The boxing is the incentive to encourage the teens to participate in workshops and tutoring sessions that will assist them in developing their coping skills. Tutors are needed to provide homework assistance to middle and high school students of the Arlington County Boxing Club at the Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center, 4600 S. Four Mile Run Drive. Tutors should be proficient in English, science and math (including Algebra and Geometry). Preferred time frame is Wednesday evenings from 5 to 7pm.

After a short orientation to AmeriCorps and PRCR, the team will head out to the trail where they begin their training on how to recognize and safely remove several species of invasive plants. The AmeriCorps volunteers will receive a monetary stipend, medical insurance and college-bound students will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. Signing Smart ASL Play Class

Signing Smart strategies integrate more than 130 American Sign Language (ASL) signs into songs, games, and activities developed to engage very young children and their parents. Research has shown that Signing Smart with hearing babies and toddlers allows communication and spoken language to happen earlier and faster, while reducing frustration and tantrums. Most children have 2-3 words by 12 months, whereas, Signing Smart children typically have 25 signs and 16 words! Most children start combining words into 2 word sentences by 20 months, whereas Signing Smart children typically do this by 11-14 months and some as early as 6 months! NIH even found a 12-point IQ increase for eightyear-olds who used signs as young children. More research, class pictures and family quotes at www.ParentChildU.com. Check us out on Facebook-search for “Arlington Teens” Compost Your Fall Leaves: Turn summer’s shade and fall’s labors into black gold for your garden this fall by learning the ins and outs of composting. Look for their information tables at the Arlington Courthouse Farmers’ Markets this fall.

Fall is prime lawn care time! “Lawns: Clean and Green?”, a two-part course on the basics of fall lawn care sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension Saturday, August 29 from 9:30–11:30am at the Arlington Central Library Auditorium located at 1015 N. Quincy Street and Tuesday, September 9 from 7:00–9:00pm at the Alexandria Duncan Library located at 2501 Commonwealth Avenue. Classes are free. Soil test kits will be available, or may be requested when you register. Registration is required.

Tree Stewards are out regularly at local Farmers Markets, answering questions from local area residents about good tree care practices and the problems faced by trees in our urban environment. You may speak with them on the first and third Saturday mornings of the month at the Courthouse market through September. Master Gardener plant clinics likewise continue weekly through September at the Courthouse Market on Saturdays and the Central Library Thursday evenings. Call 703-228-6414 for information on becoming a Tree Steward or Master Gardener volunteer.

For information on these programs call the Virginia Cooperative Extension Help Desk at 703 228-6414, and check the VCE website for workshops and publications: www.offices.ext.vt.edu/Arlington. FALL 2 0 0 9 r e c r e at i o n & l e i s u r e g u i d e

Speedy Tolliver Fiddle & Banjo Contest Madison Recreation Center, 3829 N. Stafford Street 11 – 12, Registration, Event: Noon – 4-ish www.arlingtonarts.org

Free

Come to play, or just to listen! Once again Arlington honors old time music master Speedy Tolliver with his very own event, in this, his 91st year. The event has become a tradition in Arlington, a tribute to Speedy's lifelong achievements and dedication to traditional music. A respected presence at any American roots music gathering, Speedy Tolliver is known for his versatility, having mastered various fiddle and banjo styles including old time, bluegrass, Dixieland and swing. In Speedy's book, anyone who plays music - master or novice - is "all right"; so in the spirit of the man, the Fest isn't really a contest at all, but rather a noncompetition that invites fiddlers and banjo players to perform in celebration of their love of the music.

The annual Autumn Moon Children's Festival (Tê't Trung Thu) is an opportunity for everyone to learn about and celebrate the Vietnamese culture and heritage. The Festival is thousands of years old and is celebrated in many Far East Asian countries that once used the lunar calendar like Vietnam, China and Korea. The summer harvest was over by September (August in the lunar calendar) of each year. While harvesting, the adults were busy and left their children to play on their own. Once the harvest had been completed the adults celebrated by offering thanks to the gods for providing them a good harvest. The festival also made up for the lost time with their children, held under the full moon which falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar, and was first held during the Han Dynasty under the emperor Wu Di around 156-87 B.C.
