There will be festivities, lectures, conferences, films, exhibitions, performances and educational efforts to mark the year and to offer education about, and celebration of, the abundant waters we share. All of these events will be listed on a cross border website www.oursharedwaters.com. The year is punctuated by the 100th Anniversary of the Boundary Waters Treaty that will be celebrated at the cross border Niagara Falls on June 13, 2009. The Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 created the independent International Joint Commission (IJC) to prevent and resolve boundary waters disputes between Canada and the United States. The IJC makes decisions on applications for projects such as dams in boundary waters and regulates the operations of many of those

projects. The IJC also has a permanent reference under the 1972 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement to help the two national governments restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of those waters. Over 40% of the boundary the divides and connects Canada and the United States is water. Hikes, seminars, boat dances and other events are planned for the week around June 13. A full listing of the art exhibitions, film screenings and other events is available at http://www.oursharedwaters.com/Boundary_Waters_Week.pdf. Announcing the 6th Annual NYS Environmental Excellence Awards Get recognition for innovative and sustainable practices! The NYS Environmental Excellence Awards program honors businesses, not-for-profit organizations, governments (local, state and federal), educational institutions and/or individuals achieving environmental excellence through uniquely innovative and environmentally sustainable practices or unique partnerships. Previous award winners have made great improvements to New York's environment such as eliminating 2.01 million pounds of hazardous waste, recycling 324 million pounds of solid waste, and preserving 149,000 acres of land. DEC is especially interested in projects that achieve significant environmental benefits by applying cutting-edge pollution prevention technologies; initiatives to make schools and businesses more "green;" energy conservation and green energy production efforts; waste reduction and recycling efforts; storm water management and watershed planning; environmental protection and restoration efforts; and land conservation. The 2009 application brochure is available on-line at www.dec.ny.gov - search for "Environmental Excellence Awards." Completed applications must be post marked no later than Friday, June 12, 2009. For more information or for a hard copy of the application, contact the Pollution Prevention Unit at (518) 402-9469, or email [email protected]. West Valley Cleanup Plans Seeking Public Comment-Last Chance The US Department of Energy (DOE) has completed a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) regarding West Valley and its proposed cleanup. The EIS considers the potential environmental impacts of possible alternatives proposed to meet DOE and NYSERDA ’s responsibilities under the West Valley Demonstration Project Act. Environmentalists are concerned that radioactive waste from this site will enter Cattaraugus Creek and ultimately Lake Erie, source of drinking water for many people in this region. The proposed plan does not call for removal of the waste from the site. Read the

report available at http://www.westvalleyeis.com/ and share your comments by written submission by June 8. West Valley Nuclear Demonstration Project, located about 35 miles south of Buffalo, is a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant that currently stores waste on site. The report discusses four alternative plans for dealing with the waste at the facility. Two Local Great Lakes Workshops Two all-day workshops on the Great Lakes are planned for June 12 at University at Buffalo. Great Lakes United’s workshop “Great Lakes Toxic Hotspots: Organizing the Cleanup” focuses on the role that citizens have played and must continue to play. The workshop also looks at the challenges that we still confront and points us forward to the approaches that are necessary for future success. In this workshop we will learn from some of the organizing strategies that have been successfully used in the Great Lakes and St Lawrence River basin. We will also spend time strategizing for our work together in the future. This workshop is made possible with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Cost is $25 which includes lunch and refreshments. Workshop is at the Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo Amherst campus from 8:30am-5:45pm. To register, visit http://www.glu.org/civicrm/event/register?id=3&reset=1 or Visit www.glu.org/sharedwaters to learn more. “Great Lakes Connecting Channels: Governance, Ecosystem Science and Management” is presented by University at Buffalo Great Lakes Program in collaboration with other units of UB from the College of Arts and Sciences, Schools of Architecture and Planning, Law, and Engineering and the Applied Sciences. This program will be at the UB Center of the Arts from 8:30am-5:45pm. Urban Revitalization