Basic Beading Learn basic fundamentals of beaded jewelry design using bead crimps, beading wire, leather cord, coil ends, head and eye pins, jump and split rings, basic loops, wrapped loops and use of a bead board to make necklaces, a bracelet and earrings. Woodworking Shelf Clock: Beginners Learn how to use power and hand tools in a safe manner while making a clock (approx. 13‖h x8‖w x 4‖d) out of oak or other available woods with a quartz pendulum movement. Here’s a great class to get hands-on beginner instruction on the woodworking equipment at the Thomas Jefferson Art Studios! All-Purpose Card Table Intermediate to advanced students with a foundation in beginning woodworking will machine and assemble a folding circular card table using rough sawn lumber. A familiarity with using a table saw, jointer, planer and stationary sander is required. The project will also require students to make hand-made mortise and tenon joints and machine-made dovetail joints. This class will also cover the application of veneer to a curved surface. Handbuilding (beginners to advanced)

This class is for those that don’t like throwing on the wheel but love handbuilding with clay. Instruction in sculptural and functional techniques: pinch, coil and slab construction. Surface decoration and glazing will also be covered. Individual guidance will be given for all levels. Experienced students can pursue independent projects with guidance. Throwing on the Wheel Discover the joy of creating functional clay vessels such as mugs, bowls and vases. Beginners are introduced to basic wheel techniques such as wedging, centering and throwing. Surface decoration, glazing and trimming are skills covered as well. Repeat students are welcome. Students should bring a towel, notebook and $11 to purchase tools at the first session. The best of both worlds! This class is great for every level. Beginners will learn fundamentals and advanced students will refresh what they already know about how to throw on a potters wheel and techniques in handbuilt ceramics. Designed for individuals to work independently in a creative and safe environment who have previous experience and basic skills in equipment for Silversmithing (flex shaft, rolling mills, polishing machine, and acetylene torches), Casting (flasks, investment and hot wax injection) and hand tools. Students will learn how to create their own original dies to use with the Hydraulic Press in order to create a locket form. In this workshop various soldering techniques are reviewed and demonstrated. The importance of which temp solder to use when as well as the various types of solder joints used in jewelry making (butt, sweat and chip). This class is mostly a lecture and demo. *NEW* Finishing Finishing a piece of jewelry is essential to having it look ―done‖. This workshop covers what it takes to get your piece off your bench and onto YOU . Various surface techniques such as sanding, high polish, oxidation and various matte finishes will be covered. Students should bring works in process that need to have that last step addressed. *NEW* Casting: Series (beginning to advanced)

This class is broken down into a series of five separate step by step workshops each one teaching a specific lost wax casting technique and procedure. Thomas Jefferson Center. Inst: Dawn Benedetto

Wax Carving Students will learn the basic skill of carving out a basic ring band. Using dividers, saws and files to learn subtractive wax techniques and create designs that are more geometric and have hard edges will be the focus. During this class students WILL NOT be casting. *….. Wax Modeling Session two covers soft waxes and additive techniques. These materials give your piece a more organic and ―natural‖ feel. Spruing Understanding this transitional step is vital in the casting process. Students will learn about appropriate sprue size and placement and setting up wax models in a flask. Investing This workshop will be covering the process of investing models and the burnout cycle. A good refresher class for those who want to get back into casting. Casting Students will take that final step in the casting process. Centrifugal casting will be demonstrated. Multiple flasks will be cast, so each student should get a chance for some hands on experience using the equipment. This is a good refresher class for those who have casting experience. Students will cast their flasks from the week before. Silver is not included in workshop fee. All students will purchase silver from the instructor during class. Photography *NEW* Photo Crafts

Wondering what to do with all of those digital photos you have on your computer? This class is great for those interested in learning and experimenting with mixed-media techniques while creating unique mixed-media photo projects. Digital Photography: Beginning Take creative, well-exposed photographs. Master your in-camera meter. This is a hands-on class that uses a camera with manual aperture and shutter speed (digital SLR camera with manual settings). A point and shoot camera is not appropriate for this class. Learn basic camera techniques to explore all types of photography, whether you want to learn to take better photographs of friends, family or landscapes. Fairlington Center. PAINT—A—PLATE Come join us in this creative environment and transform a ceramic plate into a work of art! Cost is only $12 per plate and you can pick up your plate one week later! GIRL SCOUT WORKSHOPS Girl Scout workshops are a fantastic way for Brownies and Juniors to have fun while earning their badges. Space is limited, so register early!
