Renaissance Fair Extra-Credit Project Suggestions

Purpose: • The period of time in Western Civilization from about 1400 to 1650 A.D. is known as the RENAISSANCE. • During this time, starting in the northern cities of Italy and slowly spreading north and west across Europe, many new and exciting developments took place.

• In order to celebrate the many and varied achievements of the Renaissance, a Fair is being held at Southern Oaks Middle School on Monday, November 23, 2009

The students of the 6th Grade Talons’ Team are being asked to create different projects for demonstration for the entire school

• The students of Mr. Barrish’ Language Arts classes may do a project for ExtraCredit equivalent to that of a test grade. • All projects are voluntary! • Unless otherwise determined, no project will receive a grade less than 80. Other grades possible, based on the amount of visible effort, will be 90 or 100.

• Projects can only be: – Posters • (no smaller than 16 x 20 inches) and (no larger than a traditional science project board)

– Models • Made from simple materials.

Ideas for Posters 1. Posters can show the development of grammatical marks. –

Perhaps a big drawing of a mark of punctuation and a brief history written neatly underneath. •

Naturally, ideas must be researched.

1. Drawings of great Renaissance people along with a brief biography.

Ideas for Posters 3. Drawings of great Renaissance inventions, developments and creations. - Again, please include a brief biography or explanation.

4. Any other idea will be acceptable with prior approval of the teacher.

Ideas for Models • Models can include replicas of microscopes, telescopes, Renaissance toilets, weaponry, architecture, sculptures, artwork and other associated Renaissance inspired creations.

Ideas for Models • Remember, the Printing Press was invented during the Renaissance! – Either a model of the press or of the block letters used would be MOST welcome

Ideas for Models • Perhaps you could (under the supervision of mom or dad!!!!) carve some letters into wood.

Cautions and Warnings • Many devices were invented during the Renaissance which were violate in nature. • You may represent them (such as bullets, bombs, fireworks and swords) BUT under no circumstances will anything of a REAL nature be acceptable on our school campus. • Failure to comply will and shall result in appropriate punishments.

Due Date: • All projects must be properly identified with your name, teacher and period. • All projects must be in to school on Friday, November 20, 2009 and no later than 9:00 AM Monday, November 23, 2009 if necessary.

Be advised: • The school and teachers accept no responsibility for items lost, stolen, broken or mutilated. • Naturally, all appropriate steps will be taken to protect and return all items as much as is prudently possible.