Summit Focuses on Great Lakes Region “The Great Lakes Metros and the New Opportunity” will be held June 18-19, 2009 at Buffalo State College. The Summit on Great Lakes policy issues will bring together practitioners, policy makers, advocates, legislators, and stakeholders who believe that the economic crisis requires the re-evaluation of our urban revitalization strategies, and the relationship between our neighborhoods and the federal government. Topics include the expansion of weatherization and green jobs, models for regional governance, innovative uses of NSP funds, and Great Lakes restoration. Whether investigating new opportunities or scaling up existing programs, attendees will gain a birds-eye-view of trends in their field; will learn best practice strategies for ensuring maximum impact for chronically challenged older industrial cities and neighborhoods; and will explore the opportunities to influence the direction of future federal support. The Summit aims to provide both a vision and framework for the long-term revitalization that has eluded the region for too long. Hosted by GLUE (the Great Lakes Urban Exchange), the Northeast-Midwest Institute, Buffalo State's Center for Economic and Policy Studies, and the Partnership for the Public Good, the Summit will facilitate best-practice sharing, especially in areas where federal priorities are shifting. Additionally, the Summit will provide the opportunity for a collective response to the ARRA and other federal programs to be articulated from the post-industrial cities of the Great Lakes region. For info on the event, visit http://greatlakesmetros.wordpress.com/. Registration is OPEN NOW and is only $25. Reinstein Woods Summer Ecology School Offers Summer Workshops for Educators The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is offering summer workshops for teachers at Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center in the Town of Cheektowaga. Each workshop provides teachers with activities designed to incorporate environmental education into their existing curriculum. The season kicks off with the three-day “Summer Ecology School,” July 21-23. Participants will learn how to connect their students to nature through hands-on, minds-on activities related to water, forests and other habitats. The activities are designed to fit into existing curriculum in science, math, English language arts and other subject areas. Additionally, teachers will receive training on helping students develop a “sustainable” classroom as well as ideas for how students can “green” their school. The three-day program provides 15 hours of instruction for which in-service or continuing education credit may be available. A field trip to Tifft Nature Preserve and extensive information on environmental education resources available to Western New York teachers will be included in the program. Participants will receive written materials to enable them to transfer their new knowledge directly to the classroom. There is a materials fee of $30 that includes lunch on the final day of the school. Reinstein Woods is also offering several free three and six-hour workshops throughout the summer. Each workshop offers interdisciplinary activities that can be used to enhance teaching in math, English language arts, social studies, art and even physical education. The programs are designed for K-12 teachers and youth leaders of students. Participants in each workshop will receive a curriculum and activity guide that includes dozens of lesson plans for both indoor and outdoor activities. The activities are designed to teach students how to think, not what to think, about the environment. Activities are correlated to national and state learning standards. Workshop attendees take part in sample activities, receive tips on managing a class in the outdoors, and receive additional resource materials related to the workshop’s topic. To register for a workshop, or for more information, contact Reinstein Woods at (716) 683-5959. Kestrelcam Allows Online Viewing of Nesting at Iroquois NWR A live camera in a nest box at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge allows viewers to follow the nesting of a pair of American kestrels. The American kestrel, is the smallest member of the falcon family. Sometimes known as the "sparrow hawk", the majority of its diet consists of insects and small mammals and occasionally small birds. Kestrels lay 3-5 eggs per season in mid-late April and do not begin incubating until all of the eggs have been laid so all of the eggs hatch on the same day. The chicks hatch out in 29-31 days covered by white down. In the early and mid-1900's, American kestrel populations declined in many parts of North America because of the loss of nesting habitat (tree cavities). To supplement natural nest sites, conservationists designed artificial nest boxes which are mounted on tall poles to simulate a tree. Beginning in 2007, Iroquois NWR had a small camera installed to view inside a nest box located behind the refuge headquarters. Kestrels have nested within the box and you can access the live camera at http://www.fws.gov/northeast/iroquois/Kestrels.html.

