routines and are showing such responsible behavior! Please reinforce how to care for books at home. Grade 1 students are able to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction books and are learning where to find books about their favorite subjects or by a favorite author. Grade 2 used non-fiction books to research habitats and animals and will be practicing using our new library search engine, Destiny Quest, this week. Grade 3 students are focusing on making personal connections to stories and some classes are using non-fiction books to learn about the affects habitats have on people. Grade 4 classes are using non-fiction books to help them create realistic characters for their migration stories and passports for Immigration Island. It’s important to teach our children that books aren’t just for information, that it’s fun to read! Try to spend fifteen minutes each evening, reading with your child. Reading aloud teaches sequence and voice, builds vocabulary, and demonstrates left to right text direction. Children love spending time with you and a good book! 3
The Physical Education Department now has a green box in the Plaza with sports equipment for children to use during their play time. It has jump ropes, (short, long and Double Dutch ropes) balls of many sizes and shapes and Frisbees. Grade 2, 3 and 4 children are allowed to borrow equipment but need to hand in their school ID to a supervisor who is stationed at the green box. At the end of play when children return the borrowed equipment they will be given back their school ID. This system helps students be responsible. We continue to emphasize that all sports equipment be used safely and properly. You can assist us as parents by playing jump rope with your children, (teaching them Jump Rope Chants) throwing a Frisbee, or simply playing throw and catch with a ball. Our purpose is to encourage children to be active, learn safe behaviors when using sports equipment and be responsible.