Buffalo Car Share Receives Funding Buffalo Car Share was recently awarded funding totaling $149,000 through a partnership between the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). These funds will help to reimburse the organization for many of the costs associated with launching service. Buffalo Car Share seeks to provide affordable, community-based car sharing services that benefit the environment through practical innovation. Car sharing gets you where you need to go, when you need to get there, without the burdens of car ownership (including the cost of gas). Members rent vehicles on an hourly basis for errands or irregular trip, while relying on other modes of transportation (such as walking, bicycling, taking transit or carpooling) for their daily commute. When the reservation comes up, the member goes out to the car, uses an electronic key fob to access the car, and then drives the car as if they owned it. The car tracks the time out, time returned, and miles traveled. The car is returned to the same spot it was taken from and is then available to the next member. Anyone 18 or older with a relatively clean driving record can become a member, and will be insured for use of any cars within the Buffalo CarShare fleet. With the cost of auto ownership averaging 71 cents per mile, car sharing is a convenient alternative at a fraction of the cost. Buffalo Car Share has opened an office at 14 Allen and shares space with the Allentown Association. Visit http://www.buffalocarshare.org/ for info. Falcons Settle into Love Nest at UB Thanks to local birdwatchers, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and our incredibly dedicated UB facilities staff, including Environmenal Task Foundation member Ron Van Splunder, Mackay Heating Plant’s tower on South Campus is now home to a pair of peregrine falcons that have likely already produced eggs. It’s a great sign of progress in the decades-long effort to reintroduce this species to the northeast. UB facilities staff constructed a proper nesting box after the birds were seen last year. Van Splunder got permission from the state historic preservation office to put the box on the building –Mackay is a historically important building – and then the waiting began. The male returned in late March and the female returned not long after. See more of the story and pictures at http://www.buffalo.edu/ubreporter/2009_04_01/falcons_return. Other information on peregrine falcons can be seen at http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7059.html The Buffalo Audubon Society has cameras on the nesting pair on the Statler Towers, Buffalo-visit the cameras at http://www.buffaloaudubon.com/falconcam.htm. Tuesday, June 2 Garlic: Eat, Stink, Be Proud-Urban Roots Workshop presented by Seth Wochensky at 7pm. Garlic supposedly sprung up in Satan’s left footprint as he left the garden of Eden. Good thing he split because there can be no paradise without garlic. Many of the classic organic gardening manuals fail to give it any serious consideration, often giving erroneous advice. Too many backyard agronomists shy away from growing it as if the very act of placing it in the soil gave bad breath. Yet, without a doubt, a homegrown hardneck will cream the chemically treated competition from China. This workshop will cover a little history, culinary uses, scapes, cultivation techniques appropriate for an urban intensive garden, harvesting, grading and storage. Garlic: Eat. Stink. Be Proud. Seth Wochensky is a cider-pressing, bee-keeping, garlic-growing garden nut who sometimes finds time to

Tips for the Environment: 1. Curb Loading: plan a neighborhood collection for pickup-Time for your spring cleaning. Many charitable organizations will pick up items in bulk from donors. Some seek clothing donations and others will take appliances, building supplies or other materials. Contact your neighbors and collect a pile for pickup. Tax receipts can be provided. Buffalo ReUse will take building supplies and many household materials. Check http://www.buffaloreuse.org/Main/CurbLoading for more info including their list of accepted items at http://www.buffaloreuse.org/uploads/DonationGuidelines.html. 2. Reduce Air-Conditioning Costs- Not everyone has AC and we don’t often get weather that requires it, but if you do plan on using AC, consider ways to use it more efficiently. Shade your AC unit. Use your kitchen exhaust fan if cooking is heating up the kitchen. If you use your oven, multi-task and cook several things at once. For other ways to save, visit http://saveenergy.about.com/od/homecooling/tp/ac_usage.htm. 3. Need some crushed stone or gravel for a road or garden path-Consider saving your clam shells (after cooking and eating), pistachio shells, broken ceramics etc, for substrate.
